RULES:

You are only allowed to post if you KNOW FOR SURE how the professional player you are talking about aims.

Evidence is:

  • Personal conversation with the pro that you feel confident he/she wouldn't mind sharing if directly asked.
  • Interviews which can be found/linked to.
  • Instructional material where they state it.

Please do NOT post speculation. Please don't post that aiming systems are bunk. Please don't knock each other. Just let this thread live as a record of how the pros aim using the concrete evidence we can find.

I would also like to include Perfect Aim as a "method" since it's centered on aiming.

I will start.

Shane Van Boeing - stick aiming that he developed - according to a TAR interview and a video recorded lesson
Stevie Moore - ProOne - derived from Hal Houle's systems as taught by Stan Shuffett
Darren Appleton - Something similar to the S.E.E. systems that he currently endorses.

Rodney Morris - portions of the object ball - from a personal interview with him in 2003 - no idea about currently.

Jamie Ferrel - Perfect Aim as reported by Joey A.
Matt Krah - ProOne according to testimonials on Stan's website.
CJ Wiley - Something of his own invention according to a P&B Mag interview, link to follow soon.

San Jose Dick McMorran - pure feel based on his many statements on AZB on the topic.

Please keep the list going - if you know a pro and feel comfortable asking then ask. Let's just try to keep a list and see where it goes. If anything is in error please disagree and correct politely. :-)

After 4:00 starts description of the typical fraction system, Steve Davis used it.

On Oliver Ortmann's (World champion) first pool camp back in the 90's (I was there) Oliver described the ghost ball method and "variations" of it using the tip of the cue for adjustments, depends on individual's cue.

The great Robert Byrne describes that famous method as well in his Standard book.
Byrne is a great teacher and researcher of the game, one of the greatest of all times, pioneer in organizing instructional pool material coming from systematic study, interviews with top players etc.

Nickos Polychronopoulos, my good friend, world class 3 cushion player uses both ghost ball and the fraction method.

i watched the link and it seems its more a ghost ball system
he places the ghost ball then looks at the "fraction" of hit

I am very much an advocate of aiming systems ever since I spent time with Tom Simpson and Joe Tucker. The only issue is that most systems work real well for centre ball hits only, once we get away from the center things change as we all know. You can still use the systems with english but it requires a lot of additional learning and practice - I am getting there.

I use it all the time (not a professional but a SS).

Just my 2 cents!

wow JB I wish you would answer my email case inquiry as much as you talk on this forum.

I observed Rob Saez at derby city lining up low left on virtually every shot. I asked him about that and he replied "that's just what I've always done", no real reason for it.

Josh Brothers does the same thing, not sure exactly what he's doing.

Here's what 12 pros say about aiming: Aiming, The Secret of Pool? or Basic Instinct...
Notice most of them play by instinct or ghost ball variations. Earl Strickland even says, ""I've played so much that I don't have to think about it." <--- That's the way it should be! Practice aiming so you don't have to think about it during match play. Doesn't really matter which method you use during practise...so long as it works for YOU! If you think there is a "secret" method that will work for you without practise...you're wrong!
I like what Pro Nikki Benish said "...when you're a professional, every shot you see, you've seen and shot at least a hundred times before." THAT'S why we practise!

Our House Pro who went to Jerry Briesath's Pool School, is big on FRACTIONALIZATION. He misses a lot of shots!

Hi, are you Roger? If so my wife answered your email 3 days ago. Also if you are Roger I will answer the other part about the leathers you offer a little later.

Very sorry about my lateness with email. I am really terrible with email and I have just hired my brother to take over for me. I like to talk cases but honestly am a terrible person when it comes to follow-up.

Regarding the forum I am sadly addicted to it and to talking pool. Inside me is a pool player at heart and a lot of us aren't very responsible with half of our focus always on the pool table.

Only consolation I can offer is that the wait is ususally worth it. However with my brother coming on board and with my wife Karen handling orders the wait is going to get REALLY short for our cases. Removing me as the bottleneck is the best thing that can happen to our case business.

This way I can focus on the builds for anything where my design skills are needed, can focus on the innovations which is where my heart lies and focus on playing pool because I don't want to get punked next time I get into a grudge match with someone from the forum. :-)

Please send me your email again and I will answer it before I go to bed tonight.

John:

CJ Wiley uses 3 CB points aligned to 2 OB points (edge / center). He then comes into center ball from an offset position. Almost a reverse-CTE.

Ditto. Except the "virtually" part. It was every shot as seen from above.

Darren Appleton: SEE System by Ekkes.

Robb Saez, doesn't know how he aims and can't tell you. (He told me so and I believe him).

Dear John, sir,

You have committed a grievous error..As I admitted to your role model, (JoeyA) thousands of A.S.S. posts ago...I am now commited to a sure fire "Aiming System", and I am just thrilled with it...Don't know how I could have been so blind, for so long.

Thank you both so much for your perserverance. I have finally seen the light, and will now be an A.S.S.[sic] forever...Please, Let me share it with everyone again...

After a short tryout, I reverted back to my sure-fire PIITH system..(kept breaking my protractor)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_q4jEPmHFa8 <--Don't miss the surprise ending ! Thats what hooked me on it.. :)

SJDuck-A.S.S. (formerly ANTI-A.S.S.)

PS..Thanks again John and Joey, forever in your debt..:)
