How do we all help improve the image of pocket billiards?

The coolest kid friendly adaptation I have seen was at a pool hall in Brooklyn (I don't remember which one) where they had taken a bar table and "chopped" the legs off to make it more comfortable for kids.

Time to S**t or get off the pot

C J has created a great post here. Anyone who had any doubt about his selection as Mosconi team captain should realise what an inspirational choice he was.

But it is time to stick out his fork and get some real help from the US pool community.

I am helping C J on a project related to his Mosconi squad, It is a series of mini documentaries that give an insight to what lies behind the public image (such as it is)
of his players. It is hoped that this will trailed by Sky Sports leading up to the MC and give the US boys an edge in the upcoming propaganda war.

But it needs some financial help and there seems to be plenty of small traders and fans on here to weigh in with some financial support.

In effect you would be sponsoring the US Mosconi Cup team.
Unfortunately this will not give you advertising exposure during the event (that would have to be negotiated with Matchroom or Sky).

But by this association it would get you recognition with this community and elsewhere.

PM to CJ or myself if you are genuinely interested but no timewasters or freeloaders please. \Read the title again TTSOGOTP

Geometry and Math seem like a given and it's certainly a game involving physics

You want to improve the image of pocket billiards you have to get children involved in it and loving the game. Make the game more kid friendly. Have tables that can be lowered or elevated to the height of the player and make more kid friendly products. You know what they say you got to win the hearts and the minds. Have more family friendly venues but not have them turn into a amusement parks.

I've always wondered if you could do any educationally motivated pool games.

Geometry and Math seem like a given and it's certainly a game involving physics as well.

I have a feeling if a big company decided to design an educational pool game they could and if marketed effectively it would be a success. 'The Game is the Teacher'

I've tested the water the last year and heard all the negative "we can't do it because of blah, blah, blah" and I appreciate everyone's honest input.....Now I want to talk to You that believe IT CAN BE DONE and are more "solution oriented"....what deligence can we individually do to achieve our common goal: IMPROVING THE IMAGE AND POPULARITY OF POCKET BILLIARDS.....I believe it would benefit All of us in the Industry to join together for this common goal...Please be "solution oriented" What have you done or what would you be willing to do to help promote pool? I'm really not looking for ideas about what others could do....I want to know what YOU CAN DO or HAVE DONE in the past.

I am including a YouTube video of one of the positive public relations promotions done in the past Now that I'm back involved with Professional Pool full time I want to do More for the Game than before...much more..."THE GAME IS THE TEACHER" thanks in advance C J Wiley

The History of the game is the teacher...

Telling people the history of the game is something I enjoy. Its funny how many people play but dont know how the game has become the game it is.

RULES...RULES...RULES... The rules have got to get squared away. There is no other game that has 100 different sets of "standerd" rules. It dont matter if your playing full court ,half court, 3 on 3, 2 on 2 the ball needs to go through the hole for the basket to count. The word "slop" has done more harm to pool than all the other crap rolled into one.

When I get the time to play I make whoever Im playing with play by the rules I know make the game the most FAIR...

P.S. Holy crap, C J Wiley is on AzBilliards trying to do something good for pocket billiards. To put it in my own words, " That is ****ing killer ".

Oh one more thing. Earl should have been the Bobby Jones of pocket billiards in the USA but he pissed on that calling. Feel free to slap him in the back of the head for that move would ya. Id do it myself but Im to big, hes to small and I have to admit I still like the guy, a little.

I even played in the World EightBall Championships and it was SLOT RULES!!!

You have some valid points there. The game should always be "call shot" and the incoming player has an option to refuse the shot (just not on a safety).

I"m not sure who could argue that "call shot" shouldn't be played by the pros. I even played in the World EightBall Championships and it was SLOT RULES?!?!

I couldn't believe it, that amateurs play call every pocket, but the pros don't? What kind of "logic" is that? Common sense is sometimes so "uncommon".

I agree with this 10000%

There NEEDS TO BE a universal set of 8 ball and 9 ball rules.

None of this "bar room" rule BS that varies based on the bar location. Unless you're playing a particular game with it's own standardized rule set.

Rules rule.

There's A Kind Of Hush

The Posting has been up for 5 hours showing CJ and his pre tournament plans for The MC.
But there hasn't a single offer to help.

Did you consider that might be because of what you posted earlier? You ask for donations with nothing in return, IOW, free handouts, and then state that you don't want any freeloaders or timewasters. hmmm.....

All I am asking is that CJ's team (which I think is the best for years) is given a fighting chance to win and that all starts with pre match publicity.

Sure, if he had six moths then maybe there could be some kind of incentive package to go, But it is six weeks and if you are not motivated by the desire to support your country
then the whole thing is a waste of time.

Wasn't it one of your Big Guys who said something like: Ask what I can do for my country not what my country can do for me. Or something like that.

Just thought CJ could probably provide a copy of the documentary after the tournament to contributors.

Start a national youth program where kids can learn and play pool in facilities without a bar across the room. Without 'new blood,' it's days are numbered.

Their chances to win has nothing to do with hyping a event. This is just a typical marketing type of post.

Winning or losing is solely in their hands and their hands only.

I beg to differ. It is in their hands and it is also in their heads. These players are at a skill level where they could pot balls forever. But up there the game becomes 40% physical and 60% mental. Confidence can be added to that and then you have a force to be reckoned with.
I am not hyping the event as a marketing ploy. Why would I do that?

Cleanliness. Golf has negative aspects but you never see sloppy drunks (at least not during tournaments) and it is also outdoors and played on beautiful, perfectly maintained fairways and greens. Obviously pool is not an outdoor sport, but if more pool halls would devote themselves to providing a clean, well maintained environment it would go a long way toward sanitizing the general image of pool. Maintain the table. Don't let smokers cloud the place up or stand around the entry door required a trek through the blue cloud just to come in. Use brighter colors. Less hardcore gangsta rap and "life sucks" country. More fifties rock and other generally upbeat music. Bartenders with a decent dress code instead of whatever they pull out of the bin that morning. Better food, if it is served. Less fried, artery blocking heart attack starters.

Pool halls are an interesting amalgamation of different industries. Food, pool, event hosting, bar, It is a chimera business that has developed organically based on changing times. Dissect each aspect and see what works for the individual facet when it is all that someone does. Then reassemble them into a cohesive pool hall that can draw from multiple markets.

Mr Hoppe...Tap, tap, tap! This is really the only answer! Many of us have been trying for years to establish some kind of "national" youth program. I was fortunate to be part of it 20 years ago (along with Mark Wilson and Jerry Briesath). Unfortunately the BCA decided to discontinue the program, after only 3 years. It may happen still, and I am personally hopeful enough to want to be part of that effort, as are many other professional instructors I know. We all need to reach out to the kids in our local communities. It all begins with a spark of desire to make a change...

Well, since I don't know you, there can be a number of reason why. More future sales for a bigger piece of the pie maybe?

You contradict yourself. If they can pot balls forever, than they don't need no stinking cheering section now do they in order to pot balls forever.

To me, this is a meaningless event. To me, pool is not a team sport and those that keep trying to keep it that way just are doing more harm to what pool is really about.

But, that's just me.....maybe it was that one time while playing baseball where no matter how well I played, if the whole team didn't play to my same level of play, the games were lost. Or the time and so on.

It is the singleness of depending solely on yourself for the win or loss it is what playing pool is about. Not being part of a team. The only team concept I think is overall good for pool is leagues like the APA, BCA and so on.

I think the the allowed behavior by both the fans and players at this event does no good for the imagine of pool. Trying to implying that not showing support for this team and event as not supporting your county is just bullshit.

Pool should never be introduced to any youth program, this will be a horrible thing. BCA did the right thing. Pool is addictive individualistic game, i am afraid its effect is somewhat similar to drug addiction. Kids that become good at it will tend to forget about school and indulge into it, and the better they get the more desire for intense feelings, and drive them into gambling eventually, and in short time they drop out of school and loose their chance to recover.
One time someone asks Efren, would you want your kids to shoot pool, he said, no no no , they have to finish their education, and stay away from it. This is coming from the what used to be #1 and one that earned lots of money doing it.

One might say, what if kids that are involved in pool has to maintain higher grades A & B in their class, this is ok, but i bet you you will loose those kids because they will drop to C & D level in no time

Mr. Naji,

Tap! Tap! Tap!

Very insightful. No disrespect to anyone, including myself, as I too thought it would be a good thing, & it might be for the game.

You have put the good of the youth ahead of that of the good of the game.

My dad introduced me to the game when I was 13 years old at a bowling alley & we bought a Brunswick Sport King for the garage. I guess he did it the right way & kept me out of bowling alleys & pool halls until I finished school.

Again, 3 Taps Mr. Naji,

Agree with what others have said. Need to grow the sport by bringing in new and different players.

General youth programs.

Bring it into math and physics classes. It is a natural fit. The math, science and physics nerds will eat it up and most likely be able to out perform the sports jocks.

Make it more attractive to women and beginners.

Beginner leagues where the HC structure gives the edge to the beginner. For example HC balls instead of games.
