How do you hit and aim the cue ball to make this bank shot?

And that right there is the law talking when it comes to banking boys. Your question has now officially been answered.

This is the absolute truth. I told John about a 4 railer that I read wouldn't go unless the table was real wet. Without even describing the shot he set it up and knew exactly what I was talking about.

End of thread. If you can't make it work, practice some more!

Uptown got its hustlers
Bowery got its bums
And 42nd street got big John Brumback
He's a pool shootin' son of a gun
Ya, he's big and smart as a man can come
Shoots stronger than a country hoss
And when the bad folks all get together at night
You know they all call big John boss, just because, and they say

You don't tug on Superman's cape
You don't spit into the wind
You don't pull the mask off the old Lone Ranger
And on banks you don't even question John, da do da do...

Yep, bank question asked, bank question answered...

Just tried this on a quick-railed Diamond 7-foot....couldn't do it.
Tried it on a 9-foot Diamond...best was 3 rails in the other side.
(looks like a Diamond in the video BTW)

However, shot it on a Gold Crown One with after-market rails....
..they're 'gold crown 4' copy rails made in Taiwan...
The shot's a hanger!
I was very careful about duplicating the position on the video.

The old Robertsons out of Tampa would handle this shot also, I think...
..they were really quick-railed.

The old Brunswick super-speed cushions (pre-Anniverary) had a higher
contact point and handled this shot also.

..shot it like JB says....the left is not for the rail but more to miss the kiss

Correction,Yes on normal good playing rails, like a good Diamond you have to use a little left to make the ball come back.If you try It with right (on good normal rails) you won't come close to making this shot.John B.

Hey John, have fun this weekend in Myrtle Beach. Don't get too rowdy, I know Shannon will be there with you, lol.

I'm saving up and I'll come see you again in a few months.

I like the LAWMAN.

With a nickname like LAWMAN, the banditos will think twice about holding you up. :D

I would prefer the 'President'....of a player's organization.
John Brumback has the respect and credibility that Joe Kerr had.

..there's a lot of things wrong with the game these days....
...but everyone knows a good bank-player can straighten anything out:cool:

The way this guy has this shot set up,won't work on 99.9% of tables I've played on.This must be way down south on a table that was under very wet condtions and some funky gaff rails.I have seen a couple tables where this might work but the doors were all open and the table was wringing wet and It was pouring down rain outside. But If you have to or want to try to make this shot,I can tell ya how.....It's a center cueball hit with just a touch of left,It's more stun than left though. The shot's pretty simpl but not at the extreme angle with which this guy has It laying at.

Thank you John. I appreciate you taking the time to answer. Now I don't feel so bad about not being able to figure it out. :)

hey guys...

I finally went and tried this shot for myself just as it is setup on the video and it went in like it had eyeballs 3 out of the first 4 attempts.

I sincerely do not believe I have a gaff table.

It's a GC1 with Simonis 860 that is maybe three years old, and Brunswick Superspeed cushions, approx 4 years old. And I'm up north and have central ac.

Mostly stun with a drop of left (per Mr. Brumback), as full in the face as possible and the object ball goes maybe 3/4 of a diamond out from the cross side then back across into the original side pocket. Cue ball does come back close to straight across the table from where it struck the object ball.

Comments?

pt, this shot also worked easily for you on a CG1. Is it to do with the rubber profile?

Brian kc

WHAT!!?? Are you sure you had that much of an extreme angle? Are you sure your up north and not down south? Man I don't know.Good shot Is all I can say.I know for a fact on my Diamond that ball will not go.Not like that guy had It set up.Or any diamond I've ever played on.Well I guess you learn well and fast.lol Once again good shot! John B.

John;

I just edited my last post to underscore that pt had the same success on a GC1.

Was wondering if it might have something to do with the cushion profile or what else, I don't know. Mine has superspeeds, pt said his has aftermarket brunswick 4 knockoffs.

I did set it up with that exact same big angle and, like pt said, it was a hanger. lol

Nothing to do with my skill, it has to be something to do with the cushions.

I have a camera and if I can figure out how to do it, I'll post a video.

Well my bad and I'm sorry that I said this shot can't be made.I was wrong.
I just don't get to play on GCs or any table other than a Diamond.
So far there have been two people that have made this shot with ease.
So maybe It just doesn't work good on a diamond. I know It doesn't work on the old valley bar tables down the road.Well anyway,I gave a good opinion on how to try It. If anybody else makes It I would like to know what kind of table It was on.Thanks,John B.

I measured the contact height on the Diamond 7 and 9 fts and 3 GC's
including the copy rails.
The Diamond 7 ft has the lowest contact...the Diamond 9 ft is next
lowest...the 3 Gold Crowns all have higher rails.
I feel all the modern tables are a bit too low.
Frank Taberski's old Brunswick had even higher rails...corresponding to
an old book I had that said the contact height should be about 70%
of the ball's height.

Hmmm,That's some good info right there. And good shot by the way! Thanks and I'm sorry to you, that I was wrong and told you that It wouldn't go.And thanks for the good words back there.I appreciate them.

Hi John;

No apology, please.

You possess more practical knowledge on banking than anyone I could name.

The way you suggested to hit this, in order to even have a chance, is what worked.

What pt discovered regarding the contact point differences on GCs vs Diamonds may well account for why the GC allows this wide-angle double bank to go.

Whether or not this actually does play any role is way beyond my pay grade - but probably right up Bob Jewett's or Dr. Dave's alley.

Meanwhile, it's definitely nice to have your input.

You are an extremely talented and classy fellow; a real credit to our sport.

And yes, that was Jim Croce. ;)
