It's more visual than verbal. But Szamboti blanks have longer sharper points, and the veneers are more precise.

I would recommend going to the Hopkins show and looking at them. Put them side by side and you will see the difference.

By the color of the veneers and by the length of the points. The points on Gus Szamboti cues are longer than most Spain Blanks. Other than that it is all a matter of having many of them come through your hands.

Take care

one is 2500.00 the other is 25,000!

sorry, couldn't resist!

I know, I know... Here's where my mother would say " if you don't have something constructive to add...."

I was going to mention color as well, but I can't explain the difference. You just have to look at many of them.

veneers

they each stuck to specific tones of certain specific colors...

for example, the green on a spain will never be used by gus and so forth for the orange and several other key colors.

those who know, know...

those who don't call up those who do :)

for example

this is a gus:

Okay. Picture POP QUIZ:

What is this, SPAIN or GUS?

unknown-1.jpg

I'm guessing Spain (5 veneers, although this is an unusual blank).

Concerning the other issue (Spain versus Szamboti), on Balabushka's, Spain did not do birdseye forearms, as far as I know, but Gus did.

Hey Tate, check out this Spain (bottom cue) that was just listed here. Photo courtesy of Ssach

Spaid did do BEM forearms and it was pretty common throughout his career...use of BEM was very prominent toward the end. It's my understanding, though, that the ones he supplied to Balabushka were clean straight grained as ordered.

RE: Szam vs Spain points, the overall dimensions of the points are different, Spains are somewhat shorter and fatter, whereas Szams are longer. Also veneer work is usually much cleaner on Szam prongs.
