How do you treat the traveling road player?

Nowadays the locals tell the roadie EVERYTHING and knock everyone's action and they are here today and gone too quickly, bad mistake...you can learn allot from a player from another part of the country.

Well maybe if everyone at my local room didn't go about trying to steal from all the other players, being tight with the spot, and only betting when they have the stone cold nuts there wouldn't be this resentment deep down between, and then they wouldn't knock each other's action. I'm going to guess the "locals" your referring to are you average players who got robbed in bad games with the shortstops, and then your haters. Too much resentment, and greed going around these days.

It keeps them in stroke and gives the locals a chance to see them play without knocking. Whether they play their true speed is up to them.

$10 a game 9-Ball
$20 a game One Pocket

Usually, this breaks the ice and stirs up action.

I play them even, one set to five but I get 3:1 on the money. Their other option is $3 a game 10ball. THey usually leave after an hour either way...or offer a decent spot.

I am doing my best to call the shots as I am not at work. I have been busted before.

Sounds like you all should all at least try and 'pull together' when a roadie passes through.
Whats also nice about a broke roadie staying, you can then take him or her around and get their lost cash back and get a piece of the action, its a win/win.

The philosophy I have was formed years ago, back during the Grady Matthews/Charlie Shootman days. When a road player came too town we all tended to band together and try and bust him, steering him wrong and inflating the pockets of the local players. What ALSO happened, when they went broke they "STAYED" in town for quite some time, some even settled and never left. What was gained other than the cash was the knowlege/friendship that were created by this new 'road player' becoming a resident. Nowadays the locals tell the roadie EVERYTHING and knock everyone's action and they are here today and gone too quickly, bad mistake...you can learn allot from a player from another part of the country.

I used to like it when I could tell both the road player and the local to pull their hats down hard, they were in for a rodeo! Then sit back and watch the show.

I'm a lot like that.

$5 or 10 a game.
$25-50 sets.
$10-20 one pocket.

This gets things rolling. I come out firing, too. Sometimes, they get a surprise. If I can't take it off, it makes them play good enough to know how to match up. I make it to where they can't lay down and beat me. If they can, I'll pick up on it. If I can't pick up on it, I guess I'll just get beat. Won't be the first time. Won't be the last. But, my record is not so bad.

I am surprised by the responses that indicate that one person feels responsible to be sure the game is fair.This pool detective mentality may be of some service to your mom and dad but it is highly frowned on by the actual players,Many feel it to be a breach of ettiquitte,breaking the unwritten code.The idea of gambling on pool is ,to the old school player,leave everyone alone,its good for action,and if a fella can't take the heat then ,stay out of the kitchen.after all this is not day care.

One exception to this rule is to take advantage of your knowledge to work your way into the action on one side or the other,when the play is over and my side has won,and the local guy says why didn't you tell me,I always reply "I was betting on him" and everyone agrees it was a smart move. The goal tending mentality is strictly frowned on.This is when a guy who has no intention of making a score tries to wake the dead and make sure he doesn't make a score either,and for that matter that no one even gets to see a great game.

The only time I feel it fair to help the locals is when the road agent tries to borrow money,it seems to be the case today that players would just as soon borrow as win.This is a plague to avoid.

It used to be profitable to show road players good spots,and get a jelly or a piece of the action.I have always felt it is good to welcome the road agent and match up with him because he is under the fiscal pressure to play,and therfore may let that commercial necessity influence his judgement.

But to answer the question directlyI say welcome the road agent with open arms and your eyes wide open
