How good were Cole Dickson and Mark Tadd?

I know Mike well. He is one sharp cookie and he knew all the action spots around the Northwest. He took Cole around and they made some nice scores. I remember Cole telling me about beating Tacoma Whitey for 20K in the mid 70's, a huge score back then.

I met Mike the first time I went up there. I played him on one of those 8' bar boxes they have all over the Northwest. I liked them because it was more like playing on a big table. Mike was a pretty good shortstop and he gambled good. We came out about even and I didn't want any more of his action. We have remained friends all these years.

Man... You must have been playing good when you went through there if you played Mike even and came out even. Mike Z. pretty much had a stranglehold on tournaments in the Northwest for the few years I was there. He beat Dan Louie, Horsfall, and a few other top players in the area in the 9 foot 9 ball tournaments that were held while I was there. It looked like to me the only thing that stopped him from winning every 9 ball event in the Northwest was when he had a little whiskey whilst waiting in the hot seat.

Santos Sambajon did run through one event untouched, tho. He was just a bit too strong for us in the PNW at the time.

I had my moments. I was always a better gambler than a tournament player. I think I even played you once some fifty a game One Pocket and got lucky . Dan Louie was by far the best player in the Northwest for over two decades and he dominated the tournaments up there. Rich Geiler was second best. I actually beat Dan Louie the first time I played him, so there you go!

MAYbe $20.00 a rack, back when we still had the AZ room. I don't get to play enough to bet that high unless I'm pretty much stealing. And even then, I usually get asked to play. I just never was much of a gunslinger, but would step up if I'd been playing a bunch.

I did play Strong Arm John a single $50.00 game of barbox 8 ball at DCC, tho, lol. Funny thing about it was, I had $10.00 worth of tokens, and was in the action room trying to play a few games on the barbox just to get rid of the tokens. He was looking for action, and I asked him if I could use the table till he found some... He asked me to play for $100 first, and didn't have that much cash, but went ahead and played him for the $50.00 in my pocket.

He broke, made two balls, and was actually running out the balls well, and looked like he was gonna break and run.. He got squirrelly on the last two balls and ended up having to try to bank a ball.. He missed, I ran out. No offer of a second game was forthcoming, so I played out my tokens, and headed back to the room to check out.

I was actually hitting 'em pretty crisp this year at DCC.. Off and on. 1. I am much heavier than I was last year, and I felt that severely affected my game. I got a brutal draw...I think everyone I drew in the One Pocket/9 Ball was 750+ Fargorate... One was over 800.:grin::angry:

I am getting a professional bodyfat test done on Tuesday, and then it is back on a low carb diet + weightlifting. Depending on local results in the second half of the year after some weight loss, I may come back to Derby next year.

Hard to compare. They played on the old wool slow cloth with the fairy 'dead' balls compared to today.
Cole was a big angle player. Looked out of line, but was right where he wanted to be. Made everything he shot at. Had as much gamble as any player I ever met...on his money!
There was a table in Glen Burnie ( old Bill & Billies ) that had tight triple shimmed pockets. I think it was tbl #16. The cloth was soo slow you could move it with your hand.
I saw Efren throw out the balls for 9 ball , take a shot on the 1 and run 7 racks on that table ( the spot ball would not go in the side pocket! ). I saw Mark Tadd do the same thing while waiting for Geese to get a horse to play him 1 hole. Mark ONLY ran 6 racks!
Never heard or saw anyone come close to doing that!
The great players of the 60's and 70's playing the great players of today................
It would be a WAR!
I was 18 when I met Cole at the Golden Q in Hayward, about ‘66- He was only 15 and no DL, so often drove him over to SF to play at Cochrane’s all night long. Shorty, San Jose Dick and the usual suspects.

Any good photos of Cole Dickson?

That's the first good pic I've seen. If memory serves, he was introduced to me as Kenny Anderson. The hair looks right. I met the real Kenny Anderson a couple years later and it always nagged at me. Thanks. You killed that worm. Ronnie I met later as well. Can't forget that face. He had one of those black pharmaceuticals palmed and thoughtfully flashed it with that smile. :D
The other guy is Reed Pierce? He looks more like the guy they introduced as Kenny. Never be a road guy. Nope...

Like, would you say they would be able to play Archer, Strickland, or Reyes in their primes even in 9-ball and be able to come out winner in a long set? I don't know why these 2 intrigue me so much, but I'd love some tape of them if anyone has any.
How good, Tadd vs Cole. OP.
Cole was the better of the two.

Doesn't look like Reed to me.

1969. Nobody was better than Cole. Ask anyone who knew Cole's game in '69 or so and see what they say. Comparisons of Cole then with Earl in his prime are reasonable. The most that could be said at the time is that, if they consistently got the rolls, they might have won some money. I think most of the comparisons of Cole's game in this forum with anybody was from around 1990. By then Cole had been through a lot.

the super top players back then would still compete well with those around now. a small handful of the current players would be a smidgen better as they train more and have few bad habits. and certainly do better in long sets because of that stamina.

You probably watched that Luat vs Dickson one pocket match available from Accu-Stats or maybe YouTube.
Cole almost always knows exactly where he's placing the cue ball.
On the final shot of the match, I think Cole put the cue ball intentionally where he knew Luat might go for it. It was a world class difficult shot.
And if Luat missed, Cole figured he could get those last two and win the match.
You know the rest of the story.

I have been told by numerous reliable sources that there was a stretch of about 6 months when Mark Tadd was offering the 7 ball to the TOP pros. Apparently he got there sometimes against them. I guess he just got into this zone for a little while.

I looked into it because I *played* him in a couple of mini tourneys at the BCA this year.

KMRUNOUT
My memory might be going. Is this 7 ball spot a money ball? So if the person getting the spot makes the 7 ball or 9 ball at any time during the game they win? Because for a top player, this is not really a spot to be getting otherwise. If a top player can get to the 7, they can get to the 9. And if Tadd can get to the 7, he can get to the 9. Tadd must have had lots of action because having 2 money balls on the table and winner breaks is too good for any top player to turn down. There must have been something else, like Tadd wanted the breaks. Pro gets a good 7 and Tadd gets the breaks. Now that might have been a ballsy gamble for any pro against Tadd.

Thanks for clearing that up for me. Anyone else care to advise me then?
You're downplaying the spot.
You say if he can get to the 7 he can get to the 9. That is speculation.
The spot is the spot. It is what both sides will agree to play.
