how hard is it to change a pin?

i just got a cue made for me with an extra large butt, i ordered it 5/16 14 because i shoot with a schon and i was hoping to be able to use some of my shafts on this new cue, but the 5/16 14 pin on my new cue isnt the same 5/16 14 as my schon. How hard would it be to get a new pin put into the butt of this cue with the same 5/16 14 pin as my schon. Its a simple 4 point butt with a wood joint and it has a metal band around it, piloted. Is this a huge deal to get it changed or something pretty easy?

I'm assuming the pin in the other butt is not screwing down into the Schon shaft because Schon has been known to tap their inserts to fit a .010 undersized version of the 5/16-14 pin,this is NOT always the case,but tends to be. Either that,or your shafts screw down fine and the pilot on the Schon shaft is too wide to fit into the bored hole in the joint of the new butt. Either way,it would be a simple thing for a cuemaker to run a tap into the insert or turn down the tenon so it fits the new butt,but removing the pin,and putting one in that is undersized will cause a sloppy fit and probably be very difficult to get running true. It CAN be done,but there are pitfalls,and the expense involved might change your mind. Tommy D.

Run a 5/16/14 tao through the schon shaft. It will still work on the schon and it will work on the new cue as well. Some may think it would make a differance, but I have never seen where it does. Butterflycues

hey thanks mike, youve got to be one of the most helpful guys ive ever met on this board, thanks to everyone else who responded too. So what should i do........get my other schon shafts retapped or change the pin in this sneaky? If i get the other shafts retapped they will still work with my current schon pin too? I really dont want to do anything that will mess with my schon outfit (1 butt and 4, soon to be 5 shafts).......i just ordered this new cue because i wanted to try out a larger butt cue to see how i played with it (i have a finger that doesnt bend and i thought a larger butt would feel more natural). I wonder how much it would cost to get a pin changed out and done right?

In this case it is your new butt you bought to experiment with, not all of your matched up Schon components.

Thanks for the compliment, If it was me, I would change the pin on the new cue, Once you open the inserts they will have some slop to them while screwing, once tightened it's okay, I'm sure the only reason you are doing this is because you like the shafts on your Schon but want the thicker butt of your new cue.
Tough decision sometimes.
 
yeah i had this cue built cheap, like 130 bucks, simple sneaky with a metal collar, 60". Ok thanks guys thats what i was thinking, change the pin and leave the schon stuff as is. How busy are you mike? Im not in a hurry. I guess id want to get the shaft that came with it redone to fit too while im at it.

Send it and I'll replace the pin and insert. Or I'll send what you need and you can have a local guy do it if you wish.
 
id rather you do it mike.....ive never paid you to do anything and youve helped me out on other stuff and even sent me one of those free rubber covers once when i wanted to try a leather wrap on a cue. Always said to myself if i had a chance to get something done i definitely wanted to send my business your way, you just seem like the kind of guy I like to do business with, and you have a great rep for cue work anyway, ill get your address off ur website and send it. thanks
 
I shy away from these kinds of jobs, especially on a Q made so so cheaply. You have no idea what problems you are going to run into. If the joint size of the 2 Qs is not the same, the shafts from the other Q will not match up. Mike is right to change both the shaft bushing & joint screw, because they may not be perfectly centered. Changing the joint screw, even if the new one is centered, may not line up when screwed to the old shaft. This can be a diaster for new cuemakers or repairman. Know your limits & turn down jobs that are way beyond your experience or you could ruin someones cues. That will only cause you bad publicity & cost you the price of a new replacement cue for your customer...JER

Thank you glad to help, but please don't give me to much credit, when some asks about building cues, I clam up quick to stay loyal to my profession.
