How has 14.1 improved your overall pool game?

thanks man...thanks for the encouragement....but i really liked 14.1...although it's my first time playing it...it forces me to think more and be more accurate...i like to be pushed

you will get pushed or push yourself all the time, because when you run 20 every time you want 30 then 40 .....i started to play 14.1 when i started playing pool and i love it ever since. most of the time i play it alone, too but i never get bored as i always want to break my records and get better. For me, this will never stop. it is the best game in the world and a beauty to watch when played on the highest level.

just enjoy it, practive hard and you will see your improvement coming soon.

if i ever feel down...I would go to church 1st...den maybe my second place to go would be to talk to people in AZ....everyone's so encouraging and friendly! Just love it...

Yea...I will seek to improve...

new 14.1 players would benefit by concentrating on minimal cue movement. i call it "little position", other players call it, "surgery". when i run a rack this way, i feel accomplished. a well played rack will have all the balls shot in the two foot-rail pockets and maybe one or two in the side pockets. rarely should you have to use the head-rail pockets. if your cue is routinely traveling all over the table, rethink your strategy.

yea I try to make every ball in the bottom pockets and use those near the side pockets for positional purposes...

Yes, I think playing too much 9 ball has affected my 'surgery'. I used to be better at it when I was playing snooker 9-10 years ago. Have to find back that precision placing instead of area placing...

The things I feel I will benefit the most from 14.1 is my pre-shot routine, my positioning and my rhythm...I think I placed too fast in the past..

I also use to have the attitude that I should be able to run 50's a lot, but I have never broken 43. I guess I just thought someone who can do occasional 3 packs in the sissy games could get 50 at 14.1. But when you think about it, a 3 pack of 8 ball is only 24 balls, and at least 3 of those were uncalled lucky shots off the break :) So you really can't beat yourself up about not approaching 50. You don't need to be a 6-pack runner in 8 ball to reach 50 in straight, but you do need to play pretty sporty.

These guys who hit 50's and 70's and 100's on this forum play REALLY sporty and it might seem like there are a lot of them, but this forum is kind of the #1 spot for english-speaking pool nuts... so if only 20 guys here talk about running 100's, that's probably 20 out of many thousands of people.

I also read once that some actual pro level straight pool players only average about 8 balls in league. That sounds too low to believe but it includes every safe they ever played and every break and every time they had nothing to shoot at. Knowing that makes me feel better if I "only" get 20.

Good points. To add to that, consider that when running racks in 8 ball or 9 Ball, you have the advantage of the opening break that scatters things up pretty good. Yes, to continue a run in straight pool you are breaking the balls up on a break shot, but due to the fact the cue ball is not going at full speed into the rack directly (but off another ball and sometimes a rail), you are usually left with one or more clusters of several balls that have to be dealt with - every single rack.

I started playing a lot of 14.1 to improve my cluster break outs for my 8 ball and 9 ball then I found out that there are a million other reasons that 14.1 will improve your other games.

The table will never look the same to you once you become a regular 14.1 player.

Shortly after I started playing 14.1 regularly I ran 2 consecutive rack in 8 ball on my APA league night and was not ever aware that I had done so until a team mate came up and congratulated me. I was still thinking about how my position play was not as good as I would have liked it to be...he he.

In 14.1 you have to learn to do all the stuff mentioned by the others above and you also have to learn to calm your mind, maintain your focus, forgive your self for minor imperfections in your game and constantly re-assess the table lay out and reconsider the approach you planned to use getting out to that break ball.

Then just as your have it all figured out you accidently bump a ball out of position and you have to do the whole plan over again.

Well I do any ways! Probably doesn't happen that way so much for John Schmidt or Bill Marop or Oliver Ortmann, only us humans.:bash: and the lesser Gods....:bow-down:

Yeah...The breaking up of clusters and the movement of the CB will definitely improve through 14.1..and yes..I could run 3 racks of 9 ball but can't even reach 20s regularly for 14.1...I love this game...gives me a really good challenge and what's best..I can play on my own which is great

I really tip my hats off to those that can run above 50...It's just amazing consistency and concentration

I was always a 8 ball player, mainly due to thats about all that was played around me until I came to the forum and learned about 14.1. I am certainly not very competitive yet in 14.1 but it has helped me tremendously with my 8 ball game. Of course, 8ball bar box you run into clusters all the time and I am now more effective at getting into the clusters with a decent leave. It has also helped me with CB carom angles and my general position/pattern play. I' sure as I play more 14.1 I will pick up more skills but this is where I am right now.

played for 4 hours....but my highest run was 21...really disappointing...had a few chances but did not take it. Had A LOT of 15-19 runs....Hope to break 30 by my birthday (12th April)

For me it has helped with my ball-pocketing. When I play 9-ball or 10-ball I only see certain shots every so often. In straight pool you shoot ALOT of balls. It also really helps deal with clusters.

I agree with big E, i am noticing that I am shooting shots that I almost never shot in 9 or 10 ball.

argh! shot a 29 today...1 more ball lol and I missed on an easy ball (lost concentration)...

But I feel I getting the hang of it and making better patterns and running balls and breaking into the pack with consistency.

Thanks for all the advice guys

I have a hard time finding anyone to play 14.1 against also, such a shame that more people don't play it.

I've noticed that when I can spend a few hours a week just trying to run up a decent score my 8 ball game noticably improves for awhile. I don't miss as often, it's easier to slip the cue ball into some tough spots, my breakouts are cleaner and rarely hinder my efforts to get out. I've been told I play like a completely different player when I'm in post 14.1 mode and I rarely get into the 3rd rack.

tomorrow is my birthday and it's my last chance to break my high run of 29...hope i can do it....must really pray haah
