How long would it be ok to leave cue in car in hot humid weather?

I've mentioned this before, but my meucci sneaky pete has sat in the trunk of my car in Florida for the last 30 years.

Still straight.
dang, I went on vacation in Florida and after I got tired of the ocean I went back took a shower about 6 Pm and was going to go out, it was so hot I waited till 8 , still too hot waited till 10 , I went out at 10 was soaked by the time I got to my car , put my hand on the door handle and set my hand on fire, said f it and left the next morning.

My last trip to Florida was to put together an eighteen wheeler somebody had stolen. It was 108F in the shade and there wasn't any shade!

The Meucci is absolutely true.

Still there in the trunk.

Having said that, my Nitti doesn't stay in the car! 😁

I hate bringing my cues to work because that involves explaining to people.

I'm now using a leather JB case and someone was admiring it and I overheard them say it looks like a sniper case. So I'm worried people think they are rifles especially in today's climate.
I dont do it often, but never had an issue. Most people know me where i work, given my role and being very social. I just mention they are my cues, they know its my hobby, and no issue. Some might ask to see them since they know i like nice things.

I bought a cheap Uniloc butt and a CF Rhino shaft.
$250 car cue, plays great.
A lot has to do with how the cue was made. Did it take 5 months or 15 months? The cue makers I’ve used prescribe extensive drying times to veneers, rings and inlays. Turning a shaft would take weeks. They never rushed any steps and unsurprisingly, their workmanship stands the test of time. My Runde Schon was completed in early’85 and all 3 shafts are still straight and the assembled cue rolls completely flat on a pool table. The stitched rings and ivory inlays are like new. And I’ve left my case with 6 cues inside in my car back seat under a blanket on a summer day and nothing happened. But I don’t make this a practice and the way temperatures are getting hotter, car trunks can get over 130 degrees. Interior car temperatures can get over 125 degrees. Fresno had a streak of 100 degrees days that over a 3 week span averaged >105 degrees……with the way climate change is affecting temperatures, it seems frivolous to risk damaging your wooden cues leaving them in your car, especially the trunk.

I've had a cue live in a vehicle in Orlando summer, Illinois summer, and Louisiana summer. In a case and out of direct sunlight (for theft prevention as well). No issues. Cheap to mid-range McDermotts at the time.

It's just a risk and reward calculation, no one can say what any one person should do. In some cases it might just make financial sense. For instance, at my Lake Charles LA job site I wouldn't be able to take my cue into the site (too close to a weapon), however "risking" my cue by keeping in my truck meant not having to fight traffic in 45 minutes in both directions to go home and grab my cue after work...didn't damage my cue in the least and saved a bunch of time/fuel.

My moochie from the early eighties stayed straight as long as I had it. Gave it to a coworker in the nineties when he started playing. I have to admit the shaft was so limber it probably couldn't hold a warp if it ever got one.

About the only thing nice about that stick was the hinge so it was easy to tote. Took me six months to get to where I could make it shoot. People would roar with laughter when I slung that thing in a corner and grabbed something, anything, off the wall! After ten years playing off the wall the moochie was quite a change!

No

Did the car warp?

That's a valid question!

I grew up in Wisconsin. I used to think that the cold was tough on things like car batteries.

Until I got to Florida.

The heat is a lot worse. If you get 3 years on a battery down here it's newsworthy! 😑

if you are a gambler you never know when you might need one. so it pays to keep a simple straight cue in your car always.

many times ive been in a bar in the past and one of the people was a decent player and brought out his cue and the bar people all wanted to bet on the side. and the bar cues were not okay for playing against someone decent. so having a plain cue in the car doesnt change or chase away your action as he has one.

You don’t know how much I want to casually have a cue in my car at all times. It would mean cheap case because the trunk is the case and I can go to the pool hall without thinking about going home to get them.

I hate bringing my cues with me even if I’m not going to shoot pool right away. I bring them just in case I stop by after running errands.

just do it with a cheaper cue that hits fine for you. which is most any cue that you sand down to the shaft taper you like and practice with it for a time and you will be fine shooting it. maybe use it as your regular cue.

a cue shouldnt be a crutch for your pool game to be good. if it is its mental, and you are never going to be decent.

FYI… the question How Long…. Does everyone realize How Long was a football player.

I keep thinking about this backwards. I don't go anywhere that I can't bring my cue in and either park or babysit it.

Where are y'all going into that you are reluctant to bring your cues?

I would never, ever, leave my cue for 2hours in 100deg temps.

I suppose if I had a $100 cue it wouldn't matter much.
I don't own anything like that.

I take care of my cues, like I take care of my dog.
good for you. i'm so happy for both you cues and your dog. only cues with bad wood or poorly aged wood when built would warp after a couple hrs in a hot car. only cues that i ever had warp on me were a Schmelke sp(really shitty shaft wood) and iirc some chinese import or an ADAM. No good cue ever moved a millimeter.

If you gotta make a few stops you're gonna carry your cue around with you?? Must look a tad goofy in WalMart/Target. ;)
