I was wondering just how many out there have cnc machines for inlay
and what types they have.
 
Just trying to put some kind of number on how many have cnc
we have a few ideas in the works to make cnc life easyer.

Sell canned programs/g-codes?
For " custom cuemakers"?
I hope not.

I have cnc that is not finished.
Mach2 controller, no cam software for now ( write codes manually ) and Xylotex control box.
Around 42" X , 12 Y riding on THK rails.

I have a 4-axis Gantry type system that I built myself using top of the line surplus 7/8" ball screws, linear bearings, 1,000 in/ounce motors and spindle that I got off of e-bay over a 2 year period. I built my own power pack and controller driver system using a 75 volt transformer, 2 very large capacitors and Compumotor drivers. The body was built using aluminum I got at an exotic metal scrap yard and adapted the machine to the length of the ball screws which are nearly impossible to cut. My cutting dimensions are about X-32, Y-32 Z-12. I use AHHA software to control the machine.

I also have a small Sherline CNC Mini Mill which is practically useless and I have another good professional 16 X 16 2-axis gantry that came out of a factory that needs set up and 2 more axis added but I haven't found time to set it up. I don't want to sell it but at the same time I have no use for it at present.

I see no need for CNC lathes in a non production shop so I have never converted any of mine to CNC. I am in the process of building another saw shaft machine that will cut up to 4 shafts or butts at once that will be CNC however.

Not got my machine yet.
But here's a picture.
Plan to place a lathe and a 4th axis under the Gantry.

HSD 2KW spindle
0-20000mm/min working speed
traveling pos.accuracy +-0.03/300mm
reposition position accuracy +- 0.05mm.
Uses gear wheel transmission and shaft lienar bearings.
1300x1200x200 X,Y,Z working area.
520Kg

Receive it in one month.

more machine then you would ever need
now just my opinion no ones needs to get mad
but the align rite set up properly is as acutrate as
anything at any price!!!! spindle also has a lot to do with
accuracy the best machine out there is only as good as your spindle
columbo, elte, presice , just to name a few
we just did some chain lick ring work 15k thick links

custom built with Gecko Drives. 4 axis. running with Mach3. codes and drawings with Mastercam9.
 
the align-rites are good,but seem to have issues with the tailstock staying set.seems to be a few .000" of movement back and forth.

I have a techno and a Blud. Just my opinion, but a wood lathe is a wood lathe is a wood lathe. As long as you don't move the tailstock it's ok.
 
they just use the wood lathe for a base and cast iron makes the best and heavyest base everything else is heavey duty also and also turn key i had mine un carted and set up and running in 3 hours and its never missed a beat since.

They probably are nice machine for the type of work that we do but they aren't very heavy duty. Unless they have changed they don't use ball screws but plastic anti-backlash nuts that aren't real strong. I know Mad Bob called me once trying to locate new threaded rod and the backlash nuts as he crashed the machine at the end of a run and needed new rod and anti-backlash nuts. I don't think that's not going to happen with metal ball screw assemblies.

All of these type of machines are popular because of what you just said, "they are turn-key right out of the box". If you can figure some stuff out on your own then there are much better deals out there to be found in cyberspace. Really great machines that can be converted are the older Bridgeport tape controlled mills. They are no longer in use and when one is found can usually be found very cheaply and are mechanically, all set up for CNC. Just strip the electronics and convert to PC software.

Yeah, I just don't see why the Align Rite is worth 15K.
Sure it's plug and play and it comes with different cuemaking programs.
But, the K2 39 by 25 has a ton of other use and is built better imo.
