Let's see what's happening to the cue making world. How many of you are going out? How many are just starting to make cues?

Hi,

Thats a good question but how would cue makers know what is going on with other people. Most things like that are rumor and innuendo unless you hear of a retirement and that usually come from the horses mouth because they stop taking list orders.

The cue material suppliers would have more of a feel for a market polling question like that.

I've been building for 25 yrs and I'm just getting started.

I love your attitude KJ. It is obvious that you love cue making and when your business is something you love, you never work a day in your life!!!!!!!!

There is no money in cuemaking.

I think Ernie would disagree with you as well as many others CMs.

You can achieve anything you set your mind to if your see it in your mind and believe it 100%.

It is never wrong to reach for the highest apple on the tree.

If you really believe there is no money in cue making, there is no doubt it will be a self fulfilling prophesy. Reality in the world is completely influenced by expectations created on a mental plane.

And there's money in acting?
Tell all aspiring actors that and see where it goes.

The guys selling cuemaking dvd's make more money selling equipment
and supplies. One quit making cues years ago.
Tell them they should stop selling supplies and equipment and aspire
to be Ernie .

Let me see you quit your day job to make cues full time.

Thats exactly what you have to do. You cant play it safe as You can't serve two masters either.

If you quit your day job and go down a singular career path you will be motivated in a sobering way. You must pay your dues to get success. Every Actor who got and Acadamy Award and big movie contracts had at one point in their life made the leap of faith in their belief in their own talent. Dont get me wrong, most fail because they quit at some point in time.

Those who never quit and stay positive put them self in the position to succeed, not low expectation. You don't have to be a genius to see that.

If you don't quite your day job, cues are your hobby or your working towards quiting your day job in your future planning. Nothing wrong with that because you can earn extra money and the timing of making a move like thst is all about timing.

Rick

Btw, I love Ron's work but there is only one Ernie.

Did you sell your pool room ?

Mr. Tucker and Mr. Haley are serving two masters then.
One master pays for the other one.

Following your take, I'm gonna advice the Kidd to buy
a Techno Isel Cnc and at least two Sharp 13 by 40 lathes.
Quit his day job now too.

There's a lot more money in numerous other things but I chose the art of cuemaking, and like many other art forms some will reach the pinnacle but most will not. Success has a lot more to it than positive atittude but it is a good starting point.

You cannot confuse commercial success with the joy of creation unless the children happen to be hungry :) Sometimes success is putting a finished shaft on the lathe without tailstock help and watching it spin unsupported.

Most of the top 10% cuemakers have 30 to 40 + years making cues or are retiring. These days 30 seconds after starting to make cues new people are( producing or buying) 6 point short splices with four veneers or long splices. :) Oh well most of us don't have forty years left to live so our aim is just to make the best cue we can.

I definitely quit my day job WAY too soon (early 80's). It was a scary, difficult struggle... and, looking back, I wouldn't have had it any other way.

Levy - "I want you to rob my apartment."

Melendez - "Why?"

Levy - "Some guys are after me. I got a gun in my desk. And get me some clothes."

Melendez - "What's in it for me? "

Levy - "I got a TV set. I got a hi-fi... You can take it all. Do it."

Melendez- "What's the catch? "

Levy - "The catch is it's dangerous. Please do it."

Melendez - "That ain't the catch, man... that's the fun."

I personally think anyone who doesn't understand the above exchange from William Goldman's "Marathon Man" will never have what it takes to successfully make cuemaking a full time career.

I think first you have to categorize the makers, how many are part time and get there real money some where else, and how many do it full time and that is there only form of income. And in the category of full time how much of there income is repair and how much is building cues. My guess is the number of makers who build full time and make the majority of their money building, and do NOT have a sugar mama supporting them is very few. The recent trend towards ready built equipment and the growing number of part time builders is making it very difficult to make a living. Simple supply and demand.

Great post....too many folks these days have excuses why something cant be done or had....Some still have the balls to step up and make it happen.

I didn't expect this philosophical response

I didn't expect this philosophical response just wanted to hear who was getting out and who was getting in to cue making.

I just do this for fun. So I could be coming and going, and not knowing it. Hope this helps.
