How many of you sit down while working on lathe?

I guess it does matter what kind of lathe! Mine is a small repair lathe, sit or stand. "BIG" lathe, you stand.

A big enough lathe will have a seat on the carriage so you can ride along .... Hi Murray  Otherwise I stand (at my metal lathe).

Another reason to stand might be so you can use the foot brake (something you see on larger metal lathes).

2 lathes, sit at one and stand at the other. I probably sit about 75%. I have some lower back issues and I can work alot longer while sitting. I only do repairs. Hope this helps.

I sit down while working on my deluxe, and stand on the metal lathe.
Not sure why, maybe one is higher than the other?? I'm also more afraid and respect the metal lathe more than the deluxe by Hightower. Another good reason to buy a Deluxe

Gary, I always sit, when i chuck my head. Won't fit in the hightower though. Getting a nicely rounded head now too. 132.45 mm oh, maybe that's another body part???lol

thanks for a nice thread and good response! Recently I was thinking about a high chair to give a little relief to my feet and back, but having read the warnings I think I'd better not. My lathe is just a Cue Companion modified, but I would not exchange concentration and safety for comfort (and possible trouble).

Good judgement

Sounds like a good idea.

I don't stay in one place long enough to sit. The last few months I have been complaining about my feet hurting. My wife bought me a nice industrial type bar stool on rollers. I was wet sanding a cue the other day. Decided it would be nice to sit. I Droped the sand paper. Reached down from the chair to pick it up. The stool rolled out from under my butt.I fell flat on the floor. My feet felt fine for the next few hours. Till my butt stopped hurting!

That's funny!!!

I have lowered my cue lathes and tapering machine to table top height, with two bad knees, and a bad hip I have to sit when I can. The metal lathes are at stand up height.

I'm sure that Dick doesn't do lap dances while you're waiting for your cue.

Ewww, just gave myself another nasty visual. Thats twice today now.

I have a high padded bar stool that I can use while at the general purpose bench. Other than that, the only time I may sit is when I do a wrap.

But then, Terry's little toes have a hard time reaching the wrap pedal on the floor. My butt is half on the seat and half standing.

I prefer to stand at the lathe. I have padded standing mats in front of the benches. Serves a dual purpose. It does make it more comfy to stand and just in case you happen to drop what you are holding. It hits the thick rubber and not the cement.

But if you drop something small, it goes ping off the rubber and it can end up anywhere in the small shop.

The seat is for a customer mostly. I move it over to the other bench and tell them to have a seat. That way, I know where they are and they aren't rummaging thru my tool box or hanging over my shoulder.

Seriously, had one guy that felt the need to go snooping thru the tool box while I was working. It is a nice wooden machinist chest on rollers so I guess it looked interesting enuff to look thru. I got a little edgy when he found the tip drawer tho.

I hate having my tip box out of my direct line of sight.
There's lots of $ that fits into a hand there!!
