How much weight do you give?

I don't ask for weight, or give it out! I started a strange habit of stepping up and playing a long time ago. I will offer weight like the last 2 to someone who I'm even with just to get a mental edge on em. I think getting weight puts you in a weak state of mind before you hit ball one!

If I need the world to play someone, I just shouldn't be playing them in the first place IMO

I couldn't agree more. I started playing seriously back in the late 60's, it wasn't like it is now where everybody is a damned champeeen! LOL, I took my lumps and was better off for it. You start accepting weight IMO and you end up lazy. You start giving weight and you end up with an excuse to loose.

To get better, you need to bear down and grind out a win. How are you going to ever feel good about a win (even if its only one single game) if you are getting a spot? If you win you don't win. Bad thing taking weight, maybe even worse than giving it.

Flip side of the argument is that if you want to get better, don't just play a better player but put them in a position in which they will have to play well, by their standards, to beat you. The easiest eway to accomplish this is by getting a spot. A strong player rarely plays full speed against a weak player unless they are giving a spot. Put them in a position in which they must play well to win and you'll see their whole arsenal and learn twice as much!

Up my way, there isn't always someone to play that is a good match. So I give weight on a regular basis, so I don't get lazy. It's interesting that many don't seem to think this will help your game. I find it very challenging, if it's not; it's not enough weight.

impossible...

think about it...
If everyone would only play with someone better than them... no one could ever play anyone...

It really depends who I am playing, as to what the game is. I have played guys who give me the 5 out. I have been given 6 games going to 10. At the same time I have given out the 6 ball. However, if I am giving weight, I prefer giving games. It's hard to judge what speed you or others play until the two of you match up.
My skill level:
Its not hard for me to put 2-3 racks together. I have run 5 before, but lack consistency.

i recently gave an apa 5 the 5out on the bar table racing to 20 and beat him 20 to 11. Broke and ran the last 3 racks on him

The point is you win money from the weaker players and gamble it with the better players.

About a month ago I played 8-ball race to 10, I gave up 7 games on the wire + I needed to bank minimum one ball each rack.

I won 10 - 8 and 10 - 8. Then we played 9-ball, race to 11, and 8 games on the wire. I still needed to bank 1 ball in each rack. At 10 - 8 to me I missed a bank on the 8 and he got a game, I took the next and won 11 - 9. (I had 4 B&R in that match, with bankshots, so played pretty good)

Won 150 $ :) Biggest handicap I have offered anyone.

I'm no hot shakes, but i'm playing with a friend who's new to the sport but improving rapidly... we race to 5 and he gets 2 games to start. Money tends to even out at the end of every night more often than not and that's the point of this particular arrangement. Though he's starting to improve faster than I am, so I'm thinking we're going to change it to a race to 7 with 2 games weight. (Playing 8 ball fwiw)
