How often do pros switch cues?

The pros and the money players...the folks who play this game for a living. How often do they (or you, if the question applies) change their playing setup? (playing cue, break cue, shaft, tip, chalk, etc.)

At the risk of starting another thread about whether equipment can improve your game or not, I've been wondering this for a while. There's a lot of discussion on these boards about equipment, and different combinations of shafts, tips, chalk, etc. that people are trying with what I presume to be varrying degrees of success, and I'm just curioius whether this is something the pros do too or not.

Most pros change their cues when a cuemaker gives them one to play with. Other than that pros don't buy many cues when they get a name. Johnnyt
 
Depends on many factors. Sponsorships, personal taste, and how they are running. :D

You could make a list of guys who switch cues like changing socks and a list of guys who stay with a certain cue for years. It's all over the board. Usually I find that even the guys that switch cues often stick with a certain type of cue, such as steel jointed or big pin, wrapless, 59" ...whatever. Except for Parica. That dude has a different cue every time I see him and the only thing they have in common is some variation of a leather tip on the end.

Got to agree with you on that one JCIN. I have seen Parica at tournaments off and on for 25 years and I have never seen him with the same cue twice!
 
Bet most would if the sponsorship/endorsement deal was sweet enough.

I guess it's pool's version of a shoe deal. I want me a vintage 1970's "Air Efren."

JO=Jerry Olivier?

If that's the case (and I've always wanted to say this...) I've played with that cue. I also figured out that he used that cue in the Accu-Stats video I have of him playing one pocket with the cue. That was kind of a cool star-struck moment for me when I realized that I was watching a pool legend play with a cue that I'd used for a rack or two.

Anyway. That's my little geek out session for the day.
 
Kim Davenport played with a Gus Szamboti for over 20 years.

There is no formula for when a pro is gonna change equipment, endorsemant deals will change the cue they use real fast, but those deals are few and far between nowdays. The shaft deals are more common.

unless its a business decision to get a free cue to sell or something they are no different than anyone else the business end of it effects what tehy will play with more often than anything, unless they have a gambling problem and sell their cue :grin: :wink:
