How often do you play with a house cue?

I stopped in at a pool hall the other night and I was without my playing cue - (Meucci with OB-1 low deflection shaft). I had a heck of a lot of fun matching up using a stick off the wall.

I found that I could shoot pretty darn well with it! I hadn't used one since I've bought my own cue, which I've mistakenly come to believe helps me a lot. It turns out that I must have developed a half decent stroke along the way...

I was really glad that I knew the basics behind back-hand-english, because the house cue sure didn't play at all like my front-hand-english habit would want it to.

Anyway, how often do you guys end up playing with a house cue? Do you enjoy it? If not, I highly recomend it once in a while.

For me, at least once a week, plus I play on a 4x8 table that isn't bad, but isn't great either. There is crud on the table, slow cloth, and at one end where the slates butt up, there what I call a ski jumb, because the slate edges are not even. But I still win games....using the house cue and the iffy table.

I think it comes down to having the basics down to a point where the cue or the table don't really matter. Its been good for me to go between the 41/2 x 9 GC 11 primo table I'm used to lesser tables. After using a house cue, my cue feels really sweet.

If the balls are rattling the pockets but won't fall with my cue I often grab a house cue that I can't get too "cute" with to straighten out my stroke. I often go to one when I need to win before I am familiar with a new shaft too. It is pretty easy to find an "honest" house stick.

When I gambled a house cue was the only thing to shoot with. I usually had a tiny piece of sandpaper in my wallet or hip pocket and a tip scuffer in the watch pocket of my jeans. Putting the tip scuffer on your key chain was almost as big a sign that you were a hustler as walking in with a stick with a hinge in it.

Those old house sticks worked just fine and I won and sold or gave away a lot of jointed cues in those days. I didn't have any real use for one. My hinged cue never left the house.

I play with a house cue every time I shoot :eek: . Before heading to the bar/poolhall, I get my favorite "player" out of the house rack, break it down (along with my break cue), put it in the case and go :rolleyes:.

On a more serious note, I rarely shoot with one because I almost always take one of my house cues with me (usually one of my least expensive ones like a Players or Rage) with me whenever I go out if I think I might end up shooting pool before the night is over.

I am amazed at how many SL5's, 6's, and an occasional 7 I see shooting with "house" cues (and no, they aren't sneakies) in my 8 and 9-ball leagues (and doing very well with them I might add).

I recently purchased a "house" cue to keep at my place, I just feel that the feeling of a one peice stick is always familiar. When I feel my self starting to get out of stroke I will often switch to a house cue and when I go back to my predator it feels SO good! ;)
 
Right now, always ;) , at least until I get another cue....previously, only when a social event came up where I hadn't planned on playing....

I like the change, it's something different, and a little practice proves that it's not the equipment :) Somebody already mentioned, you have to shoot a little different, and that's not a bad thing....recently playing with all house cues, I've had to slow down my shots, while using more roll and less english....it's been a good experience, and I REALLY miss my old/better playing cues so I hope to appreciate the new cue more....
 
Sometimes when I'm warming up for a tournament, I'll use a house cue to break with. That's about it.
 
Like the original poster, I occasionally shoot with a house cue, such as when I am playing in a casual, social setting. Since I normally play with OB-1 shafts, I'm quite fond of shooting with lots of English. When I use a house cue, it deflects a ton, so I have to adjust significantly. I actually enjoy it on rare occasion just for the variety and challenge of adjusting to a different cue, temporarily.
 
NEVER! Unless I should have no choice, which hasn't happened in recent memory. Might happen if I was out of town and found a place I'd never heard of. But, I doubt it.
 
the only thing i use a house cue for is to put a moosehead on, i hate the feel of wrapless cues
 
ahh the good ol Wall-a-buska...yes I use it as well when my playing cue is unavailable, which means only when I am completely disorganized and cannot put my cue and the pool room at the same place, at the same time.
 
If I'm shooting around with my friends who are non-players, then I wouldn't bring my cue. But I can't say I enjoy it! (the cue, that is)
 
I am just as comfortable with a house cue as my own cues and when the game of the moment is not that serious, I won't bother bringing my cues or opening my case. I like what one member said about using a house cue to square of his stroke/eye. I do the same thing. You don't want to get fancy with a house cue, but when you are in stroke with one, you look like a champ because many people think good players can't play well with a house cue.

And to scuff a house cue tip, you can use the side of a dime if you don't want to look like a player. :P

id be fine with a house cue just that everywhere i go most of the house cues are warped, and have cue condoms...plus i like to play with IPT chalk...most places i know of have masters green witch i hate
 
I use a house cue like once every 3 months. This usually happens when I force myself to not shoot pool and just leave my cues at home instead of taking them with me to work... AND then during the day I will get a invitation to shoot pool later that night so I'm out of luck.

House cues are not bad; since they are one piece cues they play(depending on the tip) similar to my Huebler :)
 
I don't like the feel of a house cue against my bridge hand and I really mean that. I will play with a house cue only if I'm going out with friends who are not pool players and pool playing is just a small part of the evening’s agenda.
 
House cues...

I like seeing what's in this thread. When I moved to New Jersey, I had no idea about places to play. Which places, bars, clubs, had pool tables. Just got out of the habit of taking my cue with me. When I found out the establishment I chose to go to had a table, I would just try to find a house cue that had a tip on it that would hold chalk. Didn't matter if the cue was straight or not, as long as the tip would hold chalk, it was fine. There is no other feeling like walking in to a place for the first time, grabbing a house cue and running the table against unknown opponents. It also is a lot safer than going in to unknown territory with a very valuable piece of wood that might never be able to be replaced if some cretin decides they deserve it more than you do. Still fun to run out with a house cue!
