American pool has been on the decline.

America has been on the decline.

Causes for both : Radical egalitarianism and radical individualism.

Pool: previously the best player wins. These handicapped tournaments, leagues, equipment adjustments that keep trying to "level" the playing field are hurting our players development. Granted the Euro rise is due to many actually playing the sport solely as opposed to snooker players taking a bash at pool without any knowledge.

However, the participation trophy, everyone's a winner, liberal mentality has crept into the pool world and been a catalyst for the demise. The rise in nationalism and dissatisfaction, cynicism and outright rejection of traditional left political parties (as well as business and banking elites), many of which have been in power in Western Europe in one way or another since the end of the World War Two are starting to crumble (see Brexit, Austria, Denmark, France, Germany, Greece latest election polls.

USA after WW2 was capitalist in nature and a leader in economy, education and medicine. Now it is a complete gong show. Parallels to pool?

Trigger warning for all the left wing whiners. This may trigger emotions of fury, the urge to actually think logically and do some historical fact checking.

social programs are about keeping people at a minimum-level so they don't come and kick down your door.

free medical care is about keeping tabs on the poor and preventing a pandemic and keeping junior healthy when goes-off to the big city for college
and takes the subway.

it actually sounds like socialism is the pool answer you're looking for.

This would be an interesting argument (100% wrong, but at least fun to argue about) were it not for the fact that the opponent is EUROPE, full of countries with socialized medicine, socialized education, higher taxes than the US, more liberal polities, right-wing parties that have the ideology of the American Democratic Party and left-wing parties that are more extreme than Bernie Sanders, and so on...

lol, this might be the worst thread I've seen on these forums, and that says a lot.

I have to quote this again because I've never seen a post so thoroughly lay waste to the premise of an entire thread before.

Yep, that's what killed the Roman Empire as well. They started awarding participation trophies to both the lions AND the christians.

And in general a higher standard of living than the U.S.

Really, Greece, Turkey, Romania, Hungary, Czech Republic, Portugal, Croatia,Latvia, Bulgaria, Poland, etc. etc. etc. has a higher standard of living then the US. As I recall, folks are fighting to come here. I've yet to meet one single person who is leaving the US for Europe, not one. I know hundreds from Europe, including both of my in-laws.

That being said, I LOVE Berlin and plan to retire there within the next decade. And I"m not bashing Europe in the least, just don't think it's factual that there is a "higher" standard of living there, then here.

Do "some" countries in Europe have a higher standard, yep, but you can't put them all in the same group, they are not all equal and do not all function the same.

So, yes, Sweden, Germany and Switzerland have a higher standard of living, but it's not by much. The other countries in the EU rank a LOT lower. Heck, there are only a total of 4 European countries ranked higher, the 4th being Lichtenstein, but with a population of 36,000 I don't really think that qualifies as a country ;)

The US is ranked 8th in the world. Not too shabby. But the countries doing the best certainly are not the most "diverse". The US is dealing with cultures from every possible country on the planet and still making it work somehow

It has nothing to do with liberalism. The handicapping system makes more money for the room-owners. That's all there is to it.

Weak players won't play if the field is level and the same 2-3 guys win every event. -- That means less alcohol sold, less table-time, less food and less customers.

I refuse to play in any handicapped events because I agree that the best have paid their dues and deserve to win. --- I am also honored to pay $20-$30 to play the best in town and win-or-lose... I'm going to get a lot for my money. ---- But.... this is not how most players see it.

I've been a proud supplier of "big-cat" facepalms (or facepaws if you insist) on this forum for many years, but I very rarely bring out the lion. Congratulations, your post earned it.

That's what I said in another thread. Seeing the American team standing there with some kind of silver medals around their necks watching the Euro's celebrating said it all.

What kind of a two team competition would hand out silver medals?

I'll tell you what kind. The pussified kind.
