Any tips for going to a distant city and finding somebody to shoot with other than joining an organized league? Such as Nashville, TN. If you show up at a small bar with your own cue and look for a game, some badass could think you are a hustler from the getgo and bad vibes could abound. I don't know, I'm just wondering, as I have spent plenty of time in dive bars lol and even I have been accused of being a hustler and I'm no expert, just better than Billy Badass and I got on a roll. Seriously, I would like to play with some decent players for pool and the social aspect.

If you meant "IN Nashville where you want to go," I have no idea, not from there but will spend quite a bit of time there. I have spent a lot of time there in the past but didn't shoot pool, know my way around pretty well. But the question could pertain to any city, curious about the general question, as well... how to get a casual game.

Curious, are you inferring that the gamblers will be anxious to play a sucker? I really am not looking to gamble but I don't have any problem gambling smaller amounts in a fair match. But if they're local and I'm not, it probably wouldn't be fair!
I have no idea how much gambling goes on.
JOB's is a good spot. One MAJOR caveat: if you don't smoke you might want to bring a gas-mask. Seriously, at times you literally can't see across the room. Cool room with a lot of history.
I regret to report that it's out then. Now a senior, I am very sensitive to smoke these days. I haven't even thought of that. Are there any non-smoking pool halls anywhere?

Best way to get a game is to just ask.

I'll be in Louisville in two weeks and may have a free day. I'd play some cheap sets with someone, if available they can pm me.
Amityville? Maybe one barbox left at the Cuddy Cabin. I worked there around 25 yrs ago. Could be the same cast of characters, or their kids, it's that kind of town.

When you go to a different place, post on here "I will be in so and so for this long, with a car/no car/large bird I can hang on to" and likely someone will be familiar with a palace and may meet you. I for one enjoy meeting new players and showing them around my local rooms. Met up with a nice guy from Germany this way that was visiting near me and we played a few times while he was here.
As far as just paying random people, especially in bars, just put up your quarters and don't be shy chatting and bullshitting with the people, if you see someone decent playing along at a real pool hall ask if they want to play for a bit. A lot won't even want to gamble. Heck, I've seen a group of 3 players in a place that was new to me and I asked if they would like to play some doubles with me as a 4th, got a nice game for a hour or two.

There are lots of facebook action groups which you don't even need to be a member of.
I was stuck in Evansville for quite a bit and towards the end of my stay I wanted to play. Hit up 10 people on FB messenger and one replied they were in Owensboro and would play. We agreed on some one pocket and off I was to the pool hall.
The only time I get leery is the "I'll call someone to come play you" people. Even then, when you are playing someone and the best in town just happens to come in 30 mins later, is the only downside to being from out of town.
Some people just want a game and some fun.

Most any area you go too, there is one or two rooms the players go too. Do a check out visit and go from there. Watch, listen and interact.
