How to get old linen off

I have an old Huebler that I just got in to change out the linen. This stuff must be really old and I can't get it to unwind - it just falls apart. But it must be covered in glue all over too. It is like when scraping it, it just comes off in dust. I have done well over a hundred of these and never had trouble getting the linen off. I am having to scrape it off with a blade but this is going to take a LONG time. I only have a couple inches off and I have been working on it for over 20 min.
Anyone have any tricks on something like this?

Try soaking it down with 'Goo-Gone'.
That should eventually break-down the glue and the wrap should just wipe off.
Goo-Gone is a citrus based glue solvent and shouldn't hurt the cue/finish.
I use it for glue clean-up sometimes after a leather wrap.

Thanks for the info.
I will pick some up today!

Appreciate it.

Dang

I would just cut it from end to end with a blade and peel it off

I wish it was that easy.
I got some Goo Gone and wetted it and let it set for a few. It still just falls apart in little tiny fraying pieces. Check this out:

If this pic doesn't show, I will try again ;-)
That small little piece on my finger is about the largest the would pull off.

Thanks!

Not a cue maker here...but I had a thought.....

Why not chuck that in a lathe to scrape it off? Would seem to go faster if it's really falling apart that much.

Is is on a lathe...
It doesn't scrape off.

Lighter fluid and a lighter. :D

Spin with 80 grit then razor blade carefully.
Let it come to the blade, don't gouge.

Yep

Sorry. I just assumed. Couldn't imagine it being that hard in a lathe. Sounds like you really have a pain in the backside there.

It sure is...
Now after letting it set for a while, it looks like it is getting a little easier ;-)
Guess I'll let it set some more (gotta go to league) and check it again tonight.
Joey - good tip... that will be next if this doesn't work!

Thanks!

I hate to argue, but Goo-Gone is actually nearly 100% petroleum distillates with some citrus scent. I'm no cue maker, but I'd be a little careful with it for future gluing.

Removing Irish Linen

To remove Irish Linen, I just put the cue in the lathe loosely between centers (not so loose that the cue falls out but loose enough that you can easily spin the cue by hand).

I take a razor knife and cut a small amount of linen near the end of the wrap so that I can start unraveling the linen by hand. When I have enough off so that I can get a good grip I simple unspin it overhand until the entire linen has been removed.

Next I tighten up the tail stock to make the cue solid between centers, turn on the lathe and then I dress the slot smooth with a good file being very careful near the shoulders so as to not mar the finish of the cue.

This operation takes about 5 minutes and you are ready to rewrap the cue.

Good Cuemaking,

I have a similar problem but this time it with a lizard wrap. It's a pain trying to scrap off the glue residue and lizard skin that still are stuck to the handle. Any good idea? I would have chuck up the cue and sand but don't really want to take the handle down any smaller.

Thanks,
Duc.

cold

I have had this happen. When you try to sand it off, sometimes it just gets gooey and won't come off and even gets worse. A trick I use is to spray it with cold spray....freeze it!!! then it seems to scrape of a lot easier...make sure you work fast before the freeze is gone. I am sure this is where someone will say I t will warp the cue....I have never had it warp one....
