How to get position on the 9

if i was going to actually get shapes for a shot on the 9 in one of the upper corners (and not play for a bank or a safety), id probably shoot moderately hard with inside english, the object being for the ball to make it all the way back over to the opposite rail where the english will take and send the ball back up table towards the opposite corner. Other option for actual shapes would be to shoot kind of easy with extreme low outside english, hoping to miss the side pocket and get back up table for the 9 in the other corner. Both are low percentage shots in my book. Id probably do something along the lines of a safety on the 8 and leave it to my opponent to give me something more to work with.

How about that rail-first shot with inside english and spin up table off the second cushion?

Your not going to get good position on that 9. You'll have to settle for a longer cut near the 3rd diamond or play safe.

The answer is you don't

You play safe by hitting the eight to the bottom rail with right english trying to put the CB right on the nine off of the long rail.

By getting better position on the 8.
Personally I would like to be straight in on the 8.

I think you end up selling out. To get the CB back up by the nine means you have to hit the eight fuller than you really want to, leaving it by the lower left corner.

I think I'd try hitting the eight nearly straight on, hard enough to send it four rails up by the nine. Use high inside to try to get the CB on the bottom rail.

)END

If I was going to go for the shot, I'd jack up quite a bit with low outside. With my cue's deflection, I would have to aim to hit the eight full (or worse), and hope the swerve cancels it out. Tricky to get past the side, but I think it's doable.

The way the balls are in the diagram, I don't think that's possible. Can you make a diagram of what you are talking about?

He describes this, leaving CB@ A. I think CB goes to B, at best:

But, what realy happens there it that the8 catches the top of the pocket and sells you out.

yes you can

It takes some practice and a solid stroke, but here's how,
cut the 8 in, use just left english, you will send the cue to the bottom rail and then the side and then up towards the 9

)END

I know it looks weird, but I saw this shot in BlackJack's book. I practiced it with a passion and now I can hit frequently. I also saw Mikka hit this same shot in a tourney.

I think I'd try to thin the 8 on the right, or hopefully hitting 1/8 of the 8 ball, shooting the cue ball with extreme right english with just enough speed on the cue ball to send the 8 ball to the short rail in the middle of the table, while the cue ball spins down table, hopefully near the 9. This shot needs to be practiced or you can easily sell out. Also, in actual play, you'll need to take stock of the speed of the cloth and rails, because that extreme english shot will squirt the cue ball and swerve it also, and cloth speed will affect the effectiveness of the shot.

This shot is very doable with a lot of practice. Miss it though and you very likely will have sold out.

This one's easy.
  • First, you bemoan your luck.
  • Then, you point to the spot where you should have left the cueball.
  • Then you return to the previous shot, and site down the angle you attempted.
  • Stare at the 8-ball.
  • Shake your head once to the right and left.
  • Look to the crowd or any yes man.
  • Do the "palm up" why-does-this-$hit-happen-to-me submission gesture.
  • Shake your head a few times, not just once.

Then quickly get down and slow bank the 8-ball running the cueball up table to the 9-ball or thin the 8-ball and take that tough cut on the 9-ball. Shake your head if you miss. Point decisevely to the pocket if you get to and make that 9-ball. Fist pump is necessary.

Hope that helped.

A great player once told me that if you're faced with a tough safety where you might sell out or a tough shot where you might sell out, take the tough shot since it gives you the opportunity to continue your turn and win the game. Plus, it feels better (only slightly) missing a shot and selling out than trying to play a difficult safety and selling out because you knew you "went for it."

 That's insane. You'd never do that BB.

I think what most people are saying is that if you're going to pocket the 8 and try to get shape on the 9, you have to hit the ball perfect. Whether you use inside english and try to get to the bottom rail or outside english and avoid the side, you have to hit it perfect. Although your position on the eight sucks, this happens quite often in a match, and usually during pressure packed times so this is a very important shot to practice. I had a similar shot in the Planet Pool tournament over the weekend while I was trailing 5-2 to Matt Clatterbuck in a race to 9. I knew I needed to make the shot and get shape to stay in the match. I hit the shot nearly perfect, but the pocket didn't take it. In this case I had to come back behind the side so I used extreme outside english. I got shape and the ball just hung in the pocket.

Check it out...

On these shots you're really throwing the object ball with the english which allows you to hit it much fatter and that is how the cue ball can come back farther than you would have originally thought. Matt went on to win the match 9-3 after this game.

I tried these shots as the various replies suggested, but without much consistency. This is the way I would play it. Bank the 8 in the corner and draw the cue ball back. On a tight table the 8 ball hung up in the pocket on the first try, but I made it on the second try.

The 8 ball was set up one chalk width from the cushion and the cue ball was set up one ball width from the cushion.
