i didnt get the pictures of it,
but yesterday up at airway,
a friend of a friend shows me his really nice andy gilbert,
where the finish on the buttsleeve appears to be "melted"
almost like it was stuck in an open flame
just the buttsleeve bubbled boiled fried sizzled cooked
his cheap break cue was the same way

he said a few weeks ago, both cues were fine
im looking, studying the problem,
asking the obvious questions like where have cues been stored and so forth

i open the side pouch on his case and there's a pint bottle of 90% alcohol and a rag for cleaning his shafts
the bottle was leaking, the rag was wet,
the leather on the inside of the pouch looked like it was deformed too

soooooooooooo,
moral of the story,
PLEASE DONT DO THAT

Even catalyzed finish can be softened/melted with the right type of exposure and a closed cue case is a beauty.

Ouch!!! I hate when I do that to myself!! :banghead:

I carry no liquids in my case whatsoever! I went and bought myself a canvas tool bag, and in it is my cue maintenance kit consisting of denatured alcohol, guitar polish, fine grit sandpaper, spare QWhiz, leather for burnishing, Magic Eraser pads, a shoehorn tip shaper, and lots of microfiber cloths. Basically, everything I need take care of my cue for minor things like dingers or just dirty shafts...to polishing.

I guess keeping a bottle of Bourbon in my case is a no no. I will switch it out for a bottle of "Hanks" magic water.

What sort of case was it? Was it a soft case?

I can't see the alcohol getting through the plastic tubes we use. But this is another good one to go on my collection of stories about crap that can happen to your cue in a case.

I wonder if it was a foam core? I am going to guess without having tried it that a solvent strong enough to dissolve the finish might be strong enough to get through the hard foam used to make the foam core interiors.

So, hard case, 90% alcohol, leaking bottle, wet rag......dissolved case material and dissolved finish on the cue..... so it must have gone through the wall of the case.

Naturally you know that this sort of story is exactly the kind that interests me. Now I can test it and put it out there on video if our case protects against solvents. If not then I defer to the fallback of not carrying such strong stuff in your case :-)

yeah, the case just reaked(splck?) of the alcohol smell
it's IN IT
i told him he should scrap the case or else it could happen again

Whoa Brent........Great job on the pics of my cue and setting that up for me buddy.........Oh yea.....And thanks for the beer Saturday! LOL

That was my buddy that Brent is talking about and the case does have tubes in it.

Do you know the brand of case? I am interested to know what kind of tubes are in it? The reason I ask is because some cases hasverr thick walled plumbing tubes and others use thin walled clear plastic poster tubes.

I suspect that the lightweight clear plastic ones would be more susceptible to being eaten through by solvent.
