How will Efren React ?

Efren and Busta are managed by Butch Puyat I believe. One of the most influential men in Asia. Almost certainly an acquaintance, if not friend of Dr. Ho.

So how all that could possibly unravel I don't know, but it could make for a good book.

Maybe they will make a movie??

Who would play Bernie??

Efren would probably shrug it off. Any of us who have been on the road though know that a lot of the gambling and backing money comes from the seamier side of life. A lot of those folks make their money in such a way as to risk their freedom and their life quite often. If any of them are "owed" money by the IPT through their indirect backing of players I wouldn't be surprised to see some incident come out this.

I am hoping it doesn't come to that. People get pretty testy about money though, especially when it's a lot of money.

This ceased being funny about a week after Reno when the reports came in about the disappearance of the guaranteed prize fund.

It did cease to be funny to many.

The slap in the face or G F Y was the explanation about the excrowed money. "Escrow can mean a lot of things"! That is when I would cease to be calm.

I do not know this for sure, but I have been told that Efren was paid by either Puyat or the government over there.

That means that the $500,000 is now owed to them.

How about the other Puyat players - if you heard?

I have only heard this from one person, but it was a good source. I have only heard that Efren was paid.

Prize money is awarded by the goverment to any Filipino who wins an international event.

EDIT: I mean bonus. Olympic event has the biggest payout. I think Taiwan has something the same for pool players.

Now THAT is an incredibly strong proposition. It certainly takes some of the risk out of participating, and would encourage a strong farm team system, which that country clearly has.

That is my understanding too but NOT the FULL prize money offered by the tournament sponsor. My understanding is that IN ADDITION to the official prize money, the government pays an additional sum...sort of as a bonus.

So, when people have said the Efren "has been paid by the government" that is probably correct but I doubt very seriously that the government paid him the FULL IPT amount. Why would they?

But I HOPE THEY DID! Because while Efren might not sue the government of the Phillipines would CERTAINLY WILL!

I have put on many events with the top filipinos participating. They draw the most robust fan support, bordering on fanatical. They are heros to their countrymen, much like the way Hispanics worship their great boxers.

I can remember the "hoods" who brought Efren to this country initially. I wouldn't want them after me. 500K is not chopped liver, it is a FORTUNE in the Philipines.

Some people do not take to kindly to thieves. And KT is just that. He will get what he deserves some day. He has been fortunate so far. His good luck could run out, and it doesn't matter how any of us feel morally. He is treading on thin ice, when he stiffs the entire pool community. Maybe Mike forgot to tell him about this.

Pool players and their backers are notorious for "collecting" on bad debts. KT may not find it so easy to walk away from this one. It's not like he stiffed another sucker for $79.95. I have no sympathy for him whatsoever. To me, he is morally corrupt and completely asocial, with no conscience at all.

This may spell the end of his illustrious career as a swindler. I hope so.

Do you have any stories about promotors being made to pony-up after initially stiffing everyone? I thought they always got away with it.

Maybe with the internet and word getting around and many more people getting pissed off now than just the participants things will be different. As always, time will tell.

I'll give very long odds that KT and/or Deno will not be attending the WPC in Manila if payment has not been made.

I think it would be a very wise choice for KT and Deno not to show their faces at the WPC.

I could tell you about the James Gaston Memorial tournament in Birmingham in the 70's. I think Mataya won. The promoter tried to pay off either 50% or maybe it was only 33%. Preacher Red (Low Down Dirty Red) was owed something like $1,200 and colected in full at gunpoint.

Or when Mackey refused to pay the players in the PBT Championship. Danny Medina went to his room and collected in full. Big Mac almost had a heart attack. Danny was out for blood. This doesn't make Danny a bad guy in my book. He just didn't chose to roll over.

I was at that tournament I think Steve Cook won or came in second. His bad ass stake horse from Tampa went into some office or back room or something with the guy and came out with their money and left. He didn't care who the guy did or didn't pay as long as they got theirs.

They have not always gotten away with it and I predict they won't in this case if the worst case scenerio materializes.

Mackey got away with a lot, but, not all.

My biggest fear with Mackey was that the big SOB would fall on me.

Yes, it's a bonus. It has nothing to do with the prize money. Efren got the check, but I think it's on hold or something.

I imagine that, in the event he does not get paid, he says something along the lines of:

"I got unlucky."
