During pools boom, when there was Buddy,Varner,Segal,Rempe,Reid, etc, how would
they do against Europe today in MC. Maybe they are better than our players
of yesteryear. I hate to think so but maybe they are and the players we send today
are better than these guys.

Even if they were greater than or equal to, which I don't think they were, they wouldn't know what to do with guys who hit-back that hard, especially foreigners.

American pool players are mostly rhythm players in 9 ball.
Hard to get going in a race to 5.
The euros are more shot makers from english 8 ball and snooker .
None of the euro team can play SVB race to 100 or 10 ahead.

The players from that era were far more action tough.
I doubt if they ever had a day they couldn't play for something.

Being action tough makes you feel like a fox in a chicken coop sometimes.

A voice of reason in a time of buttermilk minds.

Well said!

That's way we need Josh and Thorpe on the team next year along with Sky and Berg. These guy travel and take on all comers.

Different era.

Hard to say.

I do think they were generally better payers. But the game was different...and the equipment was different.

.

I think the term "action tough" would better describe the backers.

This reminds me of street fighters trying to tangle in the world of MMA.

I suppose it's a moot point, since being "action tough" probably includes knowing when to call in the dump.

If those guys stepped-out of a time machine and into that arena last week, they wouldn't have known what hit them.

Easy to answer. They would have lost. When World Team Billiards was around, and the same type of "every game is huge" format was in play, and teamwork was crucial, our beloved Hallof Famers didn't make it out of the North American flight, losing to Team Puerto Rico (which may not have had all Puerto Ricans on their team) won.

When the dream match up of Team USA vs Team Philippines was done, Parica, Efren, Busty, Luat, and maybe Andam smashed our team.

That group would have beat the Europeans back when they were in there prime against the best from over there at that time.

The Europeans at the time, including Souquet, sucked compared to the Americans. Souquet was clearly one of the better Euro players, playing out of Germany., but his play was still sub-par against the Americans. The worst were easily the players with a snooker background.

But the Europeans got better. IMO, I don't think that American group would beat today's European contingency in today's format.

The difference in the 80's or 90's vs today, for the Americans, is that we could have assembled 5 Shane level players then. Today, we only have one Shane level player.

These 5 guys below overlapped enough that they could have been a team for maybe a decade. They are all right at Shane's speed. Today, no way you can assemble a list of current players like this.

Buddy
Earl
Sigel
Varner
Archer

I agree

I agree, I can't imagine how this bunch could lose. I lot of these knockers never saw
these guys play in their prime but still know that they would have no chance. I
think it's okay for the Euros to knock our guys but when all of the people that are
U. S. citizens start doing it, it just looks stupid. Just like the guy that roots for a
team to beat his home town team, " look at me I'm for the other guys, hey look at me"
When the U.S. was winning did a bunch of Euros start calling their team a bunch of
dogs and telling them what the need to do .And another thing, is there a Euro pool
or snuuuuker forum ? If there is, why don't all of Euro, and USA knockers go there.

Riddle

Here's a little riddle for you....

What do Ben Hogan, Wilt Chamberlin, Bobby Orr, Mickey Mantle, Y.A. Tittle, and "Fireball" Roberts all have in common ???

Think about it,......

First time I've heard that

Well, the year Nick Economopoulos surprised a stunned SVB at MC, Shane went on over to Athens and played him for some coin on his home table...10 Ball race to 50...and drilled him. Absolutely the finest 10 ball ever recorded on tape.

Format counts for a lot. If it was winner break in MC, our dream team of yesteryear would skunk the European team of today; alternate break, we might have a dog fight, definitely would have been a stronger showing.

Your above group would do just fine, in ANY situation.

Be like saying, how would the above group do....

If these guys were in their prime. Lassiter, Worst, Crane, Balsis, Mosconi, Knoxville Bear, Ed Kelly. You could toss in some cornbread red, marino and Toby and there still would be a shakedown. Have Fats book all the matches and it would be like the Kentucky Derby.
