playing 8-ball, this was my shot
from the break, I knew I had to get behind it, as both corner pockets nearest the 8 were blocked
I was pleased to execute to this point, but still had to finish the run
the side pockets on the table shown are generous, but the angle was still a bit blind
a few different options ran through my mind, I settled on one, and was rewarded for my efforts

how would you hit it tho? and why?

Weird photo angle there pard. I assume you're shooting the eight, right? Overhead shot would be easier to see the angle but to me its a bank or cut in the side. Based only on this pic i'd shoot it the side.

Side or bank cross corner.

From reading your post ,you obviously need to practice shooting balls in the side.

I'd hit it fatter than my ex wife and dog my brains out. Because that's what I do.

If that yellow ball isn't an obstruction to the opposite middle pocket, I'd be attempting a double. If it is obstructing, however, I'd just roll the 8 into the middle facing us.

Unless you feel that the scratch into the bottom corner is an issue, I'd cut the eight into the side.

Side pocket is an easy shot.
I would shoot that all day for the cash.
I find extreme cuts into the side pocket rather easy growing up in the era of straight pool dominance.
That shot comes up a lot playing straight pool.

I just had a flash of EG shooting it off the one. Please tell me I'm wrong.

hey, why limit ourselves to the obvious ^_^

I apparently goofed in my description tho. the side pocket wasn't the question. there's no bank, etc. it's the pocket you see.
my question meant to be how would you play the cue ball- top, center, bottom, side, tip of this or that, what speed, etc.

sorry about that, but thanks anyway. try again?

ya impossible to tell if the bank/side is on, so in the side it goes

Side shots like that are one of my specialties.

 like I said, the side pocket is generously-sized, but you still gotta make it!
I'm definitely not good enough to take that shot for granted
I ended up hitting it with a hair of inside, medium speed and it went right in (this time..)

No need to add complications - comfortable medium speed, center with rolling follow. I think of that as the default hit, only to be changed as needed - there's no need here.

thanks pat. I always start with center, but on shots this, I feel strange hitting dead center- it's like the cb is too "loose" when it contacts the ob, or something.
so I often add just a little bit of left or right, but it's pretty much center. good ball.

Yeah I'd roll it. At that speed you get more vertical gearing lock/skid/cling/lions tigers and bears but on well maintained equipment the effect would be negligible. If there are no positional or defensive requirements, you can do whatever helps you cinch the shot. On this shot, with left/inside, you can pretty much point the cue at the contact point on the object ball.
