How Would You Play This? 11/24/09

This shot came up for me in the Ocean State this past weekend. Game is 9-ball. I was curious to see if anyone here comes up with what I executed and/or possibly a better idea:

Probably play the 6 in the right corner, cue will come back to the 7. If I miss, the 6 should come back to the end rail, possibly hooked by the 8.

Looks like a 'safe' option to me.

What did you do ???

I would probably be shooting this safety - hitting just hard enough for the 6 to get downtable in case I get a bad kiss on the 9.

Aim through the six ball at the thick part of the 9, find the closest part of the six ball to the 9, and then aim at that point with the middle of the CB and hit a medium follow shot.

Six ball banks down table, 9 ball stops the CB behind the 8. Be mindful of controlling the speed of the 6 to keep it at least a foot off the end rail.

I use a "driving carom" system out of Byrne's Standard Guid to pool and Billiards for this shot. I was just demonstrating this method to another player last week, for dropping in behind balls about 6 inches off the rail from a distance, and was getting a lot of freezes.

You can be EXTREMELY precise on this type of safeties if you practice Byrne's system. If you wanted to be super aggressive on this shot, you could attempt (with good speed control) to just get to the rail with the CB and fall in behind the edge of the 9.

I like my shot better

Thus far, nobody has posted what I did. I'm not sure that's a good thing or a bad thing!

Well, if you were feeling lucky you could shoot this safety I guess, but don't blame me if the nine gets close to the corner and gets kicked in next.

(actually if I'm agressive I might try to cut the 6 in past the 9 in the upper corner - it looks like it will go and shape on the 7 wouldn't be difficult if it does, and if it doesn't go, it probably wouldn't leave a shot).

Did you try to follow and freeze to the 9? Seems very touchy from this angle.

I don't really see any other high percentage offensive or defensive option.

But then again...I AM a C player... :-)

I was considering this, but it seems wildly aggressive, and if you don't get behind either the 7 or 8, you opponent most likely gets a free shot to win, where with the safety, he's really gotta come with a spectacular kick, or get lucky.

I can't tell if the six goes past the 9, if it does I'm cutting it in. If it doesn't I'd of played the six into the 9, cue ball down table. Missing the 9, leaving it hanging in the pocket and then my opponent kicks the six into the 9 and I rack.

more I look at it I might just bank the six in, looks like it could get by the 8, I rack.

I don't know. If i was pissed off enough, i might just combo the 6 into the 9, hoping that if i missed, that the 6 would stay behind the 8 and i would pull the cueball back up table for a potential safe behind the 8 , with the cue ball ending up on the middle of the end rail for distance if i didn't hook my opponent.

But that's just me, i have been known to go for crackhead shots like that before.

Both your shot and Russ' are not possible in the actual game or in the diagram I created. In order to send the 6ball to your desired location, you would be hitting the ball full like below:

their shots are very possible. you have to cross the 6 with high inside english to cut it towards the middle diamond on the other end rail. the inside should also slide the cue ball into the 9.

I don't have a table here to test it. It looked to me like inside english would throw the six over.

Their shots do not include throwing the 6ball massively with left spin and avoiding a possible double-kiss. Their diagrams suggest the cueball path is natural.

Does the 6 have a pocket past the 9? If its makeable you could hit that shot with inside to straighten it out and go up and down for a shot on the 7. Very difficult shot of course, but its hard to tell from your diagram just how steep the angle is.

Maybe play the combo on the 9 and take the cueball two rails up to the upper right hand corner area?

Jude,

As long as it's not pretty much a double kiss by following through the 6 ball, the aim point can be adjusted to get the 8 in between the 6, no matter where the 6 banks to.

In your diagram, the 6 is far enough from the rail to slightly adjust the follow carom amongst a few different paths. With your adjustment, it looks by hitting slightly thinner on the 6, the CB still ends up in the same place, whereas the 6 goes to mid table.

For some reasons, i don't see a lot of people shoot this shot any more. I see this shot come up quite often amongst the Filipinos, tho. It tends to be at a longer distance, but it is basically the same shot.

That almost looks like a perfect half ball hit shot to carom the 9 ball and play the 6 ball relatively safe.

Also you could cross the 6 ball and bank it up table freezing the cue ball on the 9 ball, hiding behind the 8 ball.

Some of these shots you have to see them on the table to be sure what you would do. I might cut the 6 ball if I can see the edge.
