How would you play this?

The guy plays the ace ball too slow, it dies in front of the pocket, and I am left with this. How would you play it?

(1) My personal choice:

CueTable Help

(2) My opponent's choice:

CueTable Help

(3) A friend's choice:

CueTable Help

(4) Another friend's choice:

CueTable Help

(2) feels a bit dicey to me because it requires too much speed control to leave the cueball where it needs to be and get the right angle on the break ball. (3), a kick shot, seems a bit too close to the pocket's tip for comfort. (4) has a big potential for scratching and requires too much speed control to end up at the right place. As for my own choice (1), it presents the risk of hitting the break ball after the foot rail, but there's less uncertainty with the cueball/breakball angle.

What would you do?

I prefer 2. Less movement. VERY easy. Not a lot can go wrong. A lot can go wrong with the other options.

I would opt for choice #2 as well, its really no risk easier to judge the speed !!!!

all though i am ussually over-zealous and may try #1 with alot of inside juice.....LOL

I actually played #1 earlier, not much english needed, just follow. For some reason I tend to prefer getting position with follows and rails better than direct draws. I feel safer playing them. Maybe it's a carom habit...

#2 all the way, I never like to move the cue ball more than I have to.

Not in this case but... What if you can get good position by not moving much, but great position with a slightly tougher 3 rail shot around the table for instance? How do you decide?

Always the 2nd choice- in every billard-game you should try to keep each shot as simple as possible! the more simple- the less chance to make errors!

I would still opt for the good position without gambling on the three rail position. You are just asking for trouble with excessive cue ball movement in straight pool. Keep it simple.

Gotta go with #2.

As stated earlier, #2 requires the least cue ball movement. And it also allows the greatest margin of error. If you draw too little, you'll still have a shot, albeit not at the angle you may prefer (personally, I prefer a steeper angle to go into the rack harder with high english), and as long as you don't draw too far, you still have a shot. There's about a foot and a half window with this option. It's definitely the highest percentage shot.
