Hustling Stories

I heard a story that one of the worlds top pool players and gambler made a game with a "fat guy" and got beat down so bad that he tried to quit in the middle of the set and call the bet off for a grand. Ended up begging and crying in the hallway for his money back. Claimed he was hustled. :rotflmao:

I think I may have read something about this recently lol.

When you hustle do you go to a pool hall with a good cue or use a shitty house cue and on purpose play like a dipshit lol?

I used to use a half way decent two piece cue. I had an old Palmer I liked. You don't want to look like an idiot, you want to look like a average player who will gamble. If you look like an idiot you can't shift gears when you want to play a better player who are the guys you are going to win something from. It is better to give a little weight to the weaker players then play like an idiot. Just don't really show your best speed. At a point they will want to trap you with their local champ.

Hopefully you can beat him and maybe bust the place. You also "NEVER" let the sucker get ahead, that just happens in the movies. Get him stuck him right out of the box and if he shows any heart he will chase his money. Then you can milk him for what he will go for. If he pulls up right away so what, you were not going to win anything from him anyway.

Haha...sweet!

Thanks for that. Yeah, the amount doesn't mean anything, not sure if it ever does. I got him for $9 and wouldn't have cared if it was only $1. Now some will say bullshit, the amount counts. Well, I remember one day at the Hollywood Billiards sitting there and listening to two guys we called The Weasel and The Boa debate who between them had won more money hustling. The Weasel played for higher stakes and won most of the time, but not always. The Boa played for light cash but squeezed his opponents slowly to death at 50 cents or a dollar a game. So here they were arguing over who between them had won more money over time, and after a while it got pretty repetitive, at which time I interjected, "Hey, you guys, how much money do you have in your pockets right now?" Pretty close to nothing was the obvious answer. "Ok then", I added, "so i guess it really doesn't matter then, does it?"

A good story about losing money is more valuable than the money you lost,

Can't wait, the oldies are always the best! todays crew hasn't a clue!
Hereis another that actually went right.
I was hanginig in a bar in east Denver and it was of questionable reputation whth every type of felon one could imagine handing out there.
I ws in my mid 30's and playing well at the time and this place got action.
A guy started coming in with that oud personality and falshe aa lot of cash.
he liked to play and we played with me giving him the 7 and the break and only for about 20-30 a game.
Eveeryone was telling him I played okay but did not like to bet high.
On Wednesday night we all got pretty drunk and a little wild but that wasnormal.
Wehn I wokd up on Thursday i only knew he wasthere because he had been the part of a big jewl hiest downtown. I had no idrea how I knew but, I just knew. Ihad gotten that drunk.
On friday late afternoon he came in and immediately went to work on me.
We began playing around 6 that evening for $50 a game and by about 9 he asked me to bet $100. I was ahead about 4-5 games and balked.
"no, I don't like to bet that high" I said.
he called me names and insulted until I had to bet $100a game.
At midnight he asked,"Let's bet $200 a game"?
"no, this is getting out of hand and i don't want to" I sid.
The insults and so forth flew out of him until i could stand no more and said,"Bet"!
The bar closed but we and about 10 others stayed and we played all night and allday the following.
About 4 in the afternoon and up about $2000 he said,"Bet $400"?
"Mo, hell no, I am not raising it again" I said.
Agai ntheinsults were even stronger and until I was just sick of hearing it.
Finally he says,"Bet $400 or I am going to take you outside and whip your ass"!
"wo, I doon't want that, so bet" I said.
i won the first game for $400 and said,"Bet $800"?
he sid, " no $00 is goodwith me"!
i rel\plied with, "either bet $800 or I am going to take you outside ad whip your ass"!
He stared me down, smiled, and said,"Bet"!
I then beat him 17 in arow and ended up $19,000 ahead
On monday his picture was in the papers as a partof the heist and we never saw him again.
It was about the only hustle plan that went right for me.

Real nice move at the end. Well played.

I had only been away from my town a few times looking for action when this happened. There was a place in Murray,Ky that supposedly had action,so my friend Jeff asked me to go.

We only had 200 between us as far as gambling money went,so we decided to combine our funds, and whoever got action first used it.

We had asked the woman behind the counter if anyone around played for money, and she said the place would be full of college kids in a little over an hour,so we left to get something to eat.

We came back, and sure enough people were playing on 6 of the 8 tables. We asked around about finding a game, while goofing off playing with each other.

Jeff had gone to the bathroom, and this old guy came up and sat down. I hit maybe 10 balls and sat down to chill for a minute when he got up to walk away.

I asked him if he wanted to play some, and he turned around with the damndest look on his face and said "SON YOU CAN'T FOOL ME,YOU PLAY BETTER THAN I DO BUT YOU WANT TO TRY AND HIDE IT THEN ASK ME TO PLAY BECAUSE YOU ARE TRYING TO WIN MONEY,SO LET'S JUST SAY YOU BEAT ME OUT OF 500 AND GET IT OVER WITH!". I'm still confused as to why this seemingly gentle old man is raising his voice to me as if I disrespected him, when it got worse by him handing me 500 dollars in 20's.

I asked him why he was giving me the money when I had not done anything to deserve it,and told him that I didn't mean to make him mad or cause a problem between us.

He toned down and said that the bartender had called him at home and told him there were a couple young kids in the room looking for action. He wanted to see what we really had,and that he thought I was missing balls on purpose to disguise my speed, which I didn't need to do because he would have played even if I had not missed.

He said he came here to lose 2500,but since I decided to try and play off,it would have made him feel bad because he didn't get beat by a guy that just drilled him,he got beat by a guy that was toying with him. "Here's your 500 son,I'll try ya for real sometime, but you better give me your best game!" About the time he handed me the money,Jeff walked up.

The old guy, who's name I found out later was Norman, walked away without saying anything to Jeff. Jeff was like "damn that was fast, how much did WE win?". I told him what happened after we got back to the car,and that I felt bad about what had just happened. Jeff was the more opportunistic of the two of us,and said that I had no reason to feel bad, that I should take the money and never question where it came from.

I went back there on my own a couple times, and always ran into him,and he always wanted to play. As long as I gave him all I had,he was good for 500 every time, until Jeff went up there looking for him.

Jeff talked him into a game, telling Norman that I told him that Norman was a champion, and he wanted to learn "from a legend". Norman lost 200 to Jeff at 50 a game, when he heard Jeff bragging to a waitress that this was just like stealing. Norman paid off the 200,and walked out without saying a word. The next time I saw him,he told me to thank Jeff for "plugging the hole where the money leaked out of the tree",and said he didn't wish to even speak to me anymore, when none of this was my fault.

The last time I asked about him up in that area, the bartender told me he drank himself to death, which was odd because he had told me once that he hadn't had a beer for 20 years at the time. Tommy D.

Thata was the hardest part to believe , for me anyway. We were paid in full!
ON Tuesday, y partner and I left for Vegas where he blew everyting and I had only taken $2000.
When he learned I had only taken $2000, well, he ws just sickened.
i don't even bring this story up to brag, things like this rarely if ever, happen anymore. That ws the 89's though.

not much hustle to this one, but funny.
years ago, Dany medina, Dave matlock and i got into the car= in Denvr and headed toward Oklahoma.
We wenteast on I-70 to Limon and caught 287 toward Oklahoma and texas.
We were headed toward Springfild Colorado and a amll ranching communtiy and I had heard of a fireman there who liked to play and would bet a ittle.
We got oito town and found the little bar adn a few ere playng 9 ball, chepa 9 ball.
The big winner was a cowboy looking guy, aout 35-40 and wearinf a parka thtat said Sprinfiled Fire dept, so we surely assumed ihe was the guy.
WE all 3 sat at the bar and watched a few minutes and he walked over and sid, flatly" Pool players"?
"We play a little" Danny said.
He pointed and said, I will play you or you , but not you" He said pointing at me. I was obviously the weaker player and by quite a matrgin dn just kept quiet.
Danny go tup first and won $500 adn then Dave did the same adn he paid off with no problems and that was that.
"In no way will I play you" he sid and walked away.
Wejust shrugged and started to walk out and I just couldn't stand it and walked over and asked' YOU play them but not me, why" I asked??
"Kid, don't huistle me, we do't play guys wering tennis shoes"!
We got the car and cracked up. i got some mileage from it adn they gave me crap all the way to OKC.
The first ime we stopped for gas, I changed shoes.

Lol, alrighty then. Apparently tennis shoes are related to great shots around that neck of the woods.

I also feel I needed to add here, the two pool players standing outside when the supposed sucker comes out, and one says I beat him for a ton and the other says I beat him for thousands over the last few years. There was a guy standing by them when the supposed sucker gets in his new 60,000 car and he turns to the other two and ask them what they are driving?

A story from the other side...

...Never saw him again.

and like that...

Thanks. I have to add that I was just as broke as they were, so I'm not laughing at them for being broke, more for the way their empty pockets cried out with tales of yesterday's glory. Thanks again.

Wow, what a character. Some would say the guy is sick, but I'm not sure about that. Sometimes I think being a mark and being able to afford to lose is better than having to work at taking marks down. I love the guy's attitude. He may be sick in some other way that I would not like, but his insanity in regards to your story is the type I admire in people. Yes, you ruined it when you turned the wrong guy loose on him. You fool!
