I am sorry but I am watching the live stream of the ( Worlds 14.1 ) the streaming table pockets could not be bigger . I think at this level the conditions are a JOKE imho

Agreed that the pockets are large

Nearly 5". But the table is playing much tighter. There has been only 1 100 ball run on it this week (mika ran 102 today). And all of the top players have played on it.

Actually John Schmidt ran 100 on the nose earlier today on the tv table. Johnny Archer had some tough draws today.

IMO pocket size is only one factor in whether a table plays too easy or not. For some reason those Olhauson tables spit balls out far more than a GC. In addition, I think their side pockets are cut funny and play tighter than their jaw opening would lead you to believe.

I know they are major sponsors, but I never liked their tables. Whenever I played on them I always felt uncomfortable and unsure of how they would accept or reject shots.

I'd call them a bit too easy, but that's the trend in 2013.

At the China Open, the pockets were not tight. At the BCAPL pro events, the pockets were not tight. In particular at the US Open 8-ball, it made running out just a bit too easy for the game's superstars. TAR matches used to be played on 4 1/8 inch pockets but are now played on 4 1/2 inch pockets.
Still, the China Open produced a final of Wu vs. Vann Corteza. The US Open 8-ball brought us a final of Van Boening vs. Biado. TAR matches are still showing that the cream is rising to the top. I have every confidence that the cream will rise to the top at the Dragon 14.1 event now in progress.

I'm fine with all of it. FYI, Straight pool, as a rule, has never been contested on very tight tables.

Guess I disagree with the original post.

Three matches in a row today (Thursday) --

Schmidt 100
Bustamante 107
Immonen 102

The pocket size doesn't really bother me. I stated in another thread that I don't think super tight pockets are appropriate or necessary for 14.1.

I like to watch these guys pocket balls and how they manuever around the table. Safety matches? Not so much.

I think the larger pockets are part of the solution to make the game more interesting for the "casual" fan.

Therefore I'm for it.

Disagree

I have to disagree with the original poster. In my opinion the pockets are the correct size for the table and they are "normal" pockets. If those pockets were too large, than we would be seeing scores like 100 to 0, 150 to 0. They all would be having high runs. We are seeing good matches with each opponent taking turns at the table. Players that shim their tables are taking away a certain aspect of their game. A well seasoned 14.1 player will use all parts of a pocket to achieve their position by aiming at one third of a pocket etc. etc.(cheating the pocket) & by pocketing balls using the rails to bypass a ball blocking a clear path towards a pocket. If the makers of tables like Brunswick all through out the years, making tables like The Centennial, Anniversary, and Gold Crowns wanted their tables shimmed than those tables would come out of the factory like that but they are not. Shimming pockets is nothing more than altering equipment.

Who didn't get excited watching Daz run 200 and out to beat Busty 200-1?! Awesome!

I can say that Johnny's club - Marietta Billiards - has a bunch of these Olhausens and an equal number of Gold Crowns. They all have 5" pocket openings but the Olhausens absolutely spit balls out (hard down rail) much more so than the GC'S. Perhaps it is a deeper shelf or pocket angle or combo of both.

Thoroughly enjoying watching the free stream of the world's best 14.1 players regardless of pocket size!

imho tight pockets make sense in rotation pool (9 and 10 ball) but straight pool is about patterns, cluster management, shot selection. you can have 7 inch pockets in straight pool and a banger will not run a rack cause he will lock himself up. take those pockets for 9 ball and a 5 year old will run out ;)

tournament was GREAT, enjoyed every minute i could watch. daz made a superb run in the semis, i can remember maybe 2 shots that were close to "hanging".

Thx to all who made this event possible!
