I Believe Introductions Are in Order

Welcome to the Dojo Richard. May your time here enlighten you. As far as being a AZ 7 and running 11 racks, mad props to ya. I'm still an AZ 7 and can barely run around my house lol
hey o2bacs;

Hehe, thanks, but honestly I think it was largely the result of alcohol-induced luck/arrogance. Really I've always felt I was more a student of the game than a real player.

Hi Richard,

Welcome. There is quite a bit of 1 hole and 14.1, with a 14.1 league at Kolbys' Corner Pocket in Tempe.

Just ask for me and I'll be happy to hit a few balls if you are looking to learn either game. (BTW-I would have maybe bet a little until I read about the 11 rack stat!;) )

Thanks.

Bernie.

You'll get many chances to be a good student on AZ. Theory runs in some folks veins and they love to talk it up. You'll like it here and you'll be a welcome assett to the forums.

Do you have a table? What kind? What cue do you play with these days? There's at least one other fella from Phoenix, SJM I think he goes by and I guess he played a lil back in the day :) Ask Jay Helfert. I believe that Rod is also around Phoenix but..... maybe that might be Tuscon. Well... have fun.

See ya, Jim

Hi Lenny;

Nice to (kind of) meet ya. If you wouldn't mind teaching someone how to play straight pool/one pocket I'd like to get together sometime and shoot a few games. My game is 8 ball. I dabble in 9, I've even won a few tourneys somehow, But I've always been interested in straight pool.

By the way, in AZ I'm rated a 7. Rumor has it I'll be moved up to an 8 next meeting. Not sure I like the idea though. Heck, I like having a game or two advantage on 8's and 9s.

My leagues are all finishing up in a couple weeks, so maybe we could hook up sometime after that.

Anyone can fly. It's the landing most people have trouble with. ;-)
I am rated an 8 so perhaps we can have some good games.I am all for meeting up and playing some,could use the practice in both games. :smile:

Thanks Bernie and I will try to get in one of those days for 14.1 training,maybe after you can smash my hand with a break cue or something so I can fix my horrid bridge,haha. :smile:

wow, you ran 11 consecutive racks of 8-ball! That's impressive! There's lots of pro's who have not even done that! Well done, even though it was 15 years ago :D

If we ever meet, please remind me of not playing some 8-ball with you, ok? :)

Enjoy your stay here at AZ. Remember, you can get addicted of this site...

Welcome from one av8r to another! I've always had a special feeling for freight dogs like you!

Hehe, don't get any funny ideas, Jim. I only stroke POOL sticks . . .

Hehehe Jim;

LOL. I just luv giving my fellow yank-and-bankers a little hell.

Right back at ya, sir. All my respect. (cattle herder ;-))

Hey FL;

Yeah, sounds like we might have some good games if I can remember how to play. Didn't you say you're from Tempe? I usually hang around in N. Phoenix, but I could be tempted to swing down there. I gotta find out what my schedule is going to be next week or two. Would anywhere in that timeframe work for you? Let me know.

Welcome

Thanks for the intro, and Welcome!

On a serious note, since you fly freight planes, how can we get the
no-cues-on-board rule changed? Many have cues (much more valuable than my own) which they don't want ground through the baggage system, and/or then stolen. :(

Any suggestions?

And keep the shiny side up....Oooops....forgot...freighters don't HAVE a shiny side!!!

Hey Jay;

Thanks for the welcome and thanks for the info. No, I don't think I've met Jeff, but that's not unusual as he drives the cattle and I just carry the freight. The tourney sounds interesting as well. Schedule permitting I just might show up.

Okay Jim;

Sorry it took me a bit to answer. I saw your post then spaced it (short-term memory is in the weeds from all the Jet-A fumes).

Okay, no, I don't have a table, at least not yet. As a pilot I tend to get moved around as I chase different planes, so until I get where I'm going I'm holding off on the table thing. I know a couple local places that don't charge me and go there.

I recently purchased a Meucci Power Piston Demo 18.5 oz. w/ Blackdot shaft 12.75 mm about 6 weeks ago. I'm trying to make it my primary shooter, and I think I'm close. Previously, I shot a Meucci HP-3 19.25 oz. w/ 12.75 mm blackdot shaft for about six years.

In a very quick comparo I would say that the PPD is consistently easier to shoot cuts and generates more controllable english with less effort. The HP-3 banks more easily and for some reason it is much easier to masse with. This will probably change as I get more comfortable with the new cue (I hope, cuz I like to bend it).

Right now I am breaking with either a house cue or my personally modified Stealth. Don't get excited, all I did was throw away the factory shaft (warped after just a month) and bought a phenolic tipped breaking shaft off Ebay. By the way, it works great. If the J & J breaking stick I just picked up doesn't break any better I'm sending it back and keeping the Stealth. Oh, and I have no idea what model Stealth. It's black/black wrap, 20 oz., breaks down into a jump cue and the end has one of those extension deals.

That reminds me, I wanted to post another question . . . later, fellas.

Red Lite;

Yeah, I get this question from people alot. Look, don't quote me on this; I don't really feel like this post biting me later.

I can't help you at all when it comes to trying to get your cue on a passenger flight. That's not my gig. What I do know about passenger flights is they will probably not allow cues simply because they could be used as a weapon or could hide a serious weapon.

As for possibly sending your cue ahead via ups, dhl, fedex? Hmm.

Okay, here is what I would do. I'd send it via the company that rhymes with bell. The only reason for this is that from what I've seen their ramprats, er, I mean ramp people, are slightly slower than either of the other two companies. They are required to digitally weigh each item immediately before it goes aboard the aircraft. Also **L does not load their freight as high. This means less weight on your stuff.

Finally, if you're going to send it by ANY company, pack it in ALOT of bubble wrap. Accidents happen. And ramp rats can't read. At least they can't read the word "fragile." Basically, if it can be thrown, it probably will be. And not every throw is followed by a catch. Sometimes it's deflected.

Or you could get one of those aluminum pool cue cases I just saw the other day on the web. Don't remember the name of the company. I think zero something. No idea what they cost but was made of aluminum and had a lock on it. Supposedly held 2 or 3 cues and shafts.

Remember, The number of times a package is thrown is reduced by at least two with the company that rhymes with bell because of the weighing thing.

Now if you do send it freight there is much less worry about it being stolen as every item is checked at least four times from the time it gets the airport to the time it leaves. I know this because if one turns up missing for any reason I end up crawling around the plane looking for it.

Anyway, hope that helped a little.

I think that's great information! Nothing like a little perception from the inside providing insight that we'd never otherwise be able to gain. Thanks!
