I second that. Anyone that would include SJM on their ignore list might as well add me too. Whether you agree with them or not is not the point. The point is that they have all added beneficial information more times than not. And ragging on league players while you yourself have accomplished nothing to write about, makes me think that the only thing you bring to the table is being a professional WPBA stalker.

Dave -Trying to make the Gremlin ignore cut-

I certainly agree about SJM. I met him a couple of weeks ago in New York and he lived up to his posts as intelligent and passionate about pool with a ton of knowledge that he is not afraid to share. We spent an evening playing and it was extremely enjoyable.

Just dont expect any productive input from Gremlin, he lacks in any actual knowledge of the game and is nothing more then a lapdog fanboy of the WPBA stars who laugh and joke about him when his back is turned. Gremlin has the belief that if a person is not famous or a pro then they are not worth his time. He is enraptured by celebrity culture and by putting the people he cares so much about on a pedistal they will never see him as a equal and only continue to look down upon him.

Couldn't have said it better Celtic. He tries to make it seem like he is someone important and no doubt thinks he's better than most people who post here. Guys like that are a dime a dozen and really he’s a defenseless little weasel.

He mentioned name caller, WTF that’s all he does unless he’s trying to butter up to a skirt. LOL What a joke, and who cares if their on his ignore list. I’m with you guys, good riddance. Thanks for everyones support.

I don't see Butch Harmon winning any golf tournaments...or even playing in any...Yet he is considered the hands down BEST golf insructor in the world right now....What.... is pool SPECAIL

Although I do not completely agree with what I perceive as Gremlin's position on asking pros only, FIW, Butch Harmon did indeed win a prestigious professional golf tournament, the 1971 B.C. Open.

IMO, the best instructors must be both accomplished communicators and accomplished players. But, there's merit in taking instruction and advice from lesser accomplished intructors.

Fred <~~~ not accomplished

Fred-Butch could play. My brother and he were rivals as juniors around Westchester way back. I use to match up vs his youger brother who was 2 years younger than me14-12 but still beat me more than i beat him.

But the BC Open was an 18 hole event. BC stood for Broome County I believe. It was held around Binghamton NY and had a pretty good pool tournament attached to it. The pool tournament was bigger to the pool world than the golf tournament was to the golf world.

Yes, sjm you sure know what you are talking about. Talking seem to be your biggest asset. I wonder if you ever smell what you shovel. Cheers,"Gremlin" :p

Sorry Gremlin, but I don't engage in flame wars. I will continue to address everybody on this forum, yourself included, in a courteous manner. I'm glad that pool has brought so much enjoyment to your life, and hope it brings you more and more good times. Here's to your good health and good fortune, Gremlin. I respect your right to hate me.

If I was your editor and you came to me with your original post, above, I'd fire you on the spot. Over 30 English errors!...from a journalism student, no less! That's why I laughed. Sorry, no harm intended; the irony of it just made me laugh out loud, so I posted. I'm not trying to embarass you, I promise.

This has been nagging me for some time, and I wonder if you could help me here:
Is there some reason young people use the small cap "i" vs. the proper "I"? Was that part of your schooling, that resulted in your admirable grade point average (way above mine, btw), or did you just pick that up on your own, or...? I'm really curious about this and would like an answer if you have one.

I see the small "i" being misused quite often lately. I sense it as being part of an integrated policy of the schools dismissing the value of the self, but maybe I'm just being paranoid.

Maybe this is good reason to bring thy, thine, and thyself back into usage. They don't require capitals.

Jeff,
I think its not his fault - he bought his keyboard used from the Silencer - no caps are possible.

P.S. - I too am slightly annoyed by poorly written posts, I usually only skim them. There is at least some fairly good evidence that learning to write clearly and correctly improves your ability to think clearly and logically - just food for thought (bad chef pun).

Absolutely right!! This is a particular pet peeve of mine, because of my English degree. Grammar and punctuation do matter! Poorly written posts can be hard to understand (yet one more way that posts are misconstrued and flame wars started.) I can't count how many times I've been told, "It doesn't matter - you know what I mean." But sometimes I don't, and as Williebetmore noted, writing and thinking skills are closely associated. Besides, good command of written language enhances one's esteem among the learned! :)

This reminds me of a funny grammar exercise I learned:

John enjoyed the movie more than she [did]. [John watched the movie]

John enjoyed the movie more than [he did] her. [John watched part of the movie]

LOL!!!!

:( :( I don't think I can ever post again...I didn't realize there were so many hard core grammarians on here. :(

All I want to know is, is it OK to use "ain't". I always thought if you were referring to a "piss ain't" or your "ain't and uncle" that it was proper, especially here in the deep south where you grew up in Alabama, ain't it?

Alas, "ain't" IS now in the dictionary (it wasn't when I was growing up); I shudder to think what else may be included nowadays!! Since dictionaries are just collections of words by usage, if it's used enough, it'll get in there. Therefore all usages of "ain't" are, unfortunately, accepted........EXCEPT your examples, which are misspellings. :D LOL!!! Anyway, although you are correct about where I grew up, my mother's family is from Kansas so my accent is very slight. My mother never made fried okra or anything.....in fact, in Alabama they called me a Yankee! (Besides, I was born in New Jersey.)

I always thought that punctuation and grammar were a key part of our society. I mean... without it, wouldn't we all be doing your job?

They may be misspellings, but they ain't mispronunciations in that context, not here at least. :p Joisey? You were a Yankee!

lol, too.

Another one for this board:

"Speaking of the local pool hall,...

...their their their best and your your best"

...there, they're their best and you're your best."

It does matter and does reflect thinking---hell, language IS thinking and thinking is language. I never really attempted to learn proper English UNTIL I started on my specific path of self-growth, some 25 years ago and soon realized its value. It took awhile to understand why it matters, but now I know. I appreciate any corrections, anytime, especially from someone who has majored in such things.

Here's another one, especially for RickW who, on another thread, expressed a dislike for long-winded posters (unfortunately a group in which I must at least get honorable mention) - "If I'd had more time I would have written you a shorter letter."

Be glad that language evolves or else we would still be grunting at each other and using basic hand gestures, which would be very hard to work into a message board such as this. The language we speak would be almost unrecognizable to people speaking "english" 1000 years ago. This is not a negative, if anything the invention of the printing press and globalisation has caused language to become alot more static and less apt to change. No longer can regionalization cause new languages to form, and new words must not only form over time to become part of a language, they must be accepted into the language bible, aka the dictionary.

Eighty some posts generated by one young person wanting to know more about pool!! I think we have a lot of passionate pool players out there who subconsciously read the language in the post and felt that here was a youngster who needed to pay attention to his schooling since us old timers would have surely failed English class if we wrote like that. And for me - my initially reaction was to join in telling him/her to spend more time with his school work. Pool is a passion /obsession for me and has been since I was 11-12 yrs old probably because I played too many hours and got too good too young. (hooked!!) For me a lot of life decisions have been made based on that passion. Life may have been a lot easier financially if the passion for pool came later in life. And I think that is what was trying to be expressed. Kid, do good in school - you have all the rest of your life to play good pool if you have the passion for it.
