I was playing and older gentleman in his 70's for the hotseat in a local 8 ball tournament tuesday night. He shot really well and i was ahead 2-1 in a race to 3. I broke and ran to my last ball which was tied up to his ball. I thinned my ball out and spun the cueball and stuck him between his ball and the rail. He attempted to play a goofy combination and missed and i ran out. After the match he came up and shook my hand and said "I dont agree with that chickenshit shot you took" To which i replied "Im sorry sir but i have to win anyway that i can" He then jerked his hand back and angrily yelled "youre a chickenshit" and walked away. I couldnt help but laugh about it. Anyone else have similar experiences?
It's pretty common in local bar tournaments, especially in TX......I learned to play that way as as a kid/teenager, nobody played a safety and they were not welcome......especially when gambling......first started playing in small TX bars in my teens......for people who play that way, you won't change their mind.....small bar play has been that way for as long as I can remember. Safely play can get you kicked out of a tournament, a bar, or worse.
Now the good news - sounds like you are a true, strong player....which means in regards to local bar talent, you are as good as the best guy in the room, and likely better......which means it's pretty easy money, whether gambling or playing in the weekly......if you'll play along with their rules, you'd be surprised how much money can be made if you are willing to play their game. Hell, when I was 17, we could go to the bar with $20 in my pocket, gamble $5 or a beer a game, play on an off for 4 hours, hang out with friends, entertain the females, eat dinner, and leave with $60......and pretty damn consistently. Did this for years, and I was nothing special.....just had quit whit and made friends with the biggest guy in the room.
A bit of friendly advice - play their game. You'll make some friends, and while they won't ever appreciate a safety, you'll always be welcome, end up ahead the vast majority of the time, and it will challenge you to play a two way shot instead of a safety......kinda like one pocket, you just play cue ball, go for a hard bank or cut shot, something that will give you the same result. Some of those guys aren't so bad, and if you play their rules, they typically don't mind losing a little consistent cash your way.
Either way, good luck.
