I got called a chickensh!t by an older fellow

Being called "Chickenshit?"
Any time I play defense. It's also called several other things that have derogatory connotations.
I'll just usually thank them for the match, unless they really piss me off, then I ask who their next match is against..... DOOOOUGH! I forgot, you lost.....

LOL, a good way to handle it......

Funny, the only time I've ever had the word chickenshit uttered in my direction was when I three-fouled an old timer at the local Monday 9-ball tournament. Like you, I took it as a compliment.

Next time make it look like an accidental miscue and look angry when you miss and he gets hooked :P

Whether in league, tournament, life or AZ you'll find negative minded people like that sprinkled around. I remember my opponent said I didn't win, he lost. It's true he did scratch on the final game, but I won by 7-3 margin.

Don't deter him from you coming back.

welcome to the world of pool

the worse sports in the world
selfish, nasty mouth, low rent bullies and unemployed losers

i say this after 60 years of playing pool

i get a lot more of this now that i am in my 70s

if my family actually knew the verbal abuse i get every day in the pool room
they would be so disappointed

i never let my kids near the pool room

oh,yes, there are a few really nice guys but they are usually collectors or
business men

honestly wouldn't go in the pool room
if it were not so easy to win their money

but i am beginning to think the verbal abuse makes the whole thing less fun

what they called you is kinda moderate compared to what i hear

i have played an equal amount of pool and golf

there is no comparison to the quality of individuals you meet

welcome to the scum of the world

this doesn't apply to the wonderful friends i made int he cue world

So then play Carom, you will find the community 100 percent different,

All welcoming, all happy to help,
The games are as beautiful to witness and learn as the community of player's is to be around

More technical games keep the riff Raff away as they generally don't have the discipline or patience for the time and effort you need to put into learning

Is there some sort of self-help group for chickenshits like myself? Maybe a group with weekly meetings where we all hold hands and talk about chickenshit things.

After that if I played him again, I'd go full on defensive, playing safety shots as long as possible

I was beating a guy pretty handily one time, and on the last game to win the set... I had a kind of tough shot on the 8. or I could just hit it in the face and stop it, playing safe.
I half assed the safe and Froze to the other ball. 8ball went around the table like 12 ft and I got ball in hand. He said I was a fucing ahole, but he wasn't censored.

I was playing and older gentleman in his 70's for the hotseat in a local 8 ball tournament tuesday night. He shot really well and i was ahead 2-1 in a race to 3. I broke and ran to my last ball which was tied up to his ball. I thinned my ball out and spun the cueball and stuck him between his ball and the rail. He attempted to play a goofy combination and missed and i ran out. After the match he came up and shook my hand and said "I dont agree with that chickenshit shot you took" To which i replied "Im sorry sir but i have to win anyway that i can" He then jerked his hand back and angrily yelled "youre a chickenshit" and walked away. I couldnt help but laugh about it. Anyone else have similar experiences?

It's pretty common in local bar tournaments, especially in TX......I learned to play that way as as a kid/teenager, nobody played a safety and they were not welcome......especially when gambling......first started playing in small TX bars in my teens......for people who play that way, you won't change their mind.....small bar play has been that way for as long as I can remember. Safely play can get you kicked out of a tournament, a bar, or worse.

Now the good news - sounds like you are a true, strong player....which means in regards to local bar talent, you are as good as the best guy in the room, and likely better......which means it's pretty easy money, whether gambling or playing in the weekly......if you'll play along with their rules, you'd be surprised how much money can be made if you are willing to play their game. Hell, when I was 17, we could go to the bar with $20 in my pocket, gamble $5 or a beer a game, play on an off for 4 hours, hang out with friends, entertain the females, eat dinner, and leave with $60......and pretty damn consistently. Did this for years, and I was nothing special.....just had quit whit and made friends with the biggest guy in the room.

A bit of friendly advice - play their game. You'll make some friends, and while they won't ever appreciate a safety, you'll always be welcome, end up ahead the vast majority of the time, and it will challenge you to play a two way shot instead of a safety......kinda like one pocket, you just play cue ball, go for a hard bank or cut shot, something that will give you the same result. Some of those guys aren't so bad, and if you play their rules, they typically don't mind losing a little consistent cash your way.

Either way, good luck.

When he called you chixsh*t, I would say you may call it that sir but your the loser.

It's also a great time to get more of his money and challenge him one on one.

I was playing a guy who I'd never seen in my local bar.

All of a sudden he wanted to play for a drink. I told him no I don't really bet on pool. I've seen too many arguments, amongst ppl who are/were friends over ridiculously small amounts.

He kept badgering me, I asked him bca rules?

He said yes, same way we've been playing. I told him flat out I play differently for money. (I generally am not so concerned about winning if it's not for money and will take low percentage shots).

Ok, let's play...

I played four safes on him the first game, he was about to come unglued. It was funny but I warned him.

Turns out a couple weeks later I see the guy in the bar league night, he filled our open spot on the team lol.

Next time tell him to call you fart-face or ****stick or anything different. Very nicely let on he would sound more intelligent using completely different names each time you beat him!

I've had those experiences and being called much worse! Congrats on the win. There is nothing wrong with playing a safety like that. That's part of pool and Life!

I guess I travel down a different road than most of you guys because I do t see the humor in the op's post.

For clarity in case I am missing something funny o will recap his post and you guys can correct me if I am wrong.

The op is playing in a non handicapped local 8 ball tournament with a whopping 10.0\ entry fee and apparently being the bed player there he wins it.

In one of his matches he plays an old guy in his 70's who the op stated played pretty good. As others have stated this old man has apparently old school pool all of his life...some refer it as bar rules.

With the op on the hill and on his last ball he plays an apparent safe and winds up winning the rack and the match.

The old man comes up and shakes the op's hand and makes a comment that the op played a chickenshit shot in his opinion. The op replys that he was sorry sir but he is going to win any way he can. That comment...win any way I can ...sets the old man off and calls the op a chickenshit.

Where is the humor ? Why the comments about going back and taking all his money ? I dont find this humorous at all ...in fact its kind of sad. The rules of pool has changed over the years and this old man is hanging onto the way it used to be played and you guys want to make fun of him.

I admire the old man myself.

With the way rules have changed over the last 20 years and seem to continue to change yearly I doubt that the game you play today will be the same for you 30-40 year olds she you reach this old mans age. You can change with the times or hang on to the way you play today ....personally I see nothing wrong with either option
