I Have A Hunch I'm Going To Be An "A" Player

After over 50 years playing this game at B to B+ level then coming back after most of my health issues are behind me, I have a hunch I'm going to become an A player in a short time. I'm thinking about 6 months. Why? Because I really struggled this time coming back, so I went back to basics that I really never learned or never listened to anyone.

I bought two books, Robert Byrne's Standard Book of Billiards and The Illustrated Principles of Pool and Billiards by Dr. Dave. I have to say going back and learning the right stance and a few more basics that I should have learned 50 years ago has me playing 80% as good as I did before the health issues. I know now how important it is to have the basics first. After reading the books and watching some free videos I can't see how I ever played like I did without them. I don't believe I need lessons but I would say it would be a good thing for the newer players to get them. I'm sure they would make you a better player, and a better player faster. Johnnyt

That's a great post John. Nice to see the incentive and high motivation you still have after playing all these years. I have no doubt you'll accomplish your goal!

LOL Maybe there's still hope for me! I just turned 59 ....... started playing over 50 years ago! But ... I'm hoping I can just get as high as a "B" player!

Good Luck! The EYES have it!

more power to you man! i hope to get myself to a really strong b in the next year. i hope you smash through b and hit the a level like a frieght train. and if your buying books to get back to basics i like ray martins 99 critical shots - some good stuff in there, also people tell me phil capelle's books are good tools to have. good luck on your pursuit.

I think you just put a bar box in your home?...I am hoping that when my Gold Crown gets installed in a week or so that I will have the chance to really up my game.

Has having your own board made a big difference? I know A should be A, but are you shooting for A in general, or A on a 9 footer or A on a 7 footer?

btw, I sub'd for another guy at 8 ball league a couple of weeks ago and after league we started playing teams 8 ball with alternating shots (scotch or dutch doubles?) and both sides were shooting like A players with alot more BNR's and just getting out in general. It got me thinking that that level of focus on the single shot is something we all have but don't always use. So I will be working a bunch on pacing and focus, or what I used to call "cinch shot play."
