I Hit With Every Q I Make, Do You?

It's probably more habit than necessity, but I still hit a few balls with every Q I make. Granted I make less than 50 a year, but I just wondered if anyone else does this. I hit a few center ball shots, then right & left side of the Qball. Then a few draw shots. I'm looking for ANYTHING that is out of the ordinary. A sound, a hit that I don't expect etc. 99% of the time time I'm completely happy, but, once in a while something shocks me. Recently I had a $300 (entry level Q for me), that had a "click" when side english was applied. I sharpened my tool & refaced the joint area & all was well. I'm probably a little anal, but I've worked really hard, for such a long time, I just want it to be right(not perfect)...JER

Jeez, I hope you aren't charging full retail for a "used" cue :D

That's a great quality control procedure! I wish more cuebuilders made the time to do that!

Cue hits

JER,

I firmly believe that a cue maker should test hit the new cue before it goes out the door. The customer should not be the one that finds out first there is a minor problem.

Keep it up.

Do I hit with every cue I make? From the moment the A-joint glue has cured and a pass made on the handle.

Hit....bounced...banged....and put through through the torture chamber.
I like to be the first to know about my failures before anyone else.
That's not to say one may not slip passed but lets try to keep it minimal.

I don't want to give away a secret or anything, but is it true that you dip your tips in root beer and then press them in a vise before installation?

:D :D :D :D

I always like to be the first to take my cues for a test drive. Helps fit a cue to a player, if they like a firmer or softer hit.

I Hit With Every Q I Make

Absolutely, Heck that's half the fun of making them, and like you said, I want to know if something isn't correct.
Darn, I'm been using the cheap root beer from Wal Mart. Guess I have to stop going the cheap way and go with A+W.

Happy Holidays and now I have to go back and sand more shafts.

That cheap stuff just doesn't have that perfect balance of fizzle. ;)

first to hit

before the final polish, i always hit a few with every cue i make. there are lots of reasons, make sure there's no tic, make sure balance is right, certain feel, etc. but the real reason is, what if i have built the perfect cue that never misses????????

After 20 years, I still fall in love with the art that I make. Often, I am selfish & want to keep them for myself. Thankfully my wife feels they should be shared, with the customer that ordered them. Women are so damn practical! ...JER

I do too, for more or less the same reason.

Absolutely....

Every cue that I make (40-50 per year) gets tested by me. I start with some center ball bank shots to check feedback and feel. I like to see how extreme english transfers to the cue ball as well. Also some control shots; like a long stop shot. I like to be able to put throw on the cueball as well. The best thing about making cues is testing your hard work, and others sharing in your exitement. I can't tell you how many cues I wanted to keep for myself.:) :) :)
