I am not sure if this is just mne or if the man I just spoke to is crazy.
As most of you know I am putting together the Legends and Champions tour with Johnny Archer and Earl Strickland. I was given a pool room name and number that may be interested as they go to that room and said it was nice.
I called and got to speak to the owner and told him that we would be doing a pool school in the afternoon and an exhibition in the evening. He asked "whats in it for me?" then "what do you want from me?" I began to explain, "we will need the use of 4 of your tables at no charge" that is as far as I got, he said "no way, I will lose $$$ in table time if I let Johnny and Earl take then over for a few hours" I asked, "Do you know who they are??" he said yes but he wasn't going to lose that table time.
I mean lets just say that you are a pool room owner and all I am asking is free table time for Johnny and Earl to do a pool school and Exhibition in your room would you think that was a losing deal?? I just don't get it, maybe it's just me.

Sounds like your dealing with what they call a NIT!The guy should be happy to have 2 pros of their stature in his establishment, when people hear they are there they will flock to his place and instead of him having 50 people in his room maybe he will have 150. :)

Lmao

Some people can't see the forest for the trees.;)

Keep going and don't let these "soon to be closed" rooms bother you!

I'd let them have any and every table in my room, because the place will be packed, and if you serve drinks and food you would make a killing.

Sounds like a moron. having those two guys there will only help attract more people. How much could he possibley be losing in table time. Besides he'd more than make up for it in added customers.

Obviously it costs more than table time alone but just the tabletime was too much. He told me that he had Varner there a few years ago and lost $$ on that deal too.

On the other hand, for what people are being charged for this pool school, and I'm sure you're not doing it for free, would it kill you to pay 5 or 6 bucks an hour on 4 tables for 4 hours?

Don't sweat it, Mark. Just move on to the next guy. If he knew what the hell he was doing, he would have invented a way to make up for the lost table time in drink specials, or whatever.

One Hall of Fame member and one definite future Hall of Famer and he's pissing and moaning about losing money on 4 tables???

IMO this is an awesome opportunity to get players into your room. Anyone that doesn't recognize that isn't worth the breath you'd have to use to explain it to them.

The walk-ins, don't forget about those walk-in customers that might come to play. Of course he wouldn't want 20 or more guys (plus the people watching) there for Johnny and Earl. The chance of making walk-in money is way more profitable.:D

Hey Mark,

That is pretty rediculous if you ask me. I think what you are doing is pretty awesome. Keep it up and don't let some goof ball like that get you down.

I went to a decent place like Nine Mile Billiards in Pensacola (where Schmidt plays or used to) and hell the table time aint but $2.80 an hour per person. So unless the guy is charging 20 bucks an hour for tables (which would be a joke to begin with) there is NO WAY he would lose money.

There is no doubt in my mind he is being greedy, but I guarantee you that you could find an owner that would give up everything to get those pros there and the people in.

In any other sport, that guy would have to PAY YOU to have two pros like that grace his establishment.

I read the post above several times, and can see the room owners asking "whats in it for me?" I can also understand him saying "no way".

As it is his Room, and maybe he doesn't need Earl & Johnny there.

Because business is booming with out them.

WOW !!!
I only have 8 tables and would give them 4 to use, and would love to have them in my room.

thats kinda the bottom line and the saddest thing about the whole situation.

I see what you are saying and it is a good point. However, I want us to be in a pool room that really wants us to be there and is excited about the event. I have plenty of options so why would I put us in a negative position ya know?

Perhaps this guy's normal clientele just aren't interested in seeing folks like Johnny and Earl. In this guy's eyes, having them there won't bring in any more business that night than he'd normally get, and to top it off, that's four tables he wouldn't be able to generate income with that night. Chances are he sees it as a loss, not a gain.

So, move on - I'm sure there are other rooms in that area who would welcome your event!

Point

Having them do this in your pool hall would obviously cost more than table time.

What's funny is the guy stopping at table time and declining. LOL.

IMO if you are doing a free pool school, then yes I agree he should let you have tables free of charge, but if you are charging people, then he should definately get something. Why should you make money in his room, and he doesn't.

I know in my local hall, i'd be surprised if 5 people knew who they are:eek: . So I doubt it would gain him any business.

There are a lot of different factors that i'm obviously not aware of, so I could be wrong, but without them it's tough to speculate further.

jmho,
Rodney
