I like Earl, but he'll always be a sore loser. Always has and always will.

I can't believe Strickland scratched on the 10 Ball to lose the match, instead of extending it. But after the match was over 'The Pearl' was signing autographs when a fan/person patted him on the back a couple of times as if to say " It'll be OK Earl" . Earl turns around and snaps " Don't f$$king touch me"! It's Ok to tell the guy to please don't touch me, but don't treat him like he's the scum of the earth. Treating a fellow human being like a dog just because you lost, come on. I like Earl, he was my favorite player growing up, but he seams like he's never gonna change. I've played Earl before and he can and is an arse when things aren't going his way. He's great to talk to away from the table when you're not competing against him. I'm gonna give him the benefit of the doubt and think to myself that he apologized to that gentleman, but you just don't need to act like that in the first place IMO.

Ditto that. I like watching Earl play and he is still capable of being deadly if he doesn't go into break down mode.

I thought he was in give up mode toward the end of the match, but when Mike played safe on the 6 ball (that most thought he should shoot) when he had the big lead at the time Earl ended up winning the game and it give him new life. He'll scratch on that 10 maybe one in a thousand. Sure would've like to have seen hill/hill.

My apology for a pat on the back could include you being shoved to the floor. That's if I'm having a nice day. Keep your hands to yourself.
So you belong to the Earl bashing club. If you don't like Earl, don't watch his matches. To whine about his behavior and say he's never going to change, is to repeat what other idiots have said, back about 20 years ago.

What some may not realize is that pool players are human beings, capable of expressing human emotions. Nobody is perfect.

Timing is everything when it comes to approaching a player who's been in the heat of the battle, before, during, and after.

I am a picture nut, taking photos at every pool event I attend, non-stop, but I had to learn proper etiquette.

One time I wanted to get Santos' picture in New England, and he said no problem, but *after* his match. In other words, no player wants a flash bulb blinding them right before they have to compete. :o

When a player loses a tough match, not all will be jovial and cheerful. Some take it harder than others. So what if Earl was upset.

I guess what I am trying to say is people should have common sense when approaching players. I'm not saying not to approach them. Most times, the players enjoy hanging out with other pool people, but, again, timing is everything. ;)

I have been working with a co-worker with exact same personality as Earl; it seems that these people are just built like this; they are not mean, but have short fuse by nature, and we have to live with it, they cannot do anything about it, its their chemistry. Mike is not far from Earl in that department, i am surprised it was too civil of a match!

Well isn't that pleasant?

Why are you so upset that Mr Strickland is a loser? I mean, you certainly must be deeply personally upset about it to mention physical violence.

The OP says that he actually does like Earl, yet you call him an "Earl hater".

You seem to have a serious issue with people commenting and discussing. You reflect on "idiots" over the course of 20 years.

I don't understand why you posted. Was it to make a physical threat? I would really like to know.

You complain about whining, but it looks like that is exactly what you are doing.

I don't like Earl. I could care less if he is talented. Being skilled in a particular field doesn't give someone a free pass to be a jackass and not get called out on it.

Sure, he can act however he likes...it's a free country.

By the same token, people can choose to bash him until they're blue in the face.

Put me in the Earl bashing club. If it makes me an idiot, I'm okay with that. I'm a polite, well-mannered idiot. Oh, and I'm well groomed, too.

Was this a close personal friend of Earl's or a random chalk-chaser? Because you happen to know who Earl is and adore him does not mean he knows who you are and adores you.

I'll be sure to find that guy's wife and start touching her at random. I'm sure he'll appreciate it.

If you'll reread you'll see where I said that I do like Earl. I'm just like most, I like to watch Earl's matches. His behavior and actions are over the top a lot of the time though. Earl is gonna be Earl.

Although I mostly agree, of all the times I think he is justified to do a snap attack is if someone randomly puts hands on him.

Do you guys really believe a person is justified to throw another person to the ground for a pat on the back in an act of condolence?

It was about 3 or 4 minutes after the match and Earl was signing autographs(to his credit). There were maybe 5 or so people already around the table with him and he was signing something laying on top of the felt at the time. I just caught it on the live stream, because they panned the camera over to show Earl signing autographs.

Check out post #13, it has a few more details about it. I could see where you're coming from if the guy went straight up to Earl just as soon as the match was over.

Absolutely not, but we have one poster in our midst that seems to think that would be appropriate.

My brother is a Vietnam vet, a diehard Marine. He's been thought some traumatic crap in his earlier life, which he never talks about. Since I am his sister, I can say this: He is not wired right since he went to war.

I'm not sure what is going on with Earl, but I have my suspicions. Earl, again, is a human person, one that is capable of likes and dislikes.

Loud noises bother my brother today immensely. Sudden movements also upset him. But I can tell you this. If anybody put their hands on my brother, touched him without him preparing himself for it, no matter where he's at, he is capable of responding in a physical manner. My brother lives alone today, reads the Bible daily, and goes through life just fine. He deals with his personal demons the best he can.

Maybe Earl has a personal demon, which includes being touched out of nowhere. Nobody has a right to get in somebody's space like that. Just because somebody is a fan of a player, that does not give them the right to touch that player.

My late step dad was in Nam and was a Marine. He was one mean dude by the time I met him in 1983. He probably would have floored someone for patting him on the back. I have a little temper myself, but I would choose to handle it a different way if I had a problem with it.

I would definitely say that I am not an Earl hater. As a matter of fact, I don't hate anything or anyone. To me, hate is a very negative and destructive emotion that I just stay away from.

Having said that, I'm also not an Earl fan. I have personally witnessed too many situations similar to this. Actually, I believe that Earl is the one harboring hatred. As you can see, it can really tear someone apart.

To me, the big picture here is how it affects pool. I get the opportunity to know many of the pro players and see them at these events. I always encourage all of them to develop a fan base. Quite simply, we need more people who are interested in pool, and the players, enough to pay their hard earned dollars to come to events like this and watch them play. It's fans like this one who decide to patronize other things when they feel disrespected by the players they look up to.

For the fan that offered Earl a pat on the back for a hard fought battle, I apologize to you for what happened. I know I didn't do it, but I'm sorry that it happened. As part of the pool world, you have my deepest apology. I hope that you continue to be a pool fan.

Nice of Earl to dress up for the match. I love Earl and everything about his game but come on man... Sweat shirt and tired looking sneakers??? :nono:

Maybe his state of dress was a tell on his attitude.
Earl usually dresses nice to play.
In a vid he even comments on "dressing nice" to play.
