I Love Those Wannabe Bar Hustlers

I had to stop in a bar today to talk to a friend about something. While I'm sitting at a table with her I'm watching these two guys betting $10 a game 8-ball on the bar box. I would say one guy was a weak "B" and he was spotting the breaks to a weak "C" player. This "C" guy was in no way a threat to run out very often, but still the "B" guy gave him a jelly-rack each time. My way of thinking is if you give him a jelly-rack so he can't run out, the problem is he makes 1 or 2 balls and gives the table back to you with clusters all over the place so you probably can't run out either. If you have the nuts and the guy can't run out often, give him a good rack to spread the balls open for YOU.

I asked if I could play winner and the "B" guy says, " Ten bucks a game". I say, "Oh I thought you were playing for more than that".
He asks how much I wanted to play for. I said race to 3 for $50. He says you're on. I beat him 3-1, running out twice. He paid me and unscrewed. I love finding wannabe hustlers. Johnnyt

Your stories are always so entertaining. Keep em coming.

so you're saying you aren't a wannabe...you're just a hustler? lol

I used to play at a bar that was near my old house roughly 3 nights a week. It was always the same guys and we all learned the roll of the little 7 footer in no time. We all agreed to never play each other for money and instead just helped instruct each other. Lunch time one day I got a call from the bartender (she was pretty cute....::reminiscing::...oh...sorry...) telling me there was a guy playing for $20 a game. At the time I was an estimator for a nationwide company and with only myself and my son to care for, had plenty of extra $$$ to throw around.

I showed up at the bar and she handed me the sneaky pete they had by the register once he went to the bathroom and I walked to the table, pretending to roll the cue on the table when he came out.

"Oh, is this your table?"
"Yup, $20 a game?"
"Sure."

He broke, as it was his table. I take pride in my racks, every one of them. Some may say I'm TOO anal about how well they are put together, but nobody that breaks it apart ever complains. I had 3 balls left on the table when some poor kid that was probably BARELY old enough to be in the bar came up and said "careful, he just got all my cab money."

I didn't like hearing that this guy slow played this kid out of his (most likely) hard earned money. So I finished him off, played 1 more, won it, took the $40, gave the kid $20, and told the guy to shark somewhere else.

Looking back on it, even considering it was before my back injury and my shot was straighter, I was still pretty fortunate to win those games. But man I hate when Wannabe's give a local bar bad rep.

"Wow". you watched two guys who can't make a ball play and then asked them to play and even wanted to raise the bet. What would you have said if the guy said " No but the bartender will play you some for $500.00". I am serious, would have all of a sudden remembered you had to leave? Or would you have played the bartender?

the wannabes gave my home bar a good rep

Shooter, classy of you to give the kid a walking stick especially when you weren't the one that busted him. I purely liked the wannabes, they gave my local bar a good rep. The road players traveling through a little light on the bankroll knew they could pump up there almost anytime. Of course sometimes it went the other way too though, never a good idea to take anything for granted on the road.

Johnny, you know you are getting lazy! You coulda played him for ten and had him raising the bet in a few games. Bet it was fun anyway.

OK, I'll say it...in all honesty I don't get these stories. Someone sees two guys (that aren't as good of players as you) playing for money, and you feel the need to step up to the table HOPING they will play you (the better player) for money?? Is it just an ego stroke, or do you think you're teaching the guy you beat a lesson, what? I try to play better players than me, and don't see playing as a means to make a point to a "wannabe". I've been to bars where everyone wanted to play for something ($5, $10, $20, or just drinks, whatever), and if I can beat everyone in the place I see no fun in that at all....

The bar closest to my house has two boxes, and hosts leagues multiple nights of the week. I used to go there quite a bit (since it was close), but I don't think I've ever had someone break and run on me while playing there. Since I can do that occasionally playing 8ball on a barbox, I felt kinda stupid playing there, and now drive an extra ten miles to a bar that has 6 Diamond boxes (where I am average, if not a little below).

I'm all for shutting up Mr. Loudmouth every now and then, but I'd rather beat Mr No-Talk better player than pick on weaker ones who "think" they have game....

depends

Rusty,

I wasn't trying to prove anything to the wannabes although I did occasionally get a friend's money back for him or play somebody that was obnoxious about winning. I gambled to make money and the easiest way to do that without pressuring somebody into doing something they didn't really want to do is by laying the bait out for the bar room hustlers.

I also loved to compete and tried to find competition pretty regularly. However, if I am honest probably 90% of the pool I gambled on for ten years was just chopping wood. Heads up in a bar for low to medium stakes. I won 85% of the time and I had to stall some to keep my numbers that low. Again, the goal was money. The only people that really got burned were the hustlers that kept raising the bet on me until they got it where they wanted it and then tried to slam the door. Very very rare for them to be able to, plus by then I was playing on their money anyway.

JohnnyT wasn't real serious when he did a little meddling in the bar. Had he been he would have cleaned the player out of a lot more. There are two sides to the hustle and as a general statement every hustle works because the other person thinks they are taking advantage of you. There aren't any nice guys involved.

....

Excuse me sir, but my ego and wallet disagree with you

I really like the stories of Hu and Johnny, these guys have forgetten more than I will ever learn.

Jason

(I also like to play better players, proven by my 5-1 loss before I left the bar last night....also hoping that you don't take too much money from me playing pool and golf when you come to Dallas)

You walk into a shoe store with $50 and you come out with socks:eek:

i found my own goldmine recently, a super high end night club in dallas where all the cokeheads roam. They have a table in their basement VIP area where there are a lot of cocky young fellers with lots of money to throw around. 20 a game is standard and easily goes up, not a soul who even has a clue of how to play pool.

The guy I beat wasn't helpless. He could run out pretty well. The only reason I went up and challenged him was the way he was struting around. He knew he had the nuts. I wasn't going to play. I don't drink anymore and felt uncomfortable in the bar as it was, but my friend asked me to "drop that guy a peg or two", So I did. Johnnyt
