If I still hustled pool I’d try this hustle that I thought up years ago but never followed through on it. My game plan was to go to the sports bars around stadiums one or two days before a big rivalry. I would buy some stick-on team logos of the visiting team and put one on my cheap cue and case. Because a lot of people gamble with their heart instead of their head when it comes to their home team, I think it could workout nice if you didn’t make yourself hated for anything other than the rival team you were a fan of. There are rivalries in most all sports. I think this can be done in a few states area around ballparks. Just buy a few new logos of the rivalries you plan to play near before hand. Hell, I might even get off my old ass and try it here in Tampa/St Pete. What’s the worst that could happen? I had my dentures broke last time I tried to hustle in a bad-ass bar that in no way should have I even been in…much less hustling these guys. Johnnyt

Never talk smack about a drunk meathead's football team. You'll use that pool cue for more than billiards everytime, if you know what I mean. It ain't worth it Johnny.

I kinda like the idea-Obviously if the guy is 6'5" and shirtless, you wont take that game. Pick your spots right-go for it.

OH and just as important, tell us the broken dentures story or link please

you will probably get beat up before the pool game even starts :grin::thumbup:

Not worth it to try and get some bozo in a sports bar to bet $5.

Usually the highest they want to bet

Not worth it most of the time.

I think this would be GREAT if the super bowl was in your town and the people with more money than common sense were out, then you could make a score, but that's just once a year really..

Well hustling and my way too big of a mouth for a little guy caught up to me today. A friend of mine (not any more) told me about a bar that had plenty of $10, $20, and up action. He said there were only a few, if any in the bar that could beat me on a bar table.

I drive down there, see it’s in a bad area, but go in anyway. It took me all of 20 minutes to hook-up with a guy playing $20 a game 9-ball. An hour or so later I’m up $120 and the guy I’m playing is all kinds of pissed off and big. I break the balls, make the one in the side and have a perfect 2-9 combo in the corner. As soon as the 9-ball dropped (before I even got out of my stance) wham with a fist right in the jaw. I go down on my knees hitting the table with my mouth on the way down. I started to get up, but then realized I was pretty dizzy and he was young and big, and I was little and old, so I stayed down in praying mode.

The bartender came over and told me to get the hell out of the bar; he said they didn’t like hustlers in there. I picked myself up staggered to my car and sat there looking at my gun. After a few minutes I put it away and drove home to listen to a bunch of crap from the wife that was worse than the beating. So now for $120 (never got the other $20 for the last combo, and didn’t ask either) I need a new set of dentures for $1000...at least. Makes sense to me. Sometimes when you win you, you lose. I guess you're lucky it didn't go worse. I don't know what sort of hustling you were doing but whenever I have been in places that are rough I basically tell them straight up they can't beat me. Them, thinking that they are great, always take the challenge and have an amount they don't mind losing. When I show them that they really can't beat me then it's almost always cool because I told them up front. Then it has often happened that they have then steered me to bigger action.

I have never been a lemon player in my life and the few times I tried I couldn't come off the stall when the bet was right. But as SJD rightly point out my stroke is a natural lemon stroke.

Flop, Flop, Hook

I used a move I called the Flop, Flop, Hook.

I used to find the crooked cue in the place if there was one. Id put it in the rack near the table and eventually Pool would come up and here we go to play. Id make sure I volunteered to put a quarter in usually first. I would lay the crooked cue on the table as I jammed the quarter home. As I did this I would make sure to roll the cue with my hand and let the crooked end go flop, flop across the table. This set the hook and if the fish was feeling like the canary was eating the cat and started getting mad. I would go to the restroom and never come back. You stayed too long my friend. Little action from lots of people in lots of places makes up for a bit of dough.

My other one was dress all flashy and take a partner, get a bar table and we would soon have a whole bunch of them trying to take it from us. They couldn't beat us and we kept the table all night and dollars added up. Occasionally you would get some guy wanting to bet it up and when you did, well you had free money to try his hand with. Very seldom did his bluff call ours and he would just get pissed and leave because of all the people around the table.

The bar owners loved us because we kept the crowd going and drinking. It was a regular thing we did in several places when I was way too young to be in a bar in the first place. This went on into adulthood until one day after a 3rd shift I got into a bad game and my partner was on the other side. I lost some money and I was so depressed I found a girl and later ended up marrying her.....you got out cheap with dentures my friend....count yourself lucky...lmao

I have to admit I like the idea of your hustle, just add a stick that looks like a barber pole or has a team logo on it and I think you have a winner, better yet use the cooked cue and flip it up where the curve in it runs straight like I used to do. Gets them every time. lol

Make sure you have a good lawyer and some witnesses that act like they've never seen you before...that can take a video in case someone hits you.

For an assault you could get some good money out of it.

I have to tell you, that could become a very volatile situation. These guys fight for no reason at all as it is.
I was once in a bar and a softball team came in, I assume after their game. They had their uniforms on and were loud and began drinking. In a short time they made their way to the pool table and put up their quarters. In no time everyone had quit challenging and I was stuck playing with one of these guys as his friends heckled me. I kept beating the guy and after a time he was not even trying to win any more. He would miss a ball and rack the balls and pay me. It became evident there was no way I was leaving with any of this money. Having the money taken from me would have been the least of my possible problems.

I really did not want to give up the money and it would have been impossible to even lose it back the way the guy was playing, I went to the phone and called the pool room and asked for a guy who is occasionally mentioned on here. He came to the phone and I told him where I was and what was happening. It was about 15 minutes away and he said he was coming. Sure enough in about 15 minutes he comes walking through the door.

This place had two pool tables and there were a few balls laying on the other table. He picked up a cue and began banging the balls around like real hard. Then he asks me if I am beating these co## suckers. He then just threw more gas on the fire asking them if any of them wanted to bet on the side. These guys who had come in and took over and were abusing pretty much everybody in the place got totally silent.

I mean there is like 15 of them and they don't say another word. It was like my buddy had taken all the oxygen out of the room he exuded such a fear factor. The fact was, their human instinct could tell this guy was no bluff and very dangerous. He then says F these guys they don't have any money, lets go get something to eat and we leave. I counted up my money and I had about $220. I gave him half that he certainly deserved, for all I know he saved my life.

How the hell have I ever lived to be as old as I am. I often think back to those days and I get a chill. Young, stupid and lucky I guess.

Great story Mac, now this i enjoyed.
I knew several guys back home and all they had to do was just ask "Whats the problem ?" to someone who would be acting up and that would be followed by silence, lol.

Well, it sounds like a great idea for a hustle except for one thing - people don't gamble anymore.
