I Miss Two Day Tournaments

Having just come back from the DCC (3rd Round), did not buy back in because I decided to "Cash" by skipping the Buy Back, and buying another hotel night mit food/drink -- the drink being a major expense, lol -- it made me long for the days of a two-day, double elimination event.

I am no Spring Chicken and the DCC is a slog for me with endless hours of waiting around to play another round. The younger guys looked happy as pigs in... well, you know.

That's why I am switching over to the International Open... No One Pocket, so far as I can tell, but there is a 650 and below Amateur 9 ball event, better food, likely better hotel, MUCH better location (St. Augustine, Florida), and plenty of side tournaments. And better time of year that allows one to practice outside the dead of Winter. AND the event actually reports to Fargorate.

DCC simply isn't a very good value for us weekend warriors. The Amateur event at the International Open does actually work more or less the same as DCC, with a rebuy and redraw every round, but it HAS to be better run than DCC, by definition.

I stopped going in 2017, when I was 39.

The mgmt sucks. The tables bounce horribly. There is no food to eat. The venue is depressing. There are too many entrants. The brackets suck even when at the venue as a participant to see when you play.

I couldn’t fade all that anymore.

Picky, picky, picky ...

The main reason the 14.1 is gone is the scheduling. Ask Chris Melling about the scheduling. :devilish:

Players should know their next start time within an hour or two. That's completely impossible for the DCC,

By contrast, the first year Matchroom ran the US Open 9-Ball, the matches all started within 15 minutes of the scheduled time. It was the first time they had ever run a tournament with 256 players.

Maybe Zuglan can take it over since Turninstone looks like it's no more

I have probably played in more DCCs than just about anyone, having just missed a few.

And to a degree I agree. What I find most difficult to adjust to are the tables. I regularly play on blue label Diamonds but I go the the DCC and the newer Diamonds have rails that always confound me: they are fast and do not seem to take much spin. My personal experience this year was that this year, more than others, the pockets on some tables would not take what I would call legit shots -- they'd hit a pocket facing and not drop. I watched SVB practicing banks and he'd hit a narrow bank off the end rail and, repeatedly, it would not drop to the pocket on his left. He'd shoot the same shot to the pocket on his right and it'd go right in. Practicing, it was the same for straight ins. For unknown reasons some pockets you could hit the rail, albeit just slightly, and the ball would drop. To other pockets the ball could go straight to the pocket and not drop. Once again, just my experience and personal opinion.

Still a great event but perhaps time for me to try something else.

There was a Buffet, the last time I visited the DCC, but I thought the food was horrible. I remember a very nice steak house being there though. Probably very pricey.

One of the youtube stream guys said a hotdog was $11... ouch. One of the accustats guys mentioned the pizza place being open for the first time in many years...

When I went in 2013, I don't recall even eating anything there, just pool and more pool. I'm sure we did eat but it wasn't a concern at that age and mentality. I do remember eating at the waffle house close by and when we were leaving Earl was coming in, that was cool meeting him again. Anyway, I plan on going again, I'll just be more prepared this go around.

It really sucks that they do not hold the DCC at one of the convention centers in Louisville. If they held it at the, Kentucky International Convention Center, then there would be tons of food options available, because that is right there in Downtown Louisville. That Casino that it has been held at for the longest time, is out in the middle of nowhere. So, the only options you have for food are whatever the Casino offers. I imagine the awful buffet is still there though.

A good friend just his last week took his HS daughter/wife to a volley ball event in FL.
After words he and a buddy went to the bar and ordered two drinks, one of em a shot on the rocks.
$75
He said no meal at the event area was less than $35 for one person.

That's FL in the winter.... wonder if they charge extra for Snow. :)

Yeah, well. I was looking at some of my events from the period in 2016 when I was playing my very best and won a regional event... And I triple-dipped (beat the young man in the first round, and then double-dipped in the finals) a fellow who now has a 730 Fargorate. I got 5 games off of Chohan in our DCC 9 ball match with fairly minimal practice, and sick as a dog from COVID.. Put a four pack on Joey Gray in the 9 ball one year as well.

I can hold my own from time to time against 700s+, and have beaten multiple over the years. Back when I was in the states and practicing more, I went through the Northeast, and played against Mike Davis, and got a compliment from him on my game..

I am actually interested to see how I might do in that event after a summer of heavy practice. I have a perfect 4 1/8" Diamond these days, so I have no excuse.

Sounds pretty freaking strong for a C Player.

I enjoyed the buffet very much. (if we are talking about the same place??). I think the last time they had it was in 2015 or so. When I went in 2017 I believe it was gone?

They had prime rib that I loaded up on in the back corner. They also had a grill section in the front middle where they'd make you grilled salmon or whatever you wanted, on the spot. I think it was only open Fri thru Sunday. Once that place closed down, it was slim pickings after that.

I miss Sunday early afternoon tournaments that start at 1pm (on time, possibly with some football on while you and other players wait to play) instead of all tournaments starting at 7pm on Friday, which always start late with the first game rack broken some time after 8pm. Who wants to be out until after midnight after a full day of work, especially if you drink some?
