to playing people who bet their own money

I will play either, but can you guess why I prefer
playing people being staked?

Not sure what's in your head, but, that shouldn't matter. If you're thinking about things like this during play, then you are not focusing on your best play.

A little pool humor "I'll play Jesus Christ for a hundred, even he can't win from the chair!" Haha!

seriously
the only way i can understand this post is by looking at your picture in the avatar

it still doesn't make sense, but it explains the reason for the nonsense

If you don't use the 'quote' reply function, we are not sure whom you are talking to, dean.

But to your point: I think you've commented on this before and as I recall, it is coz of the money. It it there and it is available and it is usually not the sum total of the guys wealth and it is likely to be handed over if you win.

Do I win a cue?

First assumption

I am trying to win money

Reason one

Stakehorses usually have more money to lose
and are not afraid to bet

Too many people are so afraid to lose that they never will win anything

There are a lot of other reasons

What assumption can we make about the player ?

Players are trying to win money, backers trying to gamble...not always true, but I guess it is a better bet than the other way around.

Staked players often make bad games. They cant manage their own money so......
Sometimes, the stakehorse can be goaded into playing. If the stakehorse isnt Don Willis, you might be ok.

All of these responses are accurate ,insightful land meaningful
I was thinking of something else ,but my experience is that you guys are right on the money so far

there is a lot of need for thinking when you risk your paycheck

I find most players match up too tight when they bet their own

plus a guy needing a stake horse is usually not that good at his job if he
doesn't have enough money of his own by now

another thing i find is staked players tend to try to please their backer and
end up playing overly cautious

i prefer a cautious player to a fearless guy who fires away

I am always getting handicaps and my biggest fear is guys that run out
I am not talking abouta wild man,i like to lay them too, butthey can be dangerous

Stakehorses tend to "ride" their horse so they dont always have to like the game.

I also see players talk stakehorses into bad games. There are some pretty good examples in Playing Off the Rail.

I haven't played for decent money often, but my longest matches were with players who were staked. If the player lost a set, sometimes the horse would want to double up. It can add up quickly. Probably what Dean is referring to. A staked player isn't usually as quick to quit you.

Funny true story of me staking a good player.
Years back Tracy Joe Salazar asked me to back him for 50 a game playing Blackie David Dowd(sp?) Game was 10 to 4.
Joe said Its gambling but I should win and Blackie can be a very good score. They played for a few hours. Joe ends up 4 games ahead.
I then find out I was staking Joe so Blackie could see if he wanted to stake Joe!;)

Three things I'm sure a person shouldn't want to do:

1. Assume they're the only person in the world with a working brain.

2. Assume the other guy doesn't want to win as much or more than you do.

3. Underestimate an opponent.
