On ESPN Classic, the Earl Strickland vs Takeshi Okumura match was shown from the semi-finals of the 1996 Challenge of Champions.

At one point, Okumura had less than 10 seconds to shoot and he stood up out of his stance to swat a fly away from the object ball he was shooting at. Which leads me to this question for Jay....The televised portion that aired was not clear on how that was handled. Do you stop the clock for that type of occurance or do you just forget the clock all together after that if something like that happens. I did not hear Okumura call for an "extension", and it didn't appear that one was granted. Do you remember that situation Jay?

Also, what do you remember about Okumura? Do you have any special insights or opinions on him or Kunihiko Takahashi? They were Japan's finest for years, I saw them play a lot, but know very little about them personally. Both were slow and deliberate. Any elaberations you care to share?

Imo, that would fall under TD's discretion. He probably thought that the fly was out of the player's control and didn't penalize him or make him use his 'extension.'

I watched it as well. I also saw Gordon & Nancy Hart, and David Thompson in the audience.
 
Interesting question, which leads to another one:

If a player has no more extension left, can he ask the referee to clean the cueball?
 
The player can only ask for a Time Out at this point, if there is one available.
It would be the same if he asked the Ref for a ruling or the bridge. None of these requests would/should keep the clock from running.

One of the reasons that a shot clock is enforced is to ensure the timely process of a match.

Jay is busy for the next few days running the gsbt event. You might want to bump the thread again next week.

was in top form for that match. He played real well, and was Classic Earl from the old days. That 2 ball breakout was a great shot, and he ran the rest of the table.

Agree.

I was thinking how lucky we are to have film of these great champions. I only wish we had film of Luther Lassiter in the 1940's and 1950's, Eddie Taylor in his prime, Ralph Greenleaf...you know the likely characters Scott as well as I do.

Back to Earl....that 2 ball break out was really sharp! But as great as he played, he didn't even win that year! And the PGA says their guys are good!......
