I want to throw up in my mouth

I watched the IPT coverage on OLN network and finally the game of pool gets a good international tournament with REAL prize money and T.V. coverage and what do they do. They interview Mcready after his match and I listened to him make excuses , one of which was he should have had some beers before his match. Once again watched Strictland make an ass out of himself. Seagle commentating on a match he doesn't know which balls the guy is shooting and when Corr beat Archer 8-3 all Seagle could say was how lucky she was in her position, I don't care how lucky you are, when you beat Archer 8-3 you deserve better than that. We will never get the attention of major corporate sponsorship by projecting these images to the public, so lets be more selective on some of the people you interview and focus on the true embassadors of the game who project a better public image.

This is year 2006, get used to it.
Phil Helmuth is the biggest whiner in the poker tour.
Hasn't hurt the "sport" yet.
Keith makes for funny tv.
The days of pool players in tux are gone.
In fact, in the 70's and 80's, it didn't work.

What the pool players want is cash - money like there is in other sports.

The money will come from advertisers on TV.

More money will come from higher ratings.

You get higher ratings and attract the "masses" by giving the average viewer what they want to watch.

"Wrestling" type shows get high ratings. What others TV shows get high ratings? Think about it! (Actually not much thinking going on in these high ratings shows period :D )

So if you want the big bucks, you need something which will keep the "masses" interested in watching. I think they hit the nail on the head.

FYI - *I* personally would like to watch entire matches, but I realize this would be boring to the "masses" and they would turn off the TV with a quickness. So it is not what "I" want to watch, it is what "they" want to watch...

Like any fringe alternative interest sport, the game needs it's icons who fans can relate to. If they started talking like NFL coaches and players "Corr is a threat win any tournament" after Strickland loses, people would simply tune out. But when Chad Johnson or Terrell Owens speak out, everyone listens. To some, even bad publicity is better than no publicity. There are trying to sell a product here.

Correct. As they say in Hollywood... "Just spell the name right!"

(In other words, get your name in the media as much as possible. Does not matter what they say about you. Thus "publicity stunts", etc.)

Yes I agree it is 2006 and there are a lot of personalities out their but lets get someone with a full set of teeth. I agree with the fast pace and showing the last important game, but it is just as affective to show classy players opposed to these losers with poor sportsmanship in order to help jump start the public image. I am fully aware of all these players, I am a pretty good player myself and have played alot of top talent in my 39 years, I met a lot of good people and an equal amount of a-holes.

I think you hit the nail right on the head.

Consider what passes for TV entertainment these days. Controversy, mostly forced, is what sells. Just look at all the "reality" shows out there. These are just created scenarios for people to argue with each other.

I've only watched the first 15 minutes of the first broadcast (on tape), but what I saw, I liked. If I want to see the matches in their entirety, I'll buy the DVD's. For a 1 hour broadcast, I think they went the way the needed to.

Now, we have to see how many non-playing viewers care enough to learn and follow the players and their personalities

I haven't seen the IPT yet but I couldn't disagree more. Pool needs personalities, good and bad. Pool needs the viewer to actually want to see his favorite guy kick some loud-mouth assholes ass!!! If everyone projects the same nice guy professional image than your average viewer wouldn't care who wins and if the average viewer doesn't care who wins they will turn the channel. Some people like Stricklands antics so they will tune in to see him roar. Some people hate Stricklands antics so they will tune in to hopefully witness him getting a pounding. If you want NEW pool fans you need to hook them with storylines, Period! Just like American Chopper. If they just showed them building bikes who would tune in? Bikers and thats it. They hooked the average viewer with storylines and now some of them are riding choppers. Hell I might even get one now.:)

True that.
The girl with big boobs beat the player of the 90's and he had an excuse for losing. :D :p Great tv.
OK, lemme have it, PC nazis. :D

The production was great. It looked like they used hd tape to tape the whole thing. I can't wait for the semis and the finals so I can tape em.

Everyone I knew who saw the show thought McCready was entertaining and had no problem with his saying he should of had a few Bud talls. The guys a legend and would no doubt beat the hell out of you on the table, so why don't you take it easy on him ptrickshot. I guess you didn't see his recent performance at the IPT qualifier where he beat the hell out four good players trying to win another qualifier entry. Mcready: 40 games won; his opponents won around 10 and these are guys with enough game to pony up a grand to take a shot at one IPT event.

I really can't believe people have posted that Pagulayan and McCready are bad for the game on this site lately. They're two of the most entertaining guys out there and almost all the pool players I know like watching them play.

I disagree. The WWF or WWE or whatever it is these days was a huge success because of the characters. They wouldn't have any viewers if all they had were "good guys". The next time the audience sees Archer, some of them are going to remember how he said he took Karen lightly because she was a female. Some are going to hate it, and some are going to love it...but now you have people in the viewing audience choosing their personal favorite. Like it or not...THAT is good for pool!
Let's just hope the audience doesn't start throwing beer cans at Keith the way they to that Austin guy on the wrestling!

I loved him. Did Keith actually mention the name "Bud" or "Budweiser"? 'Cause if he did and I was a rep for the brew, I'd sponsor him right on the spot!

A few years ago, I foolishly asked Keith if he owned any shares in Anheuser-Busch. He looked at me with this strange, quizzicle look on his face then turned and walked away. His honesty with the interviewer obviously caught some off guard. This world (and this forum) would be a much poorer place without him. There are too few like him left in the pool world!

This has nothing to do with the thread but everything to do with the thread title so...

Last night I played a $215 dollar sit and go on Poker Stars. First let me say that I am flat ass broke but I placed 9th in a $30 tourny that payed like $240 so I thought what the hell. I won the sit and go giving me $900:eek: Now I had over $1000 in my account so what do I do. I tell myself that I will no way no how play stupid with this. In fact I will cash out at least half and then use the rest to fund my small $20 tournies...but I would like to check out the 5-10 no limit cash games. I mean after all I just won $900 so whats a few 5-10 blinds mean, right. I'll just get in on hands were no one raises and only play when I have the nuts. Who knows I may get to 2 or even 3 grand:) After all I told myself ONLY if I have the NUTS. 2 hands later I drop $800 on one hand with my trip aces to a guy with a 222 AA full boat. After today its all gone.

Keith was a highlight.

Overall I did not like the show. However, Keith was an entertaining highlight. In what other sport is beer considered a performance enhancing drug. I went to play in a tournament in New Orleans about 2 years ago. The guy I took with me made me stop at a liquor store and buy a pint of Crown. He said he didn't want to play tight. There is a guy in my league who is a 9 speed who claims he has never shot pool sober. Maybe joe average sixpack out there might appreciate this. Maybe KT can start a challenge match where each player has to chug a beer after each rack. As far as throwing up I have actually seen guys throw up dooring league play and keep on playing.

I thought the show was well done considering they condensed so many matched into an hour. However, the disrespect that Sigel and Archer showed the female players was inexcusable. I couldn't believe it actually. I would love to see Fisher or Corr wipe the floor with Sigel.

Isn't Sigel pretty well known for looking down on the woman players? I saw his smug little ass making comments about woman a year or so ago on TV. I'd like to see him get reemed by a girl as well...way to go IPT:D Too bad I don't get OLN though.:(

Yes Sigel has very little respect for women pool players.......Also I think the show needs these characters like Earl and Keith....it will keep peoples attention. You need to bring characters to the game like poker has. People will watch the next one to see how earl or keith reacts next.

Where's the ref this is a dreadful headline, could this be a new fast larry personality like Sybil? Is this why Grady gets PISSRD ?

I don't think he mentioned a brand name. I did notice that they showed him taking a drink during a match and the can/bottle was edited out so you could not see the brand.

We need some colorful characters and conflict. Look what Tonya Harding did for figure skating. She took it from nothing to having the night of her grand opening on her honeymoon all over the internet.
