Ideas to Improve IPT Broadcast Production

Doesn't KT own the golf channel?

Not the one in the US I don't think. I believe he owns the Golf channel in Europe which is effectively a marketing channel.

I may be wrong though, I only skimmed over KT's credentials when it was posted here and everywhere else.

PRETTY BOY FLOYD

NOOOOO! I had to sit through his commentary (with Danny D) of a Derby City Ring game a few years ago and it was terrible.

My father overheard from the next room and said "That guy is a real jerk!" I don't think he has the tact for national acceptance.

Pair him up with Mitch - now that would be awkward (Mr. and Mr. Eva Mataya Laurance).

I believe Cameron is correct. It is my understanding that KT has no affiliation with the GC in the USA but did launch the Golf shopping channel in the UK.

As for commentary, I would like to see two very contrasting styles and personalities in the commentary box. I think having a loud/exciting colorful commentator can make the action appear more exciting than it actually is...Sid Wydell (SP?) comes to mind....dart commentator with a decent stint in pool commentary always makes things interesting (I remember one quote of his....commenting on a match in the Mosconi cup...."he cut that ball thinner than a butterflys eyelash" :)

I addition to a 'Sid like' style, I would like a very different 'Whispering Tedd Lowe' type personality. Tedd was probably the most loved and famous Snooker commentator and unlike Sid who talks 'often'....Ted would just say the right thing at the right time....and often would go many many minutes without saying anything! When Jimmy White ran 140ish in the world championships one year, Ted (or any one else in the commentary booth) did not speak for the entire frame until the final black was made and Ted simply said 'Pure Genius'

IMO, Sometimes it is better and more appropriate to not say much at all (Ted Lowe) and other times, the action or lack thereof could use a Sid Wydell to spice things up.

Andrew Malcher is founder of Golf TV and is chairman and CEO of Trustar Global Media which also operates the Golf channel UK. KT was just a very peripheral player at best and was pushed out in 2003. I don't believe he has any affiliation at all now other then maybe as an advertiser with his shop America company.

There is also a Nevada connection here called TruCom that is the majority owner of TruStar Global Media Limited. You begin to find partners on top of partners and some rather stealth. At a point you can't tell the players without a program.

Could you point ot your source on this. From what I have seen using a basic Google search on "Trustar Global Media" it appears that this company owns the Golf Channel in the UK and that this company is/was a subsidiary of Shop America, which is/was owned by Kevin Trudeau.

I agree that there are layers upon layers of corporations and companies but I doubt that Kevin's claim of "founding" or owning the Golf Channel UK is not true based on the links I find on the web.

Who knows what is really what there? Who really cares? The man has run two events and paid out over a million dollars in prize money so far. I am sure that most of you can remember the scores of promoters who have made promises to have similarly grand tours and tournaments where nothing materialized. Stories abound of promoters who have collected the money and never delivered it.

So, here we are just a few months shy of the first full event with no reason to think that it won't happen. So far, everything that I can see is that Kevin follows through on his ideas, be they "good" or "bad".

How to improve the television broadcasts? Show the entire match.

Audience Gambling & Interviews

It would be nice to show how the audience bets on the matches. To display a wire and show or announce that Archer is 2 to one on the money against Charlie Williams or Archer giving a 1 set match spot for even money.

They tried this years ago with challenge of champions and need less to say the rumors of some hanky panky started to fly. But, would be nice. We could avoid problems if on a match by match line versus odds of 80 to 1 McFly wins it all.

Also, depict crowed response! Interview a couple fans at the betting window and find out who they bet on and why. Also, show the pissed off losers cusin and tearing up their lossing ticket. Vowing never to bet on that lame pool player. Some great qoutes like "I new better then betting on that blind bat" & etc. Hilarious!!!

I would interview backers and find out who they backed and why??? Get some good stories of road trips, conquest and why they went in with the player.

Same could be done with local room owners that sent a local entry and backed a player or gladiator!!!!:o

Pre Match Cue Maintence Coverage

I would follow and film the cue repair man on site and have them explain the equipement the pro uses and the maintence they preform at the event for the players and some of the qwirks they ask for or special requests.

How cool would it be to video Keith McCready getting his tip worked on explaining the nuances of his tips shape, type special glue & etc he ask the guy to make and see the pros coming back for a touch up or rounding the tip more to their liking & etc.

It would be cool!

and a little bit of filler.

I saw him play at the DCC probably the same year and he yapped the whole match. Much of the crowd seemed amused but i was just embarrassed for him. One or two good lines and the rest drivel.

Only problem with doing what everyone suggested is that there would be no time left for the pool match.

I actually think that Mitch Lawrence does an excellent job. But then you have to understand that he is like a conductor for an orchestra.

Keep in mind that he controls the flow of the program. Only 60 minutes in an hour program and 60 seconds in every minute. He has to fill, and control what happens, every second. It is not as easy as everyone seems to think.

I realize I may be alone in this but my absolute favorite pairing for pool commentators is Jim Wych and Steve Davis, after that I always enjoy Jim Wych and Nick Halling. With both of these combinations I find it very enjoyable to listen them because you can tell they are having alot of fun.

The major improvement that could be made is
LIVE POOL
and a how about a few commercials to promote it.

It's nice that they have a TV deal with OLN,
But lets face it this happened 6 month's ago.
I mean its ready for ESPN classic at this point.

Maybe future tournaments can be live in the US.
I do not think Pool can go live on ESPN or FOX.
They would never give it 2 to 3 hours of air-time.
Unless the Superbowl was on.

I got a suggestion from another IPT player who did not want to post, to make sure to advertise in IPT's own commercials for the next tournaments.

Two things: 1. If possible, show the whole match; unedited. Don't chop them up. And 2. Get rid of the pocket cam and all of the other silly gimmicks. Pool is interesting enough. It doesn't need gimmicks to sell. If you have good players playing, pool fans will watch.

You really think so? Then you are not very observant.

Yesterday I was at Capone's watching the finals of the event. They did have a good size crowd watching the action. Scott Smith was the ref and announcer.

But, on the other side of the room the regular customers were there doing their thing and could care less about the "Champions".

A couple customers were going to walk into the playing area and were told that they couldn't because of the championship match in progress. They asked who were these guys? They can't be that good. When told it was Archer and Deuel they had no idea who they were. And could care less. All they wanted was a few house cues from the rack so that they could get back to their own game.

These were not young kids either. They were in their late 40's.

Unfortunately, pool just does not get the press or media coverage it deserves.

This was a benefit for cancer - relay for life. And they generated $24,000 thanks to LTL Corporation. Had the papers, or radio been conacted I am sure they would have been glad to help out and give some coverage.

I have observed this same phenomena over and over. Sometimes they will even be a little excited and they all start watching. 6-7 minutes maximum and they are all at the bar or outta there entirely.

Inevitably you will hear- "Wow the best in the World - How much money do they make?" How much is first place?" After the answer, dead silence followed shortly by an exit from the area.

I wouldn't consider those people pool fans. Real fans of the game would know who those players are and would be excited to see them play. It's sad that the great champions of this sport are virtually unknown by the general public.

Billiards, think things through to the end.

Picture of famous celeb with prize money and tourney.

Reality TV, strategy and character

8 ball can be such a complex game that strategy (and thus character) is probably what would hold a knowledgeable viewer's interest. Even for casual viewers, strategy change esp points in the match where a player is risking all for a shot can be very interesting, esp if before the match you know a player's personality, background etc through the reality TV segment.

I for one would like to see how top players train, what they're really like off the table, and how it correlates to their decisions and character at the table. I can think of at least 5 characters that many would like to follow off the table :)
