All pictures below are of the same piece of wood. Any idea what it is?

Looks like nicaraguan cocobolo to me.

It could be any of a number of woods, but I would guess Granadillo before I guess Coco due to color (or lack of).

The grain and dimples look like Bocote.

Not bocote. It's difficult to be sure but I'd also guess grenadillo.

I'd bet my nickel it's bocote ;) If these were the only pictures, there's not a soul on earth who could convince me otherwise. JMO, it's bocote that was freshly sealed with an oil base sanding sealer & the pics contribute to the orange color because of the light. Again, only my opinion but it's a 110% sure opinion.

I have a bocote piece that looks like that as well.
It's more brown than yellow.
Makes some dust and smell it.
If it smells like mustard...

There you have it!

I think it must be the ever elusive Cocote, or maybe Bacobolo, a close cousin of Cocote. Maybe even the rarest wood on earth Granabacobolo! Lol. Just having some fun, hope you figure it out! :grin-square:

Could be Kingcote as well.

It's not cocobolo.
It's not bacote.

I can't remember the name of the would but I will find out.

It's the same wood used in some of the real old Brunswick 1-piece house cues. I have several of them but forgot the name of the wood. They look like a 2-piece but have about a 6" pin that's glued on both ends.

Make great sneaky petes

I think you are referring to ipe, brazilian walnut. It's rosewood charactered wood, not actually a rosewood but similar. It was used heavily in Brunswick cues, especially lower end house cues. But this stuff isn't it. This stuff is bocote, unquestionably. It's the only wood with the hairline cross grain rays that appear on the spine face. Other woods have similar rays, but each species has a unique pattern. It's like a fingerprint, unmistakable.
