If a pool cue looks fake then it's a well made....

I was showing a non-pool playing friend some pictures of various cues from members on this site and he was confused. Didn't believe they were hand made.

He said the points and inlays were hand drawn onto the wood...lol

This got me thinking that some cues do indeed look fake and look to be hand drawn. Which I proceed to tell him if it looks fake then it's a well built cue.

I saw some marquetry pictures a while back this year. The work was unbelieveable at what they were able to do with a pen knife and some very special tools to dig out the base and keep it all even. Like you say, they do look fake.
I met and saw the prize winner demo his skills on another commissioned piece. All his works displayed were either on loan by the owners, or were completed works yet to be delivered.

...or it's a decal cue. One dead giveaway is that the decal cues will unlikely have a sig or trademark on them. The Ginacue in your picture can be had as a decal cue for under $100...the real mccoy, iirc, is some 80x times that!

You're right but if we were to hold the cue up close, you can clearly see the pieces in the cue.

I thought I bring this up because it's funny how non-pool players, like my buddy, views a nice built cue.

I see him complimenting the builders with his statement.

Perhaps with a jeweler's loupe, but perhaps not with the naked eye. Those decal cues look pretty close to the real thing, if you don't know what you're looking at.

Decal cues don't give off the luster, color and reflection from the fine materials used.

While many will not know what they are looking at, a good indicator is the materials. Decals look the same but each material has a different texture and look and you can see it in the higher end cues.

Ummm...you cannot "feel" texture through the finish of the cue.

For some dyslexic reason, I read that as toupe, and I was thinking that Jay is the only one around here that uses one of those.

I had a guy say that my JD cue was a decal cue one night at the hall. Little did he know.
I guess thats one for Joel.

I have almost been fooled several times, especially by one made in Taiwan that hit extremely well. The guy who sold them had a unfinished one that showed the supposed construction which was impressive. Parts that fitted together were all threaded and obviously a lot of attention was paid to the details. No doubt in my mind that a lot of average guys not too knowledgeable about cues are playing with decal decorated cues that they think have real points. If they are happy I guess I am too. Most of us at one time or another have lived in a bubble about something in life.

I have been fooled by this too! I was trying to help a friend get his first decent cue and he liked this mcdermot so with out really looking at it i said they all have real work done to them alto of people like them get it. A month later he asked me to look ar it and i see the points are fake. I felt so bad for not catching that at the store i have him the difference in cost from one of there plane models it was like 50 dollars.

I find your post very hard to believe.

...that you have friends, that is.

I`m glad you like the picture of my Ginacue with the silver veneers. The cue is valued at over $10K. By the way, it sure doesn`t look fake, and is very, very well made.......thanks.
