If the U.S had an players only Org., what ONE of the games would they play for pool skills and high viewership? Johnnyt

As much as people knock it, I like bonus ball. I think it was well thought out and a good test of many aspects of pool.

I would like to see 15 ball rotation...15 ball is the money ball...call shot. Johnnyt

One-pocket.....one minute shot clock
Straight pool.....one minute shot clock

I really like slop 9 ball. I'm serious. Everyone who transitioned from being a banger to a player (even a D level), they all play 9 ball.

Give one pocket a try with a shot clock. Although straight pool is my favourite game, I'm starting to believe one pocket may be the best pool game for competition.

These would be my first 2 choices, but no-way it would happen. To slow.

Most people want to see offensive shots. If we have to sit through even 5 minutes of "moving" and safeties, viewership will drop like a rock.

I believe 1 pocket is the game of the future for big $$ matches, but the majority of people either hate it, or they've never heard of it.

Bonus Ball? .... Oh Hell No. At least the way it was done in the past.
The game itself could work, but it has to be an individual format.

Snooker has some great safety battles that get rapt attention....just like one-pocket.
...out and out conservative players are not popular at either discipline.
Like one-pocket, snooker gets boring if it's too much 'white flag' or 'grind'....
...at a high level, one-pock, like snooker, has it all.

I agree with you about Bone-ass Ball.....pool, like boxing, is an individual effort, played at its best.....team thinking, at the professional level, is more akin to tag-team wrestling...
.....a diversion.

Did I mention, in my opinion?

The key here is "high viewership". I would think the game should be 9 ball. Most viewers have never heard of one pocket and don't know the rules of 14.1
We live in a fast food society and 9 ball fits the bill. It's a basic game, easy to understand and the games go quick. I would also go back to winner breaks to see some players run 6 packs or better. JMHO

You're asking about two different animals: pool skills and high viewership.

For pool skills, it's either one-pocket or 14.1

For high viewership, either 9-ball or 8-ball.

If the objective of the organization is to make more money, you've got to go with viewership.

I feel that simplifying pool is not good in the long run....a game needs depth to have staying power.....9-ball becomes 'paint by numbers' after a while....even a non-player gets very quickly that you keep shooting the lowest numbered ball.

One-pocket at our room on a big screen....some customers that only come for food and a beer on the weekends.
They started asking me questions.....half an hour later, they started calling some of the shots......they will be watching more.

I hate football, therefore I know hardly anything going on when I do watch it....
...but many people I know discuss football in a very sophisticated manner.....
....if it was simple, football couldn't keep its fans for so long.

So I say for pool to become more popular as a spectator sport....
..stop trying to spoon-feed the public and treating them like they arrived on a short bus.

Most casual fans (and even some fanatical ones) don't understand/know all the rules and nuances of football or basketball. But the basic concepts are easy enough to understand. Plus, most unknowing fans watch football for the hitting and basketball for the speed.

Here's a potential pool spectator game: Each player gets either stripes or solids (8-ball is on the table but it's only there as a blocker). Players rotate shooting (i.e. you get one shot, then your opponent gets one shot). First to pocket his group wins. 10-second shot clock. Easy to understand, moves fast.

I would tend to agree with this. A sport needs to be enjoyed at it's most basic level but also be nuanced enough to maintain attention. People get grabbed by action of MMA knockouts but it's learning the nuances of the ground game and submissions keeps someone like myself coming back.

I tend to find 9 ball mostly shallow compared to one pocket, snooker or straight pool. That and a lot friends of mine outside of pool have commented that they find it silly that you can win on one ball, despite your opponent clearing the rest. These first perceptions are important and there needs to be depth to hold fan interest and keep them coming back.

I do think one pocket would be a risk, but not a huge one because there is no coverage anyways. The only times I find one pocket particularly boring is when the balls are being bunted around down table with no end in sight.

Ultimately, the quickest game to sell would be 8 ball. That's what people play and it's what they know. Very people I encounter know of or play 9 ball. But a deeper game like one pocket could be more lucrative in the long run. We don't really have anything to lose at this point.

This. No early combos. Run all 15 balls, with little scoreboards on the bottom so people know which ball is which.
OR Chinese 8-ball. I know some of you hate big pockets, but pro level 8-ball on 4"+ pockets is.... I can't think of an analogy for how much of a joke that is. But, 8-ball is the most recognized game. Even the drunks at the corner bar can follow along, and maybe... just maybe... we wouldn't have to learn 10 different sets of rules for 10 different bars.

It should be "61"

Not unlike 9ball ( or any rotation variation), there is a long way thru the rack and a short way. There are balls to protect while also playing safe. Every ball sunk forces the opponent to recalculate their path to a possible run out, while evaluating each possible path based on its possible point value and current ball position.

The game is a simple concept, the games are quick, but it has a lot of strategy and suspense as well.

Played on 10ft tables with 4.5" pockets.
Call shot.
A ball shaker dumped into the rack for random pattern every rack.
45 sec shot clock

You asked lol

No easy answer, but as a spectator there are 2 games I enjoy watching more than any other.

The first is, in my opinion, the best tournament of the year the Bigfoot 10 Ball. 10 ball with 9 ball rules on the 10 ft table.

2nd is take what you make 8 ball. There have been several of these that Bigtruck has streamed and they are fun as hell on both the bar box and big table.

As much as I like 1p and 14.1 as a player and hardcore fan I don't think you can sell them beyond that subset of hardcore fans. People's attention spans are short. Frames of snooker don't last overly long and the rules are consistent from year to year from tournament to tournament. Watchability and familiarity are the key.
