If Pool EVER Wants To be called a sport

I like the shot clocks they have in some of the major tournaments like the Mosconi Cup, but what I'd REALLY like to see is either mandatory Magic Racks OR a strictly enforced 15 second time limit on racking. I'd rather watch paint dry than watch Dechane or Hatch rack and re-rack for longer than it takes to RUN the rack. I can't believe any tournament director puts up with this.

I cannot stand the slow play. "Fast and loose" Pick up the pace! Burning day light!!

My biggest gripe in spectating is paying for the live stream, watch this big tournament for a couple of days, and then on Sunday, its 10pm and they are still playing for the hot seat! For those of us that work Monday morning, staying up till 3am to watch the finals is not much of an option. Just kind of a bummer to watch all weekend and have to continually miss the action when it starts getting good!

Maybe I am just getting old and my bedtime keeps getting earlier :)

Isn't this a scheduling problem rather than a player problem?

This is a non issue IMO. Video can be edited to exclude a player standing there staring at the table for any length of time. For some reason people are equating a live stream to what would/could be shown on tv.

For my money, the best pool videos were from the old propoolvideo.com. Edited to show the game, not John Doe standing there scratching his ass for 5 minutes before shooting a routine shot.

An excellent point that I never thought of...
...just like the movies, much of the art is in the editing.

Edited one pocket matches are fun ta watch. Non players figure it out instantly. There's your pocket, and there's the opponents pocket. Non players have no interest in nuances of pool shots, and are unable to understand it's complexity, so this game if edited is very simple and interesting to non players they understand it VERY quickly. :happydance:

We had the Chohan-Orcullo one-hole match on a big screen at our pool hall...
...three guys started watching...they rarely play pool, they come for the food...
...they started asking me questions...they'd never heard of one-pocket...
...within a half hour, they started calling some of the shots....
...they stayed till it ended that night...

One pocket can attract spectators...because, like chess, you can make judgements like
you're actually playing it....and it aint 'paint by numbers'

So would simply flipping coins, then.

If people can figure out the rules and strategies of, for example, baseball, America's game, I don't think knowing 1-P would be a problem.

YOu really had me going there for a minute, bud....until you slipped up with your claim the game ended THAT night.

Nice try........NOT!

I don't know baseball at all, could care less about rules, but I love watching the World Series. I'm there to have fun, and enjoy the competition and the moment.

Sports that draw viewers don't give the offense 2-5 minutes to study and shoot every shot. Pool is too slow and getting slower each year. Who the hell wants to watch a player stare at a shot for 5 minutes? Are the balls going to move on them. It looks like they never saw 75% of the shots before. Johnnyt

Most major tourneys have 30-45s shot clocks.

Also it's a moot point, because television won't even exist as we know it in 10-20 years

errr in my day.... crotchety old men got nothing better to do than gripe. let people take all the (reasonable) time they need. i play a full notch better if I take my time. sorry it's annoying to those watching, but too f'in bad. i never take an unreasonable amount of time to decide on a shot, and I take my time preshot and lining up. it helps old man

Nobody. That's who!

You know after watching Earl rant on video so many times about shot clocks etc I'm starting to actually agree with him. If you can't make the shot in 30 seconds, then IMO you can't make it at all. To me that's like going back to high school (or our countrys equivalent) with your math exam now. It's too late for that now. Make it in 30 seconds or miss it, but don't make us watch you scratch your posterior for 5 minutes looking puzzled. It's God damned 9/10 ball for heavens sake, can't you count!? Being able to shoot in a reasonable time is part of the skill set. Time is important in all professions. If you can't deliver on time, then you lost whatever the endeavour was you were in. Are you going to say that pool is tougher than snooker? Those guys all manage to shoot in Decent time, and when they don't the referee sometimes rules against them. I watched Selby get hit with one of those. Don't bring up Ebdon, please. He's a joke, like all the slow pool players should be.

Lol.....if you watched that match, Tony and Dennis made one-pocket look like fast game.

Crotchety old men should gripe about you stealing their precious time on this earth. I mean, we all hate slow players, but their time is running out before their eyes. What is "reasonable" to you, exactly? To me, anything over 40 seconds is complete overkill. You don't have to be a rocket or a machine gun to shoot in 30 seconds. I'm probably around the 20 second mark for most routine shots. Maybe 40 seconds for really complicated ones and I'm not considered a fast player. That to me should be an "extension". The only person who should be afforded more time, would ironically be a really old person who moves slowly for health reasons. Watching young, fit people taking forever to shoot a 4 foot stop shot is incredibly annoying.

All the sports I'm aware of that people will take the time to watch, are at the Pro level, as they're separated from the amateurs...which is why they're called Pro's. So, when is pool going to be represented by only the best Pro's in the public viewing eyes, and leave the amateurs and wannabes at home....to watch as well?

I agree, but only to a point. Yes, they should have a pro tour where you have to earn your way on it. But I also think they should have all the tournaments where anyone can get in like DCC and what not. Think about how cool it is for all of the true pool fans getting a chance to play and interact with all the pros and their heroes. I believe that is unique to pool and it really is awesome.

As to slow play - I honestly believe most of the time when someone is doing that ( pro or anyone else ) it is being done as a stall move to try to poss off the opponent. I know I can get frustrated when someone is doing it and I know a lot of others do to. I generally see it and know what they're doing so I usually just stay completely cool so it doesn't affect me - but not always lol 😲.

I've always liked the idea of the US Open 9-ball and the DCC....
You never know when a star is gonna get born.

When I was an action guy, if a man was ridiculously slow, we either had to raise the
price....or I cracked my cue...and I tried never to give them an even game.

Knowing that one hole games can take a very long time I pretty never play for less than $100 a game. It does suck playing a slow player, but I always try to ignore it and think of it as " just part of the game " so whatcha gonna do. To that point, me and most of the peop.email I know won't even give a known slow player action , with the exceptions of if it's someone known to regularly go off real good and or if I think I'm stealing or at least a heavy favorite.

As the bet is raised, so is ones patience.

I always classified any game that could cause personal injury or death a sport.

The game obviously has that covered.
