Question………If the Mosconi Cup goes Hill/Hill and we can't put Shane in the last match because he has already played the maximum amount… Who is the player that you send out to close the deal?

IMO, you would want as much experience in that position as you could get. So naturally my pick would be Cory Duel. Although I gotta think Mr. 400 has nerves of steel too.

Ben

Edit: I'll add one thing. It will really depend on the individual play

In football penalty shootouts, the coach usually talks to the players and ask who is most comfortable and most confident to play. In fact many times the best player in team miss the penalty
So it is not necessarily the best player In terms of speed. It is usually the player who can handle the incredible high pressure and is emotionally stable. Even if Shane can play, I would send JS to play- he has something to prove and he is experienced, mentally tough and has never say die attitude.
For Europe the answer is easy - that Apple guy
:)

I really have to go with Deuel here. It does all come down to how the players have played and how they feel individually about the pressure. If SVB is unavailable and Deuel is not playing well then I think it comes down to individual play with JS getting a slight edge if it is a close call.

Nevermind getting hill hill they might not get past 2 wins like last years team

I like young guys in this situation. Young guys led the way in the last Ryder Cup victory. They were too busy winning and having fun to think about the pressure. If I'm Coach, I look Hall and Bergman in the eye and ask who wants to win the Mosconi Cup for the USA. The look I get back decides which one goes out there and gets it done. I really like Hall's game but I am a Bergman fan, I think he's the guy that would have the Eye of the Tiger look and would step up and get it done.

With all that said, you also have to look at who is playing well. Pool is a sport of momentum. Who played their best at the Cup, who played the best in that last match they played in and seems to be on a roll.

Just wait and see. Bergman and Hall have worked hard this year to bring their games up and they've succeeded at that. They earned their places on the team. Those two young men are going to kick ass and take names.

If it goes hill-hill you can bet Shane will be playing! There is no rule that would keep him out.

i remember the look (on tv) in mariano rivera's eye right before he blew the lead in the ninth in arizona during that last world series game. i knew he was gonna blow it. he was afraid.

I'm a little different than a couple of guys on this thread.. Corey would be the last player on our team that I would send out (unless he was really in the zone at this years cup)…

I would lean towards Bergman… i think he really is our second best player on the team. I would also be comfortable with JS……

I think Mr. 400 is going to put on a dazzling performance. I don't expect him to have any pressure problems.

Agreed. Actually, the rules would permit Shane, but if they didn't, Bergman would be my choice.

As you say, though, if one player shows super-strong form in singles at this year's event, he'd have to be seriously considered.

I, too, would shy away from Deuel, who hasn't beat the stars of the game in big spots in a long time.

Bergman is the key.

I really think the rest of the team can feed off JB's play. I think the entire team knows he can play but he hasn't won anything on the level as the other players. If he can play well then this team can pull off an upset and bring the cup back home.

The other thing I believe to be a factor is John Schmidt. John has a fun loving and out going personality MOST of the time. If he can maintain his good sense of humor and just play he will give the entire team a boost and bring the fun back for everyone.

I truly think those 2 players are the keys to victory. Of course, all other players must play their game. Shane increasing his winning % to better than 50% in singles play would be outstanding as well.

Jay and SJM are correct. Last match is captains choice.

Shane should play 3 singles and 3 double matches. Then a fourth single match if it goes hill-hill.

And yes Bergman is the second best player on the team and would be up to the task of playing a hill hill match (if the rules were different and SVB wasn't able to)

Huh??? Justin hasn't won anything on the level as the other players??

Tell me the titles Justin Hall has won that Bergman hasn't.

Seriously people just type things hoping no one really read what they type??

Are you for real?

Are any of the events Justin has won compare to the level of events the other players have won in their career?

I didn't say he wasn't a phenomenal player I just said he hasn't won some of the crowning events like the DCC or Tunica or US Open. Hes won some nice events this year but I wouldn't consider them elite events.

With all respect, Just because someone doesn't have the level of insight you do on all things happening pool doesn't make their opinions any less worthy.

You singled Bergman out. Tell me again how he is less accomplished than Justin Hall. That was my point which you failed to read.

And Bergman WON the one pocket in Tunica. Beating Busty in the finals.

Your opinion is less worthy when you don't post facts and make sh!t up just to type some words.
