If you could only play 2 games....

Well I have been thinking about this and wanted to get some different opinions on the matter.

I play in an APA league and thought if I could spend time actually practicing I will get better obviously. But, what if I break down practice time as one portion and playing games as the other half since I'm limited to how much time I can actually spend with pool in general.

If you could only play 2 games to increase your overall skill level what would they be and why. I believe one would have to be some type of rotation game? The other... who knows? One Pocket? 8-ball? 14:1?

Now I realize they all provide different aspects, but for the sake of debate what would you play and why...:grin-square:

thanks in advance!

Straight Pool, over and above everything else, will improve any game you play. Straight Pool gives you more of an overall practice in one game than any other game you can play by yourself. Some 9 ball players may disagree but I've been around the game a long time and I think they are wrong. You do need to know how to play it properly, though, and I don't mean just the rules. There are books and DVDs that can show you how to play the game right.

10 ball and one hole. I like straight a lot too, but 1 pocket is more "interactive". Straight pool generates a lot of seat time. In one hole, you rarely even sit.

Aloha and Happy Hollidays,

Snooker then one hole. Snooker gives you three things (14.1, rotation, and a straight stroke. I can't explain one hole fasination other than chess like.

Great topic,

Carl

I'd choose 9 or 10 Ball for developing shot making, stroke and kicking; and 14.1 to develop everything, but especially patterns, position play and speed control.

If I could only play two games?

i didnt read past your post
i agree
10 ball is tougher than 9 ball and you have the skills rotation games give you ...ie pattern play ,need for more english to get around the table ,kicking etc
i pocket because you need to know EVERYTHING to play it well
ie ckusters ,banking.kicking,safety play
and you need a brain!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If I can pick only two games, I will pick 14.1 and Bank Pool. One Pocket would be a close 3rd.

10 ball and One Pocket. My two favorite games anyway.

10 ball will make you develop a stroke and help you with shot-making, position play, and cueball control. One Pocket will help you with strategy, banking, and refined cueball control.

The biggest thing to work on to get better is cueball control. Learn how to control the cueball precisely, and life will get much more enjoyable.

Thanks for the replies. After hearing all this seems that 14:1, 10 ball, one pocket would be the way to go. No way I can play snooker don't have any tables in the area that i know of and my table is an 8 foot. Does table size matter?

On a side note... I just won my match tonight had a break n run and another almost break n run (missed the 8) was and still am very excited about that. My first that I can remember.

I'd probably choose 14.1 and 15 ball rotation, both of which are extremely demanding of fine cue ball control

baseball and golf

if it HAS to be pool related, I'd probably pick 1P and call shot 10 ball like many others here....

Cueball Games

Whatever the games.

1.The safety strategy.

2.The potting.

If you are clever enough to mix them both at the right times ,you should win.
