If you drink. you stink!

Can you reach your full potential if you allow yourself to be part of the "bar scene" while playing pool? I don't think so. You have to seperate yourself if you want to play top caliber pool. What do you think?

Personally, it makes me foggy. Some folks play better when their mix is right. To each his/ her own.

Alcohol is a depressant drug. Depressant drugs slow down or sedate brain activity. The brain controls all the bodies functions. If the brain is sedated then the body will not function to it's full potential. DOT standards say that a driver is impared at .04% Blood Alcohol Content (BAC) which is about one beer an hour for a 160 lb male.

I fall victim to the sweat nectar of life that God has provided in the form of beer all too often....

Maybe some people need to be sedated to reach their potential. Like any other drug alcohol does different things for different people. I have played lights out with a couple beers in me and also played horribly with about the same amount. I firmly believe that mood + drugs + ability = performance. If any of those factors is changed then the outcome changes. Of course the all time best high is the one you can't buy and that's deadstroke on the natural.

Those are two seperate issues. I play w/some work buddies once a week. My best game comes out when I isolate myself a bit. Additionally, my best game never comes out if I'm talking in a serious one-on-one match either.

Getting past your attenion-grabbing subject line, as a sober alcoholic I watch the drinkers' games improve slightly up to a few beers, and then decline rapidly as it did with me. Plus, the next day it's great fun to remember the flyer I actually made.

I don't think you can even come close to reaching your full potential as part of the bar scene. However, if you already HAVE reached your full potential either from pre-booze/drug days of youth or drank later on after high achievement, I don't think drinking "for some" (a very small minority) matters much one way or another.

But you don't have to drink...even if you are at a bar.

I love my beer - BUT -

Being "On The Road" for over 20 years - Drinking was a necessary occupational hazard.
There is hardly any way to Hustle Bar Pool without going in and asking for a beer.
I wish I had a Buck right now for every beer that I took just a sip out of and left it there for a half an hour and ordered a new one.
I always admired California Bob (we traveled together for a couple of years) the way he could suck down 15 or 20 beers and still play relatively good. But if someone started running racks and or wanted to go to a Pool Room and play on a 4.5 X 9 - I knew it would be me that had to do the playing.
Finally - I got smart!
The first thing I would do is introduce myself to the Bartender & or Barmaid. I would ask them to make me Orange Juice & Tonic water in a cocktail glass. When I paid for it (back then), it cost either .50 cents or a buck. I would ask for a cocktail stirrer and then give them $3. They would catch on after the second one as to what was going on. Onetime in Cicero, The Bartender started betting pretty well on me. I asked him not to bet more than 50% of was I was betting. He said "No Problem".
Another time a fellow in Greencastle, in wouldn't quit when his buddies said he didn't have a chance in hell to beat me. He told them all that maybe not right now but this guy is on his 11 Screwdriver and it is going to catch up with him pretty soon. It caught up with his bankroll before it ever had any effect on me.
Now I'm at home - AND EVERYONE knows I come to match up. But if there is no action after about 8:30 pm - I start having my 3, 4 or 5 Buds.
AND EVERYONE KNOWS THAT IF SOMEONE I JUST BEAT THE NIGHT BEFORE EVEN, WERE TO ASK ME TO PLAY FOR TWICE AS MUCH AND GIVE ME A SPOT - THERE WOULD BE NO CHANCE OF ME PLAYING.
Beer goes straight to your eyes & your muscles. It is the first thing effected because of the Hops, Barley & Alcohol.

IMO, whether you're part of the bar scene has nothing to do with your ability to reach your full potential. What you do outside the bar scene is what's important, if that's what you're driving at.

Fred <~~~ drinks or doesn't drink

How's life up in the mountains?

I have 1 beer through 6 hours of practice and it does not affect me in any way shape or form other than that I do not drink during a game or practice and that 1 beer I have is just to calm my nerves before I start running the racks. If that makes me a bad person then you all need help.

I am a BEER DRINKER, just one Beer is O.K. Also I like my BEER over a Glass FULL of ICE..... :)

I find drinking not to be much of a problem when it comes to playing. Of course if there were something at stake I might limit myself to just one or two. If you play in a bar with tables or a pool hall with a bar I'm certain the owners would very much like and expect you to spend a little money on a drink or two (for lessons in customer courtesy contact teacherman :D ).

It doesnt really make a difference to me. But i will say that usually i am drinking while playing pool. I never usually drink more than about a six pack, which i can handle. Yes i can feel it, but no I am not drunk. I dunno if it will make a difference if i drink or not, i just don't worry or think about it. I'm not trying to reach the right level or anything, I'm just drinking beers and having fun playing the game i love. In a tournament, sometimes i drink sometimes i don't. It all depends on whether i feel like drinking, not on how its gonna affect my pool game. I honestly believe that i can smoke weed, and drink, and it doesnt really affect my performance. Ive played great drunk, Ive played bad drunk, ive played good sober, ive played bad sober. Just one more thing for you MENTAL about the MENTAL side guys to think about.

See earlier post - But.....................

If I am playing unusually High - I MIGHT slowely sip on a large glass of Chevas & water w/ lots of ice. It just takes the edge off. It may take me 2 or 3 hours for just one.
BUT AGAIN - Remember, Beer goes straight to the eyes.

Personally ...

I hope all my opponents drink while we are playing
because I don't, and hell, I will even buy them a couple
of shots or 5 if they are up in the set .... lol
