If You Think Your Stroke Is Straight....

Try this.

Cue ball on long rail somewhere towards the head pocket. Object ball on the other side of the side pocket, on the long rail.... both frozen.

Shoot the object ball in the foot corner.

It's driving me crazy.

Maybe it has to be aimed into the rail and then thrown into the pocket. I'll try that before I shoot myself.

that shot

That shot:

1 - Won't go on all tables if hit with a straight stoke.

2 - Is possible to make three different ways that I know of, but only one way involves hitting like a straight shot. And even in that case, a "normal" stoke is not used.

So, I would not beat myself up, using that as a method to test for stroke-straightness. :)

Same here, it's a bad method to test the straigtness of your stroke. Just give a little english, and you can hardly miss the pot.

I think alignment is more important on that shot than anything. But even with perfect alignment and a perfect stroke, it won't go on most tables, because the slightest imperfection in the rail, or on the points of the side pocket, will throw the shot off quite a bit.

This shot demonstrates that most shots "hop" a little because of butt elevation. The problem is that the rail overhangs the edge of the cue ball and if the CB hops at all it will rebound off of this overhang away from the rail. The trick is to shoot with a little rail-side english, which squirts the CB away from the rail and then swerves it back to make the OB.

Yup, but it only works when the OB is close to the pocket. Max 1,5-2 diamonds away. After the contact with the OB, the OB will leave the rail. So when it is like 3 diamonds away, you will miss the pot.

Thanks guys. I feel better. Guess I can re-holster the SW (that's not South West :) )

It went better w/a lil rail side english. Actually made one.... and as soon as I did I moved on to the rest of my practice session. But as long as I was 0 for 10, or 20 or ???? I couldn't move on. But I am NOT obsessive/compulsive!! :D Not me!! I'm normal. !!!!

im pritty convinced this shot cant be made straight in on many tables, because if the cb is frozen to the rail, when stroking, the cueball will get cusion induced trow along the way, wich makes the ball squirt on contact

Shoot this with rail side english (3:00/9:00) and about one to two tips of english.

Shoot slow to medium speed. Correct speed is essential with this shot!

The english causes the cue ball to deflect away from the rail a bit, then the slow speed allows "swerve" and the spinning ball to move the ball back over to the rail. So the cue ball actually goes around the side pocket.

Shoot too fast and you will not get the swerve effect. Shoot without english and the cue ball will hit a bump on the rail and be slightly out from the rail when it hits the OB.

why be normal?

Jim,

Why be normal? ;)

OC is one of my better traits! :D :D :D

Shot can be made. I only use a little top maybe a tip, so the ball rolls straight. I had a guy over to my house that said it couldn't be made. I practice straight strokes hitting that shot. I put OB and CB on second diamonds. I make 1 maybe 2 - 10. He didn't come close to making it.

A friend of my, told me, the difficulty of this shot is not the uneven rail, but the placement of your hand. It is almost not possible to get your bridge comfortable at the table.

That same shot is sometimes used a prop bet. It is double tough unless you use a little soft inside english.

too many variables to say

I can make that shot ten times out of ten. The conditions are that I choose the table and the direction that I am shooting and I get all the practice time I want before started the ten shots for the bet.

Which is just my way of saying that equipment, speed, and also the direction you are shooting the ball even on "napless" cloth all come into play. That isn't a hard shot to make as a gaffe with a little practice. It is a bear when it comes up in a game if you haven't got the table speed and rolls down or don't know if, or how far, you have to swing out for that side pocket. As I mentioned, it is far easier one way on the table than the other at the right speed too.

JimS, if you want to try a good practice. Why don't you but the CB and OB like 10mm away from the rail. That's a much better practice.

ouch!

You posted while I was typing. That is indeed a proposition or gaffe bet. When a guy has spent a little time zoning in on the shot it is almost a gimme. Try the same shot or very similar cold without a little practice and it is very tough especially if you haven't tested the table.

A favorite way to get a quick few dollars to start building a stake in a bar in the old days was the spot to spot shot without scratching too. Easy to avoid the scratch on that shot but as soon as you emphasis without scratching you have planted the thought in many people's head. It is a distraction from making the shot and most barroom types will go off far more betting alternate tries on this shot at a dollar a try than will bet the same money on a game. Usually just a quick fifteen balls or so but I have done this for four or five hours a few times.

One shot I practice is putting the CB and OB 6-8 inches apart frozen on a long rail between a side and corner pocket and draw the CB back to the opposite corner pocket with the CB hugging the rail all the way down. It's dead center draw. Another is the well known diagonal corner pocket draw and follow shots.

The diagonal shot is what I do daily, 30 balls minimum, usually more like 90 to 300 balls potted daily. Been doing that for years.

hit it with inside english.. make sure the cueball hugs the rail until it contacts the object ball... I made it quiet few times

To check if the rails are in line do the following.

Take 3 balls freeze them together against the rail at the head string or 2nd diamond. Take the CB and place it near the first diamond along the rail. Shoot it into the first ball and the last ball will travel down the rail past the side pocket into the far corner pocket it the rails are in line. Using 3 balls eliminates any english and guarantees a dead hit on the last ball.
