I'll Say What Many Are Already Thinking - Mosconi Cup, 2014

The debate is centered around length of race. Many think a race to five is too short. Me included.

They're playing for four days straight, several hours a day, there's no need for longer races. 11 races to 5 provides for a more accurate and fair result than a single race to 55. The better team will win more often under these conditions, not less often.

Reality Is Setting In At Mosconi Cup 2014

Team USA is getting beaten convincingly by a *very mediocre playing* Team Europe.

The Euros are making errors by the bushel and leaving the door wide open yet Team USA can't seem to walk on through. Or even get close.

Chemistry & Kumbaya are nice, being competitive, even nicer.

Our best players are not there.

I will root Team USA on, regardless. I really will.

Just slipping into my asbestos jammies. You are welcome to flame away ladies and gents. :grin-devilish:

Go USA!!

How many months ago did you write this ,, it could be worse we could have one of our players best known for his blow ups there making a fool of himself and his country

I'm getting pretty tired of this one.

Every sport is an exhibition for entertainment. There hasn't been a serious competition since the days of gladiators.

The Mosconi cup is just as serious as the super bowl or the world series. More serious to some. That's why they keep score.

Lol
Funny
This is pure foolishness. Races to 5 in 9 ball. I'm capable of winning a match in this format.

You may be able to win a single set but could you put together a team that could win a best of 21 set match?

The short races aren't ideal but the overall length of the match is enough to showcase who the better team is.

Wow, how many threads do we need about this? The format has its flaws, but it does it what it's supposed to do, that is, be dramatic, entertaining and gets people's attention.

Change the rules, change the equipment, make things tougher and the US would have even less of a chance to win, and that doesn't make for good TV, which is what the Mosconi Cup is all about.

The reality is the only people who would watch a long-race 10-ball tournament on 4-inch-pocket 10-foot tables are us.

Simple case of I played bad, you played worse.

Team U.S. looks like a deer in the headlights, it looks like any minute one of them is going to crap in their pants.

Still rooting for them

I have seen players in leagues play as good as the USA team today. It was dreadful to say the least! Perhaps they should make any prospective future team members play some league pool for 6 months before the Mosconi Cup so they have some idea how to perform as a team.

at today's start the score was EUR 6, USA 4

at the end of today's play it was EUR 9, USA 5

in between, the Euros played sloppy but we played much worse.

there were balls flying off the table, safeties missed by diamonds, a shot intended for a corner that started about 4 inches off a long rail ended up hitting the side pocket point, that sort of stuff.

that's about it.

best,
brian kc

Totally have to agree on that!

Last year we have been cheering for USA on the 3rd day, cause what we want to see over here is JUST GOOD POOL. It's been disappointing NOT going into a 4th day… :sorry:

…so we hoped this year would be much closer to have the tension growing up till the last matches. But we're sitting in the clubs with our mouths wide open…

Okay – we are cheering for Europe and liked the 2-game-lead – BUT we want to see good pool from both Teams.
And Europe has indeed made some critical errors, but the US Boys haven't capitalized from these mistakes.
Watching the games in our clubs with many guys we're always talking about the good ones and the bad ones: „Unbelievable shot by Shane (yesterday's 4)“, „Yeah, this one was missable“ or „That's a tough one, can't blame him missing“…
…BUT we also say „Oh no“ (when John Schmidt missed a safety by a mile) or „Europe shouldn't have won this game“ (after USA potting a 9 letting whitey float into the middle pocket!!! :shocked2: „WHAAAAT?“

Bergman should've won against Niels yesterday…
…Corey and John could have done a lot better today!

So I can't say anything against „Kickin' Chicken“ – it's spot on!

Hopefully Shane wins the first one out there tomorrow…
…to get some more matches coming up!

Well, all I can say is that I would never want a give up like you on my team.

The Europeans don't seem to care how long the race is. If it was longer it wouldn't matter anyway..

I think I'm as guilty as anyone of having too high of expectations for any player that I watch on a stream. I think this is partly because I don't spend enough time in pool rooms but instead I watch a lot of pool on the internet. The thing is -- much of what you can see on the internet is the big dogs playing their best. Few of us actually watch pros stumbling their way through the early rounds of a tournament. We only see them after all the bad play has been weeded out.

This has even screwed up my own game because I'm constantly thinking I'm supposed to always be running out because that's all I ever see. It's so unrealistic.

I guess what I'm trying to say is -- lighten up a bit. I've seen some really good play out of some of these guys. Sure, many of them could have played better but in fairness to many of them, the atmosphere makes this like going from playing high school football one week and then playing the Super Bowl the next.

I overheard john schmidt make a comment to corey after john had missed a shot, he said, "I am playing like a rino".......I could not agree with him more. I am only a "b" player but play with an "a" player twice a week. from time to time he gives me hints on playing better....."know where whitey is going after the shot (why so many scatches?)..keep whitey on the friggin table on the break!.(while that happened only once, there is no excuse)....play a safety if not 85% sure of making a shot".(why try banking the full length of the table when a good safety is available?)......from what I have seen in the past 2 days, our team could learn from just those 3 things. I do not know if it because they are a new team or nerves, but they do not look very focused on the task at hand. even bergman missing a shot by "one stroking" the shot, while I always kick myself when I do that and I always miss, I am not a pro or playing on the mosconi team either! to say I am disappointed thus far is an understatement...we were given chances but failed to take advantage...sorry.

Agreed, you might as well flip a coin

So if two guys are racing to 11, and the score is 6-6 (race to 5) then the game suddenly becomes a coin flip? The way I see it, they are just getting into the pressure-packed part of the match right from the get-go, and whoever handles that pressure the best is usually the one who comes out on top.

Besides, if it really were a coin flip, Europe wouldn't be dominating year in and year out.

You got it right!

Thanks for saying it, if everything is going to measured by who the best gambler is, we are going to win that argument either, because it aint the USA players.
